Description

Agatina's - a stunning 3 bedroom townhouse in the ancient walled city of Mdina. The property has been recently renovated to the highest standards yet its characteristic charm has been retained. Agatina's is a traditional house brimming with old character and charm yet complimented by modern furnishings.

Living in Mdina is comparable to residing in an open air museum. It is a perfect location for those who enjoy culture and for those who would truly like to experience residing in this small but magnificent city steeped in history where everything is within walking distance.

It is important to stress that we are actually situated WITHIN the city of Mdina (not outside Mdina, nor the outer limits of Mdina, or other towns/cities such as Rabat, Mtarfa, Bahrija etc.). Our location in the 'Silent City' of Mdina is unrivalled compared to many other available properties that advertise themselves as being in Mdina whilst being located outside of the city walls.

I shall proceed with a brief description of the house for the benefit of our potential future guests. The House is spread over 3 floors that are connected through an imposing and traditional Maltese staircase.

Agatina's is suitable for a variety of guests as it can comfortably host 7 people in its 3 large bedrooms. This makes the property suitable for friends, families, couples etc. A cot is available should you require one. Although there are 3 double bedrooms, we can accommodate 8 people (in exceptional circumstances and COVID restrictions permitting) by placing a single bed (folding bed) or two single beds (folding bed) in one of the bedrooms.

The ground floor/1st floor opens to a living room. Inside this room one can find 2 facing leather sofas with a large coffee table. There is also a chest of drawers where we provide numerous maps, books and other pieces of information that any tourist or guest may require. The property then leads to a small study area in the shape of a cosy desk that lies underneath the staircase.

One can then proceed to a separate dining room where one finds a large rectangular dining table and seating for Agatina's occupants. The dining room leads to a courtyard which is large enough to dine in and/or host a barbecue. A kitchen is also found on the ground/1st floor. The kitchen is furnished with a microwave, a washing machine, separate hobs and oven, toaster, fridge, kettle etc. Also situated on the ground/1st floor is a separate WC and a separate shower.

The 2nd floor - on the right side there is a bedroom with 2 single and comfortable beds. A large window overlooks onto the quiet alley that leads to the house. On the left hand side of the second floor there is a second bedroom with 2 single and comfortable beds. This second bedroom also enjoys an ensuite shower-room and an ensuite bathroom (allowing 2 people to wash at the same time - as it has 2 ensuite washing rooms) with a WC and 2 opposing 'his' and 'her' sinks. There is also a small balcony which can be accessed from this bedroom where one can sit and enjoy the tranquility that Mdina provides.

The 3rd and final floor consists of a large double ensuite bedroom which commands lovely views of Mdina's skyline. We like to refer to this room as the 'honeymoon suite'. This room enjoys an adjoining and recently renovated shower-room with a large shower, WC and sink. This bedroom also enjoys a small and pleasantly designed functioning kitchenette.

The 3rd and final floor also consists of a roof terrace where one can pleasantly enjoy a drink whilst enjoying stunning views of the Mdina Cathedral and Mdina's skyline.

Should any guest require anything in particular - please let us know. We live close-by and will do our best to help. Myself or a member of my family will be available to welcome the guests to the property. We can meet you in Mdina and show you the way to the house and give you a short tour of the house and Mdina should you desire. We consider ourselves accommodating and will do our best to ensure that your stay is comfortable. For any issue that emerges - please feel encouraged to contact us. We are also similarly available should you need any information regarding what to see and do on our beautiful island.

Apart from being a lovely house, its situation within the actual city of Mdina is unrivalled. Mdina is truly a gem which my description cannot do it justice. Mdina is one of Europe's finest examples of an ancient walled city and is extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture. The history of Mdina traces back more than 4000 years old and is one of Malta's earlier inhabited places. Lamp lit by night and referred to as "the silent city", Mdina is fascinating to visit for its timeless atmosphere as well as its cultural and religious treasures. Impressive palaces inhabited by Maltese nobility line its narrow, shady streets. The town was the old capital of Malta, and with its narrow streets, few inhabitants and beautiful views over the Island it is truly a magical town.

Mdina is situated in the north west of the island of Malta. Particular highlights within Mdina include the Natural History Museum, the Carmelite Church, Palazzo Falzon, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Cathedral Museum, the Mdina Experience, Mdina Dungeons and the Banca Giuratale amongst other attractions. A variety of cafes, wine bars, restaurants and museums are within walking distance from the property.

Mdina is also extremely close to the delightful town of Rabat which can also boast of its own attractions. St.Paul's Church, the Roman Villa, St. Paul's Catacombs and grotto are not to be missed! According to local tradition, this grotto is the place where St Paul resided after he was shipwrecked on the island of Malta.

Mdina is close to many sandy beaches. Gnejna bay, Golden Bay, Riviera can be reached within 10 minutes. For those seeking the rural, quiet and calm Malta, Mdina and Rabat can be used as the starting point for some of the most interesting walks in the country-side on the island. One can visit nearby Dingli, Bahrija, Bingemma, Imtahleb, Kuncizzjoni, Lunzjata, Chadwick Lakes and Verdala Castle. These spots will surely offer a glimpse of rural Malta, far-removed from the urban life.

Agatina's can be used as base to visit most sites in Malta such as Valletta, the 3 Cities, Marsaxlokk, Sliema, St. Julian's, Rabat, Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples amongst other attractions given the regular bus services that pass by Mdina.

Should you be travelled with children, we can guarantee that the trip will be enjoyable for them. Just outside Mdina is a playground and a large garden right underneath the city bastions. One can also opt for a traditional horse carriage ride (Karrozin) or a ride on the trackless 'train' that will take you around the Windy roads of Rabat and Mtarfa (adjacent towns to Mdina). An audio visual display of the Mdina Experience or a visit to the Mdina dungeons can also offer a unique cultural experience.

Mdina and the surrounding areas also host some traditional Feasts and Festivals. These include:

The Feast of St. Joseph celebrated in March, Rabat.

Medieval Mdina celebrated in April, Mdina where The Silent City comes to life with a Medieval theme. Entrance fees for all museums and attractions in Mdina are reduced.

Easter Week: there is a Good Friday pageant celebrated in Rabat where Christ's passion and crucifixion are depicted by statues born aloft through the streets of Rabat.

The Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul celebrated on the 29th June in Mdina.

The Feast of St. Paul is also celebrated in July in Rabat.

With regards to parking - there is ample public parking right outside Mdina. You should park here, as it is illegal to park inside Mdina's city walls without a permit. We may be able to get you a permit, thus enabling you to park inside Mdina and will do our best to do so, if you provide us with the information about your rental vehicle. In the unlikely possibility that we are still unable to get a local parking permit, you would have to park just outside Mdina, a mere 2 minutes walk from Agatina's.

Overall Malta is a stunning country to visit with a little bit of everything to offer. You won't regret your stay here and we guarantee your time spent in the Medieval gem that is Mdina will be a pleasurable one. Mdina is a remarkable city that deserves to be visited at the very least. The opportunity to base yourself here during your stay is one that should be grasped.

Environmental Contribution Payment - The Government of Malta has recently introduced a charge that is liable on all guests staying at all types of accommodation. All revenue generated from this initiative will be directed solely and exclusively to upgrade and embellish the local infrastructure in touristic areas around the Maltese Islands. The contribution is payable by all tourists/guests who are 18 years or older on the day of arrival. It amounts to €0.50c per person for each night spent at our accommodation. The contribution is capped at a maximum of €5 for each continuous stay. We are obliged to collect this contribution and then pass it onto the Government. An official and government-issued ‘Notice to Guests’ will be available at the property that further explains the environmental contribution and the reason for this charge.The exact sum due will be determined during your stay, and I once again apologise for the inconvenience.

Getting around

:Malta is a small country. Short distances need to be covered by the average tourist. All major sites in Malta are close by. All major sites in Mdina and the surrounding areas are in walking distance from each other. Given that Mdina is a tourist must-see, it is a major hub for the local bus system and most routes pass through Mdina. Mdina is also well linked through public transport with many other top sites and visiting other spots on the island will not be a problem.Taxis also congregate close to Mdina.Should you rent a car, there is ample public parking right outside Mdina. Only permanent residents are allowed to park in Mdina, however we might be able to obtain a parking parking permit.

Interaction with guest

Myself or a member of my family will be available to welcome the guests to the property. We can meet you anywhere in Mdina and show you the way to the house should you have any difficulties. We will then proceed to give you a short tour of the house. If you desire we could also give you a quick tour of Mdina. We live less than 1 minute's walk from the property. We consider ourselves accommodating and will do our best to ensure that your stay is comfortable. We do our best to make sure that your trip is an enjoyable one. We have been to Malta several times before, and found this house on a previous visit. We have just returned from a week with a group of friends, none of whom had been to Malta before. We had the most fabulous week, and all plan to return. Booking with Andrea was so straightforward, and Joanna and Joe could not have been more helpful while we were there, with advice on everything we needed. The house was well equipped with everything we wanted, and to actually be staying in Mdina itself was so special.
