“Beautiful but Problematic”

Reviewed 16 Jul 2015

Upon arriving at Lake Majesty Cabin rental it lived up to expectations of the prior reviews of being beautiful and very clean. The home is beautifully furnished and the cleaning staff does a great job. We are very picky when it comes to clean homes and this one stood the test. A visitor had mentioned there is a steep incline to the pond. Unfortunately it was too steep for me to try it but my daughter and grandchildren were able to make it down there and back on several occasions. It was disappointing to find the paddleboat was full of muddy water and very dirty. They had to tip the boat on it’s side to get the water out and then my daughter carried a bucket of hot water and Clorox spray down to the pond to clean the boat. She also fixed the canopy on the paddleboat which was missing a clip to keep it open. My grandson fished every day. He caught one small sun fish one day but enjoyed the experience of trying. The home would have received a five star rating from us had we not encountered one VERY big problem that was not properly handled. We arrived on Sunday. Monday we went to Blue Ridge to do some sightseeing. When we returned we noticed the home was very warm. We checked the thermostat which was set on 74 but read that it was 78 in the home. I called the owners immediately and one of them came out within the hour. He said the AC that controls the main floor and loft was froze up. He thought maybe we were running it too low (not true – we live in Florida and there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to run an AC in the summer between 72 and 74) and that we’d have to wait till at least 9 PM before we attempted to start it up again. He left saying if it still doesn’t work in the AM he’d get someone out to the house. The main floor and loft quickly warmed up. By night fall it was 85 degrees. This put us in a difficult situation considering the grandkids – ages 13 and 10 were all set-up in the loft where the temps were climbing, I was unpacked and sleeping in the main floor and my daughter in the basement. We all had to move to the basement that evening as even if the AC started up it would take hours to cool off – especially in that loft which never seemed to cool to the same temp as the main level. We had to bring our food, pots and pans to the downstairs kitchen to cook in prepare dinner. Unfortunately there was no where to sit down and eat. There is a game table which we had started a puzzle on in the basement but it only has two chairs (not the four that are shown in the photo) . We had to carry down two of the dining room chairs from upstairs. We tried the AC at 9:30 PM and it didn’t kick on so we turned it off and decided we’d give it till morning to try again. We brought sheets down from the loft and made up beds for the kids by bringing down the couch cushions from the sofa upstairs and joining them. I had to sleep in the bedroom with my daughter. In the AM the kids complained they didn’t get a good nights rest on the make shift beds. We tried the AC and it wasn’t working. We called the owner and they said they’d try to get an AC person out right away. They did pretty good – getting one out that AM. We shifted our morning plans to another day. I didn’t want to leave my 14 year old dachshund when there was someone in the house. The AC repair person found the filters to be very dirty and also said he’d have to order a new motor and that would take a day or two. This meant at least one or maybe two more nights without AC. We were not happy and emailed the owner requesting an adjustment to our rent. They basically said things happen and we had a fully functioning AC in the basement. They reminded me they didn’t have to do anything but they’d refund 10% which was only $133. This really hit a sore spot. The kids weren’t sleeping well and we were all having to make do in the basement. Although the basement is nice we certainly didn’t drive 9.5 hours for the one and only vacation we have planned this year, and spend that much money to live in one bedroom. If we wanted that we would have saved a lot of money and just rented a one bedroom home. Where is customer satisfaction? IF the owner would have been a bit more apologetic and accommodating – perhaps said, “Can we bring over some air mattresses for the kids?” “Don’t worry about moving furniture / pots/pans, etc that you had to move downstairs back up – we’ll help with that…..” Instead we got that things happen – not their fault and therefore they’d do little to nothing. They should have refunded at least ½ a day’s rental for each day we were without AC on the main / loft floors – which means they should have refunded at least $292.50 (for three days without AC). The AC was fixed on Wednesday evening and we were able to move back upstairs on Thursday. (The temp had reached 87 degrees). We did our best to keep the kids focused on happy things we were doing but it was disappointing to be moving back and forth with their things and sheets, pillows, etc.
