Description

Furnished photojournalist's home available for single or couple, comfortably up to two couples; and/or with children; on the edge of the lovely city of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas.

ENDLESS HOT WATER; UV purified water and soft-water system throughout.

1 km to town center, beautiful 10 minute walk. 2 km to central park and cathedral; 20 minute walk. 24/7 supermarket delivery, tortilla delivery, and some restaurant delivery to door. Pet-friendly. Nature reserve and organic garden. BBQ and permanent picnic table. Cheap taxis readily available for pickup or arrival.

Home is made of brick with southern exposure skylights in kitchen and eco-friendly east side brick brown painted wall outside to preserve heat.

San Cristobal de las Casas is located in the Chiapas highlands at over 7,000 feel (over 2,000 meters) so climate is cool all year long and in winter can even have light frosts at night to early morning. It's the central market for highland indigenous Maya communities so on any given day the population of 200 thousand increases to over 300 thousand.

*1 living room with cathedral ceilings, fireplace, couch that can narrowly sleep one adult, large chair. Living room opens through bar to cozy kitchen with 4-burner stove with oven and bottom broiler, full-size refrigerator, microwave, electric coffee pot, toaster oven, blender. Dishes, utensils, pots and pans.

*Internet wifi with good connection.

*1 carpeted master office/bedroom with full-size bed, Sky TV with 1 large flat-screen HD, and closet area; next door through small hallway BATHROOM with rustic sunken shower/tub.

*1 carpeted loft bedroom with full-size futon/bed and hammock, work table and chair.

*1 dining room with rustic pine dining table for 6, handmade embroidered tablecloths and books available.

*1/2 acre organic gardens available for picking what's available in season! Tons of apples and pears in the fall; winter gourmet lettuce; herbs galore and small strawberry patch. Trees with bird sanctuary especially nesting hummingbirds in spring.

(2000 meter property completely walled in shared with 2 other smaller cottage/cabin rentals at the back, see my other properties listed on my host page.)

*Shared BBQ, picnic table, swings and slide. *Small, quiet, parties allowed.

*Owner/hostess is subletting indefinitely since she will be travelling to the Mideast. She's a bilingual Mexican-American published journalist, Fulbright scholar in Pre-Columbian Art History and licensed tour guide in Mexico; and she will be available remotely to advise you about going to Maya villages and ancient archaeological Maya ruins such as Tonina, in Ocosingo and further into the Lacandon rainforest: Palenque, Bonampak and Yaxchilan.

*Property is securely gated in a safe, patrolled, green neighborhood and valley where foreigners jog daily, with excellent views of the Guadalupe Church, mountains, the Fogotico River Valley, the El Encuentro Ecological Park. 15 minute walk or 3-minute drive to the town-square or "zocalo", taxi fare to downtown is about U.S. $3.

*Interior driveway access parking secure if you bring a car.

*Pet-friendly. You can bring your dogs as long as they are neutered male or female as Ginger, my Golden Retriever, is not spayed. Two cats live on the premises and are fed in the dining room of the main house but are not allowed into the rest of the house. You can bring your cats too. Should you not want the cats in the dining room either, it's possible to find an alternative.

*1 shared washing machine managed by the housekeeper. Housekeeper service included: 3 mornings/week. She will wash and change provided linens and towels for free once a week; she will wash your personal clothes at request for a small fee to cover the electric, soap and wear and tear of the machine. Cost is comparable to laundry mat in town. Please note: Housekeeper will come daily to feed the 2 cats that are only allowed in the dining room. Ginger, my Golden Retriever, will also be fed outside and is not allowed in the house. At times, housekeeper will work out of the independent entrance basement room that is used to receive you and the cottage and cabin guests plus for storage.

House Rental: Children under 12 are free (don't add them to your reservation)

Electric included but for stays over 1 week it does NOT include cost for gas for stove and hot-water heater for shower, which is about US$8/week and also NOT for wood for fireplace which costs about $25US per cubic meter chopped, according to usage.

1x Cleaning fee for before and after departure $25.

Come visit for the most unique experience!

“Disappointing house - less than Average”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2015

Response from the owner Dear guest, thank you for sharing your review about your recent stay at my home. I apologize for the inconvenience. The situation has been totally fixed. However, as a published and honest journalist with a proven track record; I believe your review is a great exaggeration; because you don’t mention that you arrived 4 days earlier than planned. Under the circumstances I did not charge you for them so my housekeeper/manager, Marta, who you contradict from beginning to end, was totally at your service from day one, on the ball, fixing everything to your liking. Guests, please read the description of the property well before booking. It explains that the dining room is used for cats under the pet-friendly section but if the guest does not want that, we gladly find an alternative place for them which was done immediately. The defective couch was changed right away and a second one was also brought in; in fact one can see in the photograph submitted by the guest that it was taken outside of the residence. I also object to the photo of the torn sheets, since Marta would have never been placed such on any bed; perhaps it was torn by your child? During your stay you wrote me to tell me you were having such a fine time and asked if you could stay another three weeks, however since I was returning from the Mideast to occupy my house, I said no; is that why your review is so disturbed? Along with your correspondence you sent me photos of your child hugging my dogs so I should believe you must be a bad parent if you say in your review: “The dogs were very smelly and they had fleas, so we washed them and treated them on day 2 but to no avail. My son Gabriel was completely covered in bites from fleas in the blankets the whole time we were there.” ??? The photographs you sent me are so beautiful, including a party you made by the bbq for Gabriel; I will add them here to show folks what a kid-friendly place my home really is. Please future guests, judge for yourselves. My house/home is not for guests seeking American-style comfort but a unique Mexican experience. It was built by hand of traditional local materials including brick floors that may appear dirty but are washed; it’s filled with antiques that may appear dusty but are dusted; and many other unique treasures, including some of the very best of my published photojournalism work and my photo-paintings hanging all over the walls. Meanwhile the guest mentions one negative review on another popular website Air B and B which is only one of at least a hundred beautiful ones. And by the way, Marta is a wonderful indigenous woman who happens to be extremely intelligent who even has a cellphone she uses and knows how to make the most spectacular embroidery on the fine tablecloths provided. The everyday dishes that may chip with normal use are in the cabinet below are often replaced, but in the above glass cabinet, which obviously this guest failed to notice or mention, is the very fine perfect china which belonged to my great aunt. It really is a shame that these guests complain so much in the beginning yet at the end finally admit, albeit contradictorily: “The ONLY redeeming features of this house were the lovely location, the fabulous garden, which our kids enjoyed and Marta and her son Luis who took care of the house, they were so lovely and great with the kids and went out of their way to help.” IN FACT, Marta does not live in a one-room house like the guest says, she is like family to me: living in one room in the entrance to MY house that even has a television; and has full use of any of my three rentals on the property when available, including the huge garden filled with organic vegetables and fruit. Marta even raises her chickens there, in case a guest would like fresh ranch eggs!!!
