“Not Satisfied - Pictures don't speak perfectly”
There were 3 very distinct things that made our stay not so comforting. 1) downstairs area/room had 2 full size(queen size) beds and living area.. good space, but horrible smell. Not sure what it was but smelt like old tires or car parts and very hard to enjoy that area. Hated that we had to make 4 people sleep in that space. It was referred to as the "Dungeon". 2) ROACHES... we noticed more then just one or two instances with roaches in the bottom level and second level. I know they come with houses, but not when you are noticing more and more. Made the night time walking around questionable unless you had a light or shoes on! 3) Back sliding door on second level. It was broken, not handle on outside. Very hard to open and close and all the women struggled with it the whole time. There was a note on the fridge about it being in the works for getting changed out, but I feel that this should have been told to us before we booked it. It did mention asking to move to available condos if not happy, but after you lug in 10 peoples luggage and all the other essentials.. the last thing you want to do is change and reload to go to different place and then had to do it all over again since 3 flights of stairs. Overall the view was nice. You could tell the interior was probably recently redone (not counting what I mentioned earlier). The exterior was in rough condition (the porches and light fixtures). Not sure I will stay in this condo again. May try out a different one, but will be very leery to do so unless we can be guaranteed these things are fixed. The beach was very close and nice to be just a few steps away since children with us. The pool area was nice as well.
Loved the access to the pool and beach . Loved the down stairs the solitude peace and quiet. Relaxation , peace, and quiet all you need to escape .
The slidingglass door to the deck didn't work. We had to use the front door and go around to the deck. The condo was dirty. Food, cup and a shoe found under the sofa. The toilet was clogged, but management came quickly to fix it. Best part was the extra space where they converted the garage to a room with two beds.
“Beach House Vacation”
The patio door was not working properly, had a hard time getting in and out. The downstairs bedroom had dirt under the air unit, and the air unit did not cool the room very good. And there was no toaster. Other than that we had a great time.
“Not so sweet retreat August 11th-16th”
This was our 6th annual trip to Port A with our family. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a bag full of trash on the front porch in front of the door and a broken screen (I assume from the back sliding door) on the back porch. After carrying the broken screen out of sight and the trash to the dumpster, we started to unpack and get ready to enjoy our vacation. The pros of Sweet Retreat are the A/C on the second and third floor worked great, close to the beach, and the pool was great. The cons of Sweet Retreat by far exceed the pros. The first floor had an intolerable odor that we were told was creosote that is used on the posts on the house. The small ac unit for the first floor was new, however didn't help much. The maintenance man gave us air fresheners which did not help. The glass sliding door on the main floor to access the main patio was HORRIBLE and non-functional. We had read this as well in previous reviews but felt like the management would have replaced it by now. To open it and close it took excessive force. It did not have a handle on the outside. Therefore, you could go outside but couldn't come back in or close it from the outside. We let the management know and they said they would send someone out and never did. The door needs to be replaced period. The pool was right outside the door from us, but since the sliding door was non-functional and the excessive stickers in the grass, you have to walk down to the front door and walk in the driveways around the other houses to get to it without crying kiddos from stickers even with our shoes on. Same for the beach access. Oh and the combo lock on the front door is not user friendly. There is a special trick to it that we finally figured out on our own with no help from the management. We will never ever stay at the Sweet Retreat again and I would not recommend it to any of my friends.
“Great location, but house needs some work.”
We enjoyed our time in Port A. House was close to the beach, but it definitely needs some work. Patio door leaks water during rain, door very difficult to open and close, heating element out in dryer. Room on the bottom floor has an odor. With a little maintenance, we'd come back again next year because of location to the beach.
“Family Beach Trip 2013”
The only negative I have is the downstairs bedroom's air conditioner did not work and needed replacing. This caused 4 of our party to be out of sleeping quarters but we managed under the circumstances. The employees at the property management company were so polite and helpful. Although it took longer to get the unit replaced, we did not let it define our stay. Things happen and we were compensated for the inconvenience. The house was adorable and we would stay there again for sure.
“Great place and location.”
Our family of 10 had a wonderful time at the Sweet Retreat. We all had plenty of room to sleep and spread out. The house was very clean and furnished well with comfy couches and a large dining table. As with other reviewers the back sliding door was a huge complaint. As this door faces the ocean and pool, it was our primary door, and it constantly was stuck. Also the stickers! There are loads of stickers in the grass leading to the pool and ocean, which ended up stuck in towels and shoes, lots of crying babies :( The front door has a combination lock and we were never told how to properly work it, this caused lots of frustration as well. Overall I would say we were very pleased with the house and community, although because of the stickers in the grass and that broken back door we will likely not rent this house again.
“sweet retreat #11”
When we got there there was no trash can in the kitchen and down stairs the portable ac unit was not even hooked up, thank goodness my husband does ac work! He had to clean the unit and install it to the outside filter unit in the wall(I took pictures of him doing this), if we had left it like it was when we came in it would have just put hot air back into the room with cool air and really done nothing, but it still didnt cool very well, we also had problems with (i call them water bugs others may call them over sized roaches) down stairs, there was no extra trash bags nor toilet paper or paper towels also the kitchen floor was awful (looked like it had not been mopped at all),the staff was all really nice especially Kim, but I can not say the same for Pat, all he cares about is paying his owners.
“Expected a little more...”
We had a nice family getaway at this location. The beds are small and trash cans need to be brought in. When you have a a kitchen and refrigerator and invite a large family to stay in a location with several rooms, garbage should be expected. Also, the neighbors seemed annoyed having "outsiders" around...apparently, the surroudning condos are owned by retirees, who were unwelcoming, if not just simply rude. The bottom room was hot as there was no additional A/C unit. And, none of the television remotes worked and were not replaced, even after we had called for help. The pool was accommodating and the proximity to the beach was great. The proximity to Corpus and Port Aranasas was nice and it helped to have a convenience store nearby. During a vaction, one does not want to worry about the details and the details here were the problems. However, I would recommend a stay at the location as we still had a pleasant getaway.
