“Natur Pur”

Reviewed 13 Dec 2012

“The previous review requires some clarification”

Reviewed 25 Nov 2012

I have stayed at Villa Toucan twice for extended periods, and have been fortunate to have experienced much of local life, and enjoyed the warmth and generosity of Manny and Emmanuelle Pinto and their family. No vacation rental in the area comes even close to Villa Toucan's amenities, view, solitude, and sheer Pura Vida. You are directly above the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica - yet well away from the cars, humidity, and insects you experience right on the beach. The house is spacious and well designed, with spacious private grounds, and attentive daily housekeeping. The owners live on the next hill - close enough to visit, but far enough to permit privacy. Every visitor has a different set of expectations about what hospitality means. To maintain the solitude of Villa Toucan, the Pintos are considerate to be unobtrusive - and generally allow visitors to define the level of interaction that they prefer. This is not coldness or lack of hospitality, but done out of respect for those who do not want to feel an obligation to be social. Upshot: You make the first move, and it will be reciprocated. Even though Costa Rica is safer than any other Central american country, there are the same issues here that exist almost any place you'd visit. Villa Toucan is in the middle of the rainforest, and well back from the road. For this reason the Pintos have a gated entry and two dogs who bark loudly. Incidentally the only danger associated with these dogs after you've been introduced is that they'll lick you to death. Manny has personally taken leadership in organizing community patrols along the road that have greatly reduced petty theft, etc, in the area. Nonetheless, your solitude at Villa Toucan requires that you be aware of and tolerant of some security measures. This all said, I plan to go back this next January and am counting the minutes!

Response from the manager Can't wait to see you guys!!!! Emmanuelle.

“Amazing house in a beautiful tropical setting”

Reviewed 9 Jun 2012

This was one of the most wonderful places we have ever stayed. Manuel and Emanuelle were perfect hosts. They were friendly and welcoming and provided us with plenty of information, advice and fresh eggs and fruit from the garden while giving us our privacy. The place was immaculate and the unexpected maid service kept it that way despite our best efforts. The house is beautifully designed to fit into the landscape. Although I am often attacked by mosquitos, this was never a problem during our weeklong stay, even though the house is open to the outside and we never closed the windows in the bedrooms. The kitchen is well equipped and the outdoor bathrooms and showers fantastic. We loved just sitting on the deck overlooking the garden and watching the butterfly and bird show (violaceous trogons, green macaws, a sloth and countless toucans and monkeys). Most visitors would like to have a car for the walk to the beach and particularly the steep climb back up. There are plenty of restaurants in the immediate area and a small, but well stocked grocery that will meet all of your self catering needs. If you are looking for a beautiful house and setting on this amazing coast and are comfortable staying close to nature (bugs will visit!) this is the place for you. Highly recommended. We can not wait to return.

“Beautiful home with the toucans!”

Reviewed 30 May 2012

We all loved our week at villa toucan. Every morning we were woken to the sounds of the howler monkeys and parrots. The villa itself was brilliantly equipped, and other than the first few days of rain - the view was gorgeous. We stayed with our 2 young boys who are still asking for a return visit - Manzanillio beach was a huge hit with its soft sand, and great for boogie boards! There was not really a down side - except perhaps the mozzies, especially after the rains. Finding poison dart frogs in the bathroom was a real treat - add to that the morning fly-by from the toucans and parrots... You do need a car to stay here as its a steep drive up the track, but as long as you do not want to be on the beach it is a great stay with kind and helpful hosts. We all loved it. If we had slightly older children we might opt for staying down by the beach so we could get about by bicycle, however for this point in time it was great.

“A highlight of our trip to Costa Rica!”

Reviewed 26 May 2012

We enjoyed the hammocks and the view and the toucans and other birds and bugs and frogs and lizards and monkeys we lived amongst during our stay at Toucan Villa. The beach was divine - only a short drive from the house- the showers were the hottest showers we had with the best water pressure for our entire stay in Costa Rica! Our kids want to return next year!

“A wonderful vacation in the Cosa Rican Jungle.”

Reviewed 2 Dec 2011

My wife Melissa and her parents stayed for a week at Villa Toucan. The Villa was everything that we expected. The four of us had an amazing time. It was so nice waking up to the natural sounds of the jungle. Our hosts, the Pinto family, was warm, welcoming and very friendly. We learned a lot from them, and they were very accommodating. There were so many great beaches close by, that we could have gone to a different one everyday. The restaurants all had fresh, local food and we were never disappointed. Our favorite was El Refugio was right at the bottom of the hill to the Villa. We want to stay another week in their beach house next fall. I would recommend Villa Toucan to anyone. All of us had a great time.

“True Relaxation”

Reviewed 30 Jun 2011

What can I say but one of the most enjoyable stays I have ever had anywhere. Have stayed all over Costa Rica and the sounds of the forest have never been better than here. Great setting. Comfortable bed. Wonderful hosts and a truly unique experience. I will be back.

“Rain Forest adventure!”

Reviewed 10 Mar 2011

Amazing family vacation in the rain forest. We saw sloths, toucans and two types of monkeys from the comfort of our own hammocks in the backyard. What an incredible jungle view...all the way to the beach. We truly enjoyed meeting everyone and the house pets Miruh the cat and Mia the dog. We were truly sad to leave. Staying in the rain forest was an expereince we will never forget.
