Description

Detailed description

" Tuscany in the Chilterns " 200 year old country barn with Secret Garden, two fields from the Thames, beautiful views, one of a few areas in the UK where you have hills and valleys and a navigable river wrapping around them, encircled by picturesque riverside towns

The old barn is set in the centre of an AONB conservation area, two fields away from where the river thames wraps around the chilterns, a unique area of the chilterns that has the benefit of the hills and valleys as well as the thames wrapping around it, and encircled by the riverside towns of Wallingford, dorchester-on-thames, Henley-on-thames, goring & Streatley, pangbourne, whitchurch-on-thames and sonning-on- thames , great for a romantic break from a stressed busy life or big city, a cultural break or a relaxed walking , golfing , painting, horse riding or cycling holiday , there is of couse boating and fishing on the river Thames, if you want to stop off the world for a while, friends call it the sanctuary ! also useful if in the area for meetings or conferences and need somewhere to stay, fully fitted kitchen so self catering if you prefer and totally self contained, but house keeping services if needed

Groceries - I,m very interested in organic farming and local produce, all the farm land around the barn has gone organic, and conscious of the journey you might have made to get here, i always leave in the barn, fresh loose tea (there's a nice china tea pot) and fresh organic bread, for tea and toast for your arrival, there's also fresh organic butter, organic honey and malt whisky marmalade, organic milk, organic eggs and organic biscuits , so you can just stop and relax and recenter yourself

Accommodation - comprises the whole upper main vaulted and beamed floor of the barn which feels very light and airy, with fresh cut flowers in the sitting room area and amazing views across open chiltern countryside has a continental style with french greys and creams, open vaulted limed oak and elm beams give a cheerful calm relaxed feel, and makes a self contained private apartment, with its own entrance, comprising of two bedrooms , two en suite bathrooms also with baths and power showers, a central sitting room area and kitchen,

Beds & Bedding - its one of the most important aspects of your stay, so with sensitive consideration, the beds are new King size large 5ft wide handmade, hand tufted, Organic lambswool and organic cotton quality 3000 individual pocket sprung divan double beds, being totally natural they support you really well and allow air to circulate, to give a better night sleep. the crisp white bed linen, sheets, duvets and pillow cases are 100% percale cotton linen, which allow air to circulate and you feel more comfortable as natural, and there is a 4.5 tog duvet and 9.5 tog duvet set for each bed, which along with the three pillows per side are all goose and down feather for more comfort and they also allow air to circulate for a deeper natural sleep. All the fresh white towels along with four extra large toweling spa robes are natural 100% cotton as well,

The accommodation works really well for a couple who want to spread out across two bedrooms, and benefit from separate bathrooms, or two friends on a walking holiday needing separate bedrooms-en-suite, or a couple and one or two children if the children don't mind sharing a large double bed or two separate couples, any other guest combination please message me first before booking so we can make sure we can accommodate your needs, thanks

“The old barn”

Reviewed 21 Oct 2019

What a lovely old barn. We were two couples staying for a weekend with two large dogs. We moved the chairs and ottoman around to accommodate two large dog beds and there was adequate room for all. The barn is well equipped and comfortable (the beds were so comfy). We were welcomed with a cream tea and quality tea and coffee. Alexander’s knowledge of the local area was great and he was very helpful showing us routes for good dog walks. The local pub (King Henry), is 1.6 miles away; the food was great and they were happy to accommodate dogs. Overall, a lovely stay. I would recommend a trip into Marlow and to the Chiltern Winery & Vineyard. We did a wine tour, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Their tour also covered Ales and Liqueurs.

“Delightful stay at The Old Barn”

Reviewed 22 Aug 2017

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Old Barn. It is absolutely charming and has been beautifully converted and decorated, with lots of quirky features. We had a lovely cream tea on arrival. Everything you might need for your stay has been provided - hair driers etc. We didn't get to use the garden, unfortunately, as the weather wasn't brilliant. Alexander gave us lots of information about places to visit, walks etc. We had a lovely meal at the King William pub which, as Alexander mentioned, has the most amazing view. Would love to stay again.

Response from the owner Dear Tricia, thank-you for your review, if you stay again I don't know if you realised, there was a private garden with the barn with a large sofa dining area, really comfortable, and millions of fairy lights, very romantic at night, we had a Dutch couple who needed there own outside space, I'm going to add a barbeque as well, as its a private area, and photos to the site, but that is a great area also for all fresco dining and chilling out. and as you say there is the breakfast table and four chairs in the barn itself, I am trying to continuously improve the barn experience, and the private garden is a new feature, please come again, kind regards alexander :-)

Response from the owner Dear Harald, thank-you for staying, I think the blinds in the bedrooms are normal blinds not blackout, I'm going to see if I can add a second blind to the windows so guests can choose, everyone is so different, as for instance I sleep in the main farm house and have millions of fairy lights on all night against all the brick walls, as I cant cope with the dark, also I just wonder if you pulled up the blinds in the main area which incidentally are black out blinds, because they looked like they weren't touched, as you would have had lovely far reaching views across the fields, also I wish I could have shown you around the area so you could see where everything is, its so beautiful, but the weather was crazy, like being on a north sea oil rig, so your trip was limited in scope but I'm glad you had a great walk and maybe found the local pub, I,m getting my boat fixed and will let you know so you can come out on it, it really opens up the area from a different dimension kind regards alexander
