Description from owner

Description

Step back in time and relax in front of the lovely inglenook fireplace in this cosy C17 to 18th cottage at Exmoor Cottage Holidays, ideal for couples, families & pets. Inglenook Cottage is in a peaceful village location and is very warm & comfortable with character features, enclosed patio, large children's play area and just five minutes walk from a shop & pub.

Inglenook Cottage (at "Town Tenement Farm") has the special atmosphere of a home that has been lived in for a long time. It is comfortable & warm having recently been renovated (with modern kitchen & bathroom, insulated walls and double-glazing). The large living room has an attractive inglenook fireplace (with bread oven & salt safe) and multi-fuel stove, comfortable seating and Freeview TV. Near the kitchen is a dining area with dining table & chairs.

The separate kitchen is very well equipped with electric oven & hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer, and a stable door leads out to a lovely enclosed patio garden. There is also a small south-facing front garden with a picnic table, ideal for al fresco dining.

There are three bedrooms upstairs, a double, a single and a superking-sized (or twin utilising a ziplink bed). The bright, modern bathroom has a bath, separate shower, handbasin & WC.

No-one can get bored at Inglenook Cottage. If the free WiFi and nearly 100 Freeview TV channels aren't enough there are many books, games & DVD's, and three acres of grounds to explore (with wild-flower meadow, wildlife pond, and large children's play area with two towers, bridge, swing, slide, climbing wall, fireman's pole, etc). Watch the birds in the front garden and the many butterflies in the buddleia, or enjoy a family picnic in the grounds which have lovely views of Exmoor.

A cot and high chair are usually available to hire (£5 each), a fire guard and stair gate are available free of charge, and towel sets available for hire (£5 per set comprising bath towel and hand towel) - all subject to availability - please check well in advance and book early if available.

Pets are very welcome £20 per stay/per pet, payable on arrival. The types and numbers of pets MUST be mentioned in advance, preferably in the Message To Owner section of the Booking Request. Not all pets will be welcome and there are number limits - please check in advance. Hand-soap, cleaning materials and tea towels are provided, and a welcome pack with a few essentials (until you can get to a shop) including a basket of logs & kindling, tea, coffee, sugar, fresh milk, bin bag, toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner & matches

Inglenook Cottage is in the quiet and peaceful village of Challacombe and within the Exmoor National Park. Within 300 yards is an excellent pub with award-winning food and real ales, and a handy general shop and Post Office. Challacombe has excellent local walks and is an ideal central location from which to explore Exmoor, the sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde, and the spectacular coastline of North Devon & Somerset.

Inglenook Cottage is one of five holiday cottages (known as "Exmoor Cottage Holidays") converted from a former farm. The cottages form a 'U' shape around a charming courtyard and each has a log burning stove and an enclosed garden. The other four cottages (sleeping 1-6 people) are all available separately, please look under "Challacombe". The owners, John & Melanie Moore, live just next door and like to greet all customers personally. We are usually available most days help you plan your day.

Getting around

Car drives offer the best flexibility for seeing the sights and getting around in our area. There is a taxi company in the village for tours. Alternatively there are many walks from the cottage door - including a short walk to the shop/Post Office and local pub (with award winning food).

Interaction with guest

The owners of Exmoor Cottage Holidays, John & Melanie, live just next door and welcome each guest personally. We are available most days to help you get the very most from your stay (and to feed the birds!). We have lived in the area since 1997 and can advise the best walks, places to visit, restaurants, local attractions, etc. and show you them on an Ordnance Survey map (which you may borrow). We can help light the fire in your cottage, show you how to keep it going, and we sometimes have some special offers just for our guests.

Response from the owner Thank you for your lovely review. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our Inglenook Cottage and that you found it to be comfortable and well equipped. A good sleep is very important and we did lots of research to find great mattresses - it is good to get feedback, thank you. The wisteria and lilacs have been particularly great this year, on the whole the gardens have put on a lovely show again. We are very lucky that Challacombe is a quiet village - with the added benefits of the excellent Black Venus Inn and a little local shop... and the rest of Exmoor on the doorstep. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Best wishes Melanie and John

“INGLENOOK COTTAGE”

Reviewed 6 Jun 2021

This is a lovely cottage in Challacombe within walking distance to a small shop & P.O & a friendly pub (Black Venus) which has a beer garden with great views only 10 mins walk. Cottage set in lovely grounds with a play area for children & a pond, there are 5 cottages in the courtyard, where there is a bench outside the cottage & a private yard area at the back with a seperate back passage out to the car park. The cottage was very comfortable with lots of period features, an inglenook & an old fireplace upstairs in the main bedroom. There is another double with twin beds & a single room. Bathroom has a bath & shower, although i found the shower a bit on the small size. We found this place to be ideal for visiting beaches, Croyde bay is worth a visit and we went to various towns & villages during our stay, Porlock, although down a very steep hill was very quaint.

Response from the owner Thank you for your lovely review. We are glad that you had a comfortable stay in Inglenook Cottage - it is possibly over 300yrs old and we felt we should keep as many features as we could! The cottages all have a garden each, with seating - ideal for enjoying a relaxing day in the gardens. Croyde is lovely and just one of many excellent beaches along the north coast. And Porlock is a fascinating little village - as you say, quite an interesting road in though. Having an excellent pub and a little shop within walking distance is a bonus, no need to drive everywhere. We hope to welcome you again. Best wishes Melanie and John

“Not recommended”

Reviewed 22 Aug 2020

The cottage is lovely, but needs some TLC. The living room and cupboards smelt of mould which made it unpleasant to sit downstairs. The sofas and downstairs carpets needed updating (I am not normally fussy, but they felt smelly and too shabby for a letting property). Some of the kitchen equipment was caked in grime and we spent an hour scrubbing them clean. When I gave feedback about the mouldy smell, the owner said it was the smell of food as we hadn't shut the kitchen door when cooking - so silly as we hadn't eaten there for 3 days because of the smell of mould! She wasn't open to feedback and was defensive. This is the first time I have ever complained about a holiday letting, and I have used a lot, but I do feel other people should be aware of the issues. The worst part was that the owner charged us £60 extra cleaning fee for not emptying the bathroom and bedroom bins, leaving about 8 coffee granules on the kitchen surface and got airing out the smell of food (when we hadn't eaten there for 3 days). A switch on the oven was broken and she charged me for it too. Beware!

Response from the owner Thank you for your review. We regret that we do sometimes find it necessary to charge for breakages, and in exceptional cases for extra cleaning. We always explain any extra charges. We wish you happy holidays in the future. Best wishes Melanie and John

“Idyllic cottage full of character nestled in charming Challacombe, Exmoor”

Reviewed 31 Jul 2020

Challacombe is a small and quaint village nestled in the hills of Exmoor. Inglenook cottage is a couple of hundred yards off the main road, near a stream and surrounded by natural beauty. I booked Inglenook cottage on recommendation and as I was part of a small group of motorcyclists, I was keen to rent a cottage which had space to securely accomodate the motorcycles and also be very comfortable for four weary riders! On our trip down to the cottage, I left a message to inform the owners we would be arriving late and the keys were left in a safe place for us. When we arrived at the cottage, the fire was lit and there was a welcome pack with all the information about the cottage and the local area, as well as tea, coffee, milk and sugar. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well stocked with cutlery, crockery etc and even had plenty of washing detergents which was an unexpected bonus. The bedrooms and bathroom were spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable and all very warm, so much so I had to open my window. There is lots to see and do in the area but as my friends and I were on a motorcycling adventure, we ventured further afield visiting many places rather than staying close to the cottage. Melanie came to see us in the morning of our first day and I have to say how delightfully welcoming and helpful she was and gave us so much information on places she thought may be worth visiting including the local area, including the local (Black Venus) where the food is delicious. We were told not to hesitate in contacting her if there were any issues or we needed any information. All in all, a pleasurable and memorable stay and my biker mates have said they would definitely go back and stay at Inglenook Cottage. I can't rate it highly enough.

Response from the owner Thank you for such a great and detailed review. It was our pleasure to welcome you and your friends (plus lovely motorbikes!). We are glad that you were comfortable and warm in Inglenook Cottage (despite the poor weather), and found it to have everything that you needed for your stay. It is nice to know that our info of places to visit was helpful - some great rides nearby. The food at the local pub is indeed delicious. How lovely that it is just a short stroll away. We look forward to welcoming you all back again soon. Very best wishes Melanie and John

Response from the owner Thank you for recently reviewing your 2017 stay in our Inglenook Cottage. We are very sorry that you found Inglenook cold and regret not knowing this while you were here.
