Description
For walkers and country-lovers this beautiful stone-built character cottage in the heart of a traditional Greek village will take you back to “Greece as it used to be”. No nightlife – just the song of nightingales. to lull you to sleep. In the morning, take your coffee on the huge balcony over-looking the sea and watch dolphins playing in the bay. No traffic – just mules clip-clopping down the cobbled paths which lead through the olive groves to the beach (20 mins walk) or up the mountain past gurgling streams which flow even in summer, to mountain villages and alpine meadows.
Oliver's cottage is set in a working olive grove at the foot of Mount Pelion, in the village of Ano Gatzea, the only station stop on the Pelion Heritage Mountain railway. The little train slowly winds its way up the mountain, stopping occasionally for goats and tortoises which wander onto the line. Running at weekends in spring and autumn and every day during the summer.
“Out of season” this part of Greece is a walkers paradise – you can walk all day without ever meeting a car through historic villages and dense forest – home to the centaurs of mythology. In the winter, there is skiing at the summit of the mountain, while the sheltered waters of the Gulf remain warm enough for swimming, giving rise to the boast locally that you can “ski in the morning, swim in the afternoon”. It is usually warm enough to eat lunch outdoors all through the winter and a wood-burning stove in the living room will keep your toasty warm in the evenings.
Oliver's cottage is open plan on 2 floors - the upper floor has one double and 2 single beds, ensuite bathroom and large balcony. The lower floor has kitchen, dining area, ensuite bathroom. It also has a seating area, which can be converted to a sleeping area with 2 singles or one double. When used as a bedroom this has a screen to separate it from the main living area.
We also offer sailing trips on a classic wooden sailing yacht around the beautiful coasts and islands of the Pagasitic Gulf (under the same management)
Parents please note - while children are welcome at Oliver's cottage, in common with many Greek villages, Ano Gatzea has high walls and unfenced drops where your children can fall and hurt themselves. You know your own children: if they are likely to be a risk to themselves, for your peace of mind and ours, please take them somewhere less adventurous.
