Podere Le Monache set on a hillside dominates one of the most picturesque and spectacular landscapes in Tuscany. With distant views over hills, out to sea towards Livorno and Pisa. Originally a convent wrapped in history Le Monache has a magical and spiritual atmosphere. Whether you are lazing by the pool or strolling in the olive grove or simply relaxing in your apartment you are in another world. Restored and converted from a farmhouse into four charming ground floor apartments. Perfect for small or large family vacation rental.
Great care has been taken to restore all of the original features, including vaulted ceilings, an open fireplace, and beamed ceilings. Meanwhile, all the modern conveniences have been incorporated.
Each apartment is self-contained; and each has its own entrance with terra-cotta patio and outdoor furniture and garden
smoke detectors and Carbon Monoxide detectors.
Laundry room with washing machine for use of the guests.

Each unit has an information folder with details of the house, the immediate area and major cultural events, where to eat and important places to see.
The property has a laundry room , drying facilities, central heating in each of the apartments and air conditioning , the house dates back to the 11th C. and the walls are over a meter thick, keeping the house at a comfortable temperature. We are 300 meters above sea level and in open countryside; in the summer heat we have the sea breeze in the afternoon and evening.
The house is suitable for families as we are situated in a small hamlet with all amenities walking distance.
On request we can provide maid service on a daily basis or as required. We can organise a private chef for romantic dinners by the swimming pool or on the patio for 2, or for large groups
There is a village shop, restaurant, post box, and small Church.
Two of the units are wheelchair accessible, please contact owner for more detailed information.
Outside
The swimming pool 6m x 15m is surrounded by a terracotta patio, with lounge chairs, tables and large parasols. The gazebo has a table and 6 chairs. There are 2 large barbecues on wheels, a wood burning oven for pizza or grilling.
The gardens are surrounded by hedges of laurel, bay leaf and oleanders; one area of the garden has rosemary hedges, shrubs of myrtle and pomegranates, fig trees, mulberry, and plums. The middle garden is formal rose garden with box hedges and terracotta pots. The car park is inside the gates of the property shaded by secular oak trees, and young lime trees.
Beyond the gardens there is 4.5 hectars of olive grove and woodland . We produce some of the best Organic Extra-Virgin Olive Oil in our area. Some of our guests join us during the harvest from picking the olives to taking them to the Olive-press and bringing the oil home! (Producers of Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Certified ICEA and TOSCANO,IGP).

“This was a grower!”
I wasn’t certain that we had booked the right place when we first arrived. The property is oddly named as a farmhouse but is actually the basement and ground floor of a converted convent with the upper floors of the convent occupied by local Italian families. They however kept their shutters firmly closed all day to keep the heat out and as a consequence you are never even aware of them. The apartment (number four) was very clean and well presented. It was a little light on cooking kit (no serving bowls for example) and one or two of the five beds were not very comfortable. Elisabetta and Massimo could not have been more helpful or friendly if they had tried. They have a little shop near the reception area stocked with emergency essentials and there was also a large supply of great quality free vegetables including potatoes, garlic, Onions and fantastic tomatoes. The nearest shop is a 15 minute drive away in Montaione Coop (poor) or Castelfiotentino Lidl etc (Much better) so the Little honesty shop is a good option if you just need a couple of things. The pool is a nice size, chlorine, about 2/5 To a half is shallow-ish for children. Each apartment has an allotted good quality umbrella and sun loungers and seating. Whilst the view from summer parts of the garden across the valley is very beautiful, there is no actual view from the pool area due to the hedges which are presumably there to stop the wind. That said, I was quite surprised by the largish electric pylons striding down the hill! If you look closely in the photos, you can see the power lines. Oddly, you stop noticing them very quickly! We met lovely family is from Poland and Germany and hope to keep up with them! The children all played together really happily and communicated in English. All in all, we had a very relaxing time and were sad to leave.

“Very good appartment, with great views”
We stayed in Podere Le Monache 4 for one week in August. It was more then we expected from the pictures and the description. The appartment was very clean and spacious, with two large bedrooms and enough furniture for our clothes. Also the two bathrooms (one ensuite) where large. Le Monache 4 has a patio, but better (!) it has an large garden, in front and next to the house, with natural shade (and wind, which was very welcome in the middle of August) and great views over Tuscany. Also the large pool was very welcome after a trip, we had in the afternoon long stays there in the beach chairs. Another thing we didn't expected, that there are two resturants in the hamlet Iona. To visit them it was just a walk through the garden, open the gate and at the opposite of the street was one restaurant (and mini market open all day in August) and to the right was Antico Borgo. We visited twice Antico Borgo, which is an traditional Italian restuarant, reasonable priced and very good food. That we had a very pleasant week came also while Liliane, the owner of the property, makes you feel very welcome. We like to thank Liliana for that and also for the best olive oil we ever tasted! We will be back.
