“Wonderful place and good location”
This brownstone is a classic design - long and narrow footprint with a total of 4 floors plus basement. The unit is well kept up even though it has to be decades old. We visited over the Xmas holidays and the radiator/boiler system kept the unit warm on the coldest days. The stairs to each floor are a bit narrower than today's standards but when this unit was constructed, I'm sure that was normal. Lots of varnished wood gave the place a pretty homey feel. We had plenty of space for 5 adults to sleep, relax and hang out. This kitchen is smaller than today's huge rooms we see so keep that in mind. However, it appears the kitchen has been updated with nice appliances so you should be able to cook about anything. We did not use it but the backyard looks like it would be a nice spot to hang out in warmer weather. The closest subway stop is about 1/4 mile away and we used it multiple times per day. There is an excellent, large, modern grocery store about 1/3 a mil away. The unit even has a large roller-style wire basket that you can take when you go grocery shopping; make sure you take it or you will be sorry. The neighborhood looks safe enough; we felt quite at ease walking late at night. It was pretty quiet (compared to Manhattan at least). However, you do get the random trucks and sirens making noise at all hours. Still, it's NYC and should be expected. This place has a lot of charm. It's definitely "old school" but definitely not decrepit. This was a really fun place to stay and the area of town was pretty subdued. Still, we could get into Manhattan in pretty short order. A tenant on the 4th floor greeted us upon our arrival and we kept in contact during our stay. So, if there is an immediate need for assistance, you should have no worries. This is a big plus if you are from out of town.
Response from the owner Thank you Bob for your constructiv feedback. We are so hapy to have been part of your family Christmas/New year celebrations! Ruty
Response from the owner Hi Arnold, Your feedback is so wonderful, that I used Google translate for English readers. I am so happy the tenant prevented that awful taxi driver from cheating you. We have reported him to the Taxi commission. Come again soon and thank you for your kind words!! "We were a total of five people in New York (2 families) and needed a minimum of two baths. The apartment could provide accomodation for another 1-3 people, because there is a futon & an air mattress. A short e-mail via to Ruty (the owner) and things began to roll. She told me the payment procedure and also ALL other info that I wanted to know in great detail and was very friendly. The apartment is near a metro station (5-7 minutes walk) which one ride directly without changing trains to Manhattan. The location is very good. Quiet (for NY standards), safe (we never felt uncomfortable) and has everything you could need. Small shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance (The HotHouse / Peaches = mmmmmhh delicious!) In the apartment everything is OK - the staircase creaks a bit but that's in my eyes rather the charm and authenticity of the apartment than as a disadvantage. it is clean very cozy. Rooms (all) come with air conditioning which we needed in September (some 32 ° C and above). The couple on 3rd floor managed to help us before we met them properly. A taxi driver wanted to cheat us and drove from JFK to Brooklyn via Queens - and wanted to charge approx $ 75 instead of $ 35. The tenant was furious with the driver and made sure we paid the correct fee. The couple have their own private bathroom and kitchen - so we only met them in the stairwell. But they have been the contact person for us on site and gave us great tips and hints for NYC! This is so to say a "win-win" situation. On our departure Dia ordered us a "special taxi" ordered exactly at a fixed price and arrived exactly on time ... CONCLUSION: If we travel to NYC again, I will ask at Ruty again, because here simply the price, performance, and everything that fits the trimmings. Thanks again for everything!"
We were fortunate enough to get to stay in this lovely home for our visit. It is spacious, has modern amenities yet all the old world charm of yesteryear in it's architectural craftsmanship and detail. Ruty and her staff were great to work with and very gracious. It is within easy walking distance of the subway yet near neighborhood eateries, etc., just a terrific place to call home for your visit. Highly recommended.
Response from the owner Thank you Felicia, We loved having you stay with us while you celebrated your son's wedding. Congratulations!! Ruty
“An excellent apartment, spacious, clean, convenient and well equipped.”
We had a wonderful holiday staying in Ruty's apartment. It was spotless, well equipped and convenient. Making the arrangements was effortless and professionally handled. We were a party of five family members meeting in New York from Australia and England to spend Easter with our youngest daughter who lives in the Upper East side. It was so enjoyable she spent several nights with us! The apartment is well furnished and the kitchen very well equipped, even down to the spices. On several evenings we chose to eat at home and found cooking easy with an excellent supermarket within a convenient walk in Fulton St between Throop and Nostrand and many convenience stores/off-licence within close proximity. The only thing missing for Australians is a BBQ in the back garden! Getting around and into Manhattan was easy with the C line conveniently located at Kingston/Throop Avs and the faster A line express only a short walk further on. Busses will get you to the trendy Williamsburg area but this can take some time! If you have a car as we did for the first few days, parking is achievable in the street and it is safe. We all felt safe and welcome in the neighbourhood. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of staying in Brooklyn. It is an area that is rapidly changing and wonderful to experience. The apartment is ideal for families and very much a home. Dia and Sully who live in the apartment upstairs are delightful and really helpful should you need advice. We look forward to staying here again and would not hesitate to recommend the apartment to any family or group looking for an out-of-Manhattan experience as part of their New York holiday.
Response from the owner Thank you Peter for your very kind words. We are delighted your family had such a great reunion and of course we look forward to your next visit:) Ruty
Four adults stayed here and we found it suited us. The kitchen is great. There are lots of stairs and they are noisy, but this is an old home and must be expected. The rooms are very large, we did not use the lounge area at all, except for the computer. There is so much space. The position was handy to subway and shops. The area looks a bit dodgy, but we had no problem at all, locals friendly and we came home on subway around 10pm at night with no problem as there are still some many people around. We would be happy to stay again, Ruty was great to deal with and prompt. We only saw the above tenants once, when they came to introduce themselves. The only thing I would say that this is a very old home, comfortable , but not renovated to a grand scale - perhaps shabby chic in australian terms. The bathroom upstairs could do with some work. But saying that, the water was hot, beds are great, place was very clean and you are out every day so all you needed was here. Great value for money.
Response from the owner We're very glad you enjoyed your stay:) Thanks for the honest feedback! Happy New Year Ruty
“very comfortable and convenient”
This was our first trip to New York City with teenagers. We live in a suburb in Columbus, Ohio and wanted to stay in a neighborhood, close to the city that would be different from where we live. This was the perfect choice! Close to the subway, safe, and staying with locals rather than surrounded by tourists. The house is so spacious and comfortable. Everything we needed. Loved it!
Response from the owner Hi Kelly, I'm really glad you had the opportunity to show your teenagers the exciting diversity of our neighborhood. It's so great that you chose our home to share a happy thanksgiving reunion. We look forward to your return in the summer:) Thanks for everything Ruty
“Great for a family gathering”
This house was a very good choice for the five of us. Ruty was easy to do business with and the caretakers on the top floor are very pleasant and helpful. The neighborhood felt very safe and was pretty quiet for the city. The house is a short walk from the C line subway which is very convenient to Manhattan. The kitchen had very nice appliances and there were plenty dishes. The cookware was a bit old and beat up but serviceable. I would recommend this house to any group as long as at least some can deal with two flights of stairs.
Response from the owner Hi Lee Thanks for your kind words. We appreciate you letting guests know that the neighborhood is safe:) Come again! Ruty
“Fantastic apartment in a great location”
Rented apartment for 2 weeks. Visiting from Uk with my partner, 19 year pls daughter and family friend. We loved the apartment, it is clean spacious and well equipped. The rooms were huge and very tastefully decorated. The 2 live in tenants Sully and Dia were very friendly and welcoming. It was comforting to known they were there to help and advise. We felt very safe on the apartment and looked forward to returning to it after our days sightseeing and shopping. We loved the area it is in. Very friendly and full of life. Ruty was very helpful with our bookie and always responded promptly to all emails. I plan to return to NYC next fall and will be looking to rent the apartment again. Thanks Ruty, Sully and Dia for all your help. You made is feel so welcome - much better than staying in a hotel. 10 minute walk to train and 15 minutes to downtown Manhattan. Mel, Darren and Evie
“Comfortable, Clean, Cozy”
Our party of 5 headed to NYC with two goals in mind: baseball (Citi Field and Yankee Stadium) and general exploration of NYC attractions. This Brownstone in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn met our goal of an accommodation that was reasonably priced and also spacious and with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. We knew going in that getting around meant a 4-block walk to the subway station. Making arrangements with the owner, Ruty, was easy and effortless. Emails were always answered promptly. The contract was straightforward and understandable. All correspondence was professional and friendly. Also, the tenants on the 4th floor (Dia and Sully) were exceptionally helpful, although we seldom saw them. The Brownstone itself is updated, roomy, clean and comfortable. The kitchen is small but very well appointed and stocked with the basics. The large living area, on the second floor, has a flatscreen TV with hundreds of channels, including movie channels. The computer and printer in an adjacent room on this floor worked well and there is wireless internet throughout the apt. We really enjoyed the restaurants that are "fairly" close (3-4 blocks) to the apt. In addition to Peaches and Peaches Hothouse - both of which are simply outstanding - we were surprised to find a few other restaurants that weren't mentioned in other reviews - on Lewis Street. Know that the immediate neighborhood does not have typical tourist amenities - shopping, bars, restaurants, cabs, etc. Access to Manhattan and upscale Brooklyn neighborhoods is by subway, which is always a walk. The negatives - the fairly remote location and the steepness of the stairs in the apartment. This apt. is not for folks that don't like stairs! But then, no Brownstone would be. One bedroom and bathroom are on the bottom floor, however. For our group, the positives far outweighed those negatives. Our stay was great! Highly recommend for fit/adventure travelers.
Response from the owner Hello Wayne Thank you for your honest and very fair feedback. It was a pleasure working with you too:) Come again Ruty
