Description from owner

Description

Relax in front of the multi-fuel stove, or dine al fresco on the patio outside this charming cottage which is all on one level, ideal for families, couples & pets, and anyone who may have difficulty with stairs. Garden Cottage, at Exmoor Cottage Holidays, is in a peaceful village location and is warm & comfortable with an enclosed patio garde, large children's play area and just five minutes walk from a shop & pub.

Garden Cottage (part of "Town Tenement Farm") is cosy and snug, having recently been renovated with a modern kitchen & wet-room and part double-glazed. There is a large living room with exposed beams, a multi-fuel stove, leather seating and Freeview TV and a dining area with dining table and chairs. There are French doors to a lovely enclosed patio garden with a passionflower, virginia creeper and a picnic table.

The fully-equipped kitchen has an electric oven & hob, fridge (freezer box) and microwave. There are two small bedrooms, a double bedroom and a twin, and a wetroom with shower, hand-basin & WC.

No-one can be bored at Garden Cottage. If the WiFi and 100 or so Freeview TV channels aren't enough there are many books, games & DVD's, and three acres of grounds to explore (with wild-flower meadow, wildlife pond, and large children's play area with two towers, bridge, swing, slide, climbing wall, fireman's pole, etc). Watch the birds in the patio garden or enjoy a family picnic in the grounds which has lovely views of Exmoor.

A cot and high chair are usually available to hire (£5 each), a fire guard and safety gate are available free of charge, and towel sets available for hire (£5 per set comprising bath towel and hand towel) - all subject to availability - please check well in advance and book early if available.

Pets are very welcome £20 per stay/per pet, payable on arrival. The types and numbers of pets MUST be mentioned in advance, preferably in the Message To Owner section of the Booking Request. Not all pets will be welcome and there are number limits - please check in advance. Hand-soap, cleaning materials and tea towels are provided, and a welcome pack with a few essentials (until you can get to a shop) including a basket of logs & kindling, tea, coffee, sugar, fresh milk, bin bag, toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner & matches.

Garden Cottage is in the quiet and peaceful village of Challacombe and within the Exmoor National Park. Within 300 yards is an excellent pub with award-winning food and real ales, and a handy general shop and Post Office. Challacombe has excellent local walks and is an ideal central location from which to explore Exmoor, the sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde, and the spectacular coastline of North Devon & Somerset.

The Garden Cottage is one of five holiday cottages (known as "Exmoor Cottage Holidays") converted from a former farm. The cottages form a 'U' shape around a charming courtyard and each has a log burning stove and an enclosed garden. The other four cottages (sleeping 1-6 people) are available separately, look under "Challacombe". The owners, John & Melanie Moore, live just next door and like to greet all customers personally.

We available most days to help you plan your day.

Getting around

Car drives offer the best flexibility for seeing the sights and getting around in our area. There is a taxi company in the village for tours. Alternatively there are many walks from the cottage door - including a short walk to the shop/Post Office and local pub (with award winning food).

Interaction with guest

The owners of Exmoor Cottage Holidays, John & Melanie, live just next door and welcome each guest personally. We are available most days to help you get the very most from your stay. We have lived in the area since 1997 and can advise the best walks, places to visit, restaurants, local attractions, etc. and show you them on an Ordnance Survey map (which you may borrow). “Eight Peaceful Days On The Edge Of Wonderful Exmoor”

Reviewed 9 May 2023

We have just returned from our fourth stay with Exmoor Cottage Holidays at Challacombe, on the edge of Exmoor, and we have already booked for next year. Melanie and John now feel like friends. The cottages are very comfortable and maintained with care. A great plus is that the owners are on site. The nearby pubs are good for food. Many attractions are very near, from the zoo, gardens and country houses to beaches and country walks. Ilfracombe is a short drive. For detailed advice, just get Melanie and John talking - they know a huge amount about the area.

Response from the owner Thank you for this great review. We really are well located for all of the things you mention, and fortunate to be in a quiet village location - the best of both worlds. It was our pleasure to welcome you back and we look forward to catching up again next year too. Melanie and John

“Pleasant cottage in a lovely location.”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2020

We had a very pleasant stay in Garden Cottage. It is well equipped and comfortable. It was good to have fast internet access, there really was no phone signal! Melanie was very attentive, quickly producing replacements for 2 lightbulbs that failed. We enjoyed the peace and tranquillity, the only traffic we ever heard was an occasional tractor, usually with a sheepdog on the back. We were fascinated watching the birds on the feeders outside the garden door. We had two enjoyable meals in the Black Venus. It was essential to book in advance. This was true of most things. On the days we couldn’t book a restaurant, we ate in, one BBQ, one curry. The weather wasn’t particularly good considering it was mid-August, so we didn’t do much local walking. We did explore some of North Devon – RHS Rosemoor garden at Great Torrington was very impressive, and we did a pleasant 3 mile walk in the grounds of Arlington Court (NT). Both needed to be booked in advance. We also visited Watersmeet, a very impressive place. The walk down from the carpark and back is a bit strenuous, but well worth it. Woolacombe on Sunday in pleasant weather was ram packed, but the locals said it was less busy than some days! We walked from Tarr Steps upstream to the footbridge and back, really beautiful. We parked at Lynton, took the Cliff Railway down to Lynmouth, but when we saw the size of the queues to go back up we walked! We visited Clovelly, which was not that impressive. Yes, a lovely setting, but lots of people, and the walk down and back up is a bit taxing. Covid-19 social distancing: a bit mixed. Some people were very good, others didn’t seem bothered. The pubs were very well organised. All in all we enjoyed ourselves, but it would have been good to have had better weather.

“Boomerang visits”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2019

How many times can I say what a great little place this is? We've been back here on numerous occasions and at different times of year and the place never disappoints. The pluses for us are; no mobile coverage (but superfast broadband in the cottage area), no traffic (even at peak times), no noisey neighbours (on-site kids playground at the top of the hill), no dogs left howling in the cottages whilst owners walk to the excellent gastro-pub 2 mins away, tasty "home cooked" take-aways from the village shop 2 mins away and countless footpaths to wander the local countryside on. Be mindful that "footpaths" do NOT mean tarmac pavements and that country lanes (without pavements) can be winding (hairpin bends) and steep at times. That's why there are some fantastic views from the road as you drive along the A39. What traffic you do meet tends not to be pushy or inconsiderate. Be prepared for a slower pace of life when you get here and for exceptionally friendly natives.
