Casa Madera (wood house) is a second floor, fully furnished, two bedroom apartment. There is a 2 night minimum. It features a living room with a 50-inch HDTV (and DirectTV), a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area, and two bedrooms with queen-size beds and pillow top mattresses. The apartment has a cozy log cabin feel to it, and each room has a ceiling fan—not that you'll need them with the great ocean breeze coming your way at all times of day. You can watch the surf and the sunset from the master bedroom or your private balcony.

The apartment is housed within Pasatiempo del Sur, a gated half-acre villa featuring a 12x24 foot pool, an outdoor BBQ pit, and a palapa with hammocks and a dining area. There is also a communal laundry room and covered parking, and we are just across the street from the beach. Here you will have a perfect home base for your vacation. You can take it easy with walks on the beach, read in a hammock, have a fresh seafood lunch on the beach, and toast the sunset from your patio or balcony. Or, if you like a more action-packed adventure, you can swim, snorkel, body surf, boogie board, or surf—Puerto Cayo is renown for its surfing.

Los Frailes, arguably the most beautiful beach in Ecuador, is located in Machalilla National Park, just 20 minutes south. Five minutes south of Los Frailes is Aqua Blanca, a site featuring precolumbian ruins, a hot springs lake, hiking trails, and horseback riding. Ten minutes further south lies Puerto Lopez, a small fishing village from which there are daily tours to Isla de la Plata—the "Poor Man's Galapagos"—and if you happen to be here between July and September, there are also whale watching tours to view the humpbacks.

We live on the property, so we are available for all your needs. We created a coastal oasis in Puerto Cayo, Manabi. Bamboo fencing hedged with hibiscus creates a colorful and private sanctuary for our guests. The three buildings of the compound are situated to maximize views to the sea and to the lush gardens of the property. Palms provide dappled shade for the pool and fresh coconut water for smoothies. The tufted grass of the lawn is surrounded by mature plantings including bougainvillea in pinks and reds, a variety of cacti and aloe, and lilies in yellows and oranges. The air is filled with the sound of the sea and birdsong. Hammocks sway under the thatched-roof gazebo, a perfect place for napping, reading, or doing nothing at all.
