This is a shared house or 'Homeaway' setting offering a private guest room with private bath. This is not a whole house rental.
We are the sole owners of this single-family home located in upper north west Washington, DC and live on the premises. As such, our guest room is legal according to property laws and regulations of Washington, DC.
Clean affordable cheerful guest room with private bath in a shared home setting (hosts are the homeowners). We accept reservations for 1 guest. We have one private guest room with 1 private guest bath - meaning you will be our only guest. We cannot accommodate more than 1 person.
We have 1 short-haired cat. For guest comfort and we'll-being, if you are allergic, please stay with a non-cat host.
Our home is a 1937 three storey red brick colonial. It is not 100% renovated but we do not do any interior work when hosting. We've modernized the electric system, plumbing, bathrooms and installed modern central heat and air-conditioning.
We're located in a charming, quiet, and safe historic neighborhood in Upper North West Washington, DC northern Brightwood a few blocks from another historic neighborhood, Takoma. The Metro station which services our neighborhood is Takoma (red line). We are 1 mile from the station. It's an easy safe walk or take the bus from the station to our corner. Mon-Fri 6:15 am - 9:00 am we can usually give our guests a lift to Takoma metro station.
Washington, DC is small city so although we're not downtown it's very easy to travel by public transportation, car, or bike to downtown Washington, downtown Bethesda, downtown Silver Spring or Northern Virginia places of interest like Arlington National Cemetery, or Old Town Alexandria.
We're also convenient to Rock Creek Tennis Center /Citi-Open Tennis Tournament, American Univ- AU Park, MicroSoft East, National Institute of Health & Walter Reed Military Hospital, AFI Silver Theatre, Embassy Row, FDA White Oak, Howard University, Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Union Station & Library of Congress.

Room rate includes Sealy Posturepedic bed (new - real mattress with built-in pillowtop & boxspring foundation), new pillows & bed linens, IKEA furnishings, large desk with a new high-end ergonomic task chair, coffee-tea-cocoa-Deer Park Spring Water, coffee, tea, snacks, new bath linens, FIOS high-speed WiFi, large HDTV (in living room), guest room closet is stocked with new hangers, new slippers, new cotton-terry bath robes, remodeled modern guest bath, new hair dryer, quality skin care & hair care products, ceiling fan & modern air-conditioning, little library, ambient sound machine (choose from white noise or nature sounds) and free safe easy non-competitive street parking.
Prior to your arrival, our home is tended to by a professional housekeeping service. However, if you are allergic to cats we will be unable to host you. This is for your comfort and safety.
The guest room mattress and pillows are in protective encasements.
We are 1.4 miles from the Citi Open Tennis Tournament at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center.
On the desk in the guest room and on the book shelf you'll find Washington DC tourist brochures, maps & guidebooks. If you'd like to borrow SmartTrip please request. Guests may borrow metro cards for use during their stay.
Our neighborhood, Brightwood, is a historic African American and Jewish neighborhood. We are on the border of 2 historic DC neighborhoods; Brightwood and Takoma. Our home is within walking/biking distance of Takoma Metro Station (1 ml) & Takoma shops and restaurants.
There is also a bus stop 5 houses away on our corner. Bus trip to and from our block to Takoma metro station is 5-8 minutes. Or take the Express MetroBus to downtown DC and be there in 20-30 minutes (depending on your final destination). You can also catch the Express Bus to downtown Silver Spring in 8 minutes. From Friendship Heights take either MetroRail or MetroBus or RideOn (Maryland Bus) to NIH, Walter Reed Military Medical Hospital, Bethesda Shopping/Dining or Rockville.
Monday-Friday 6:15-9:00 am I'm usually available to offer guests rides to the following places:

-Takoma Aquatic Center (0.7 ml)
-Friendship Heights Metro Station-Upscale Shopping-Dining (easy access to NIH-Walter Reed-Bethesda Business District-AmericanU-National Cathedral-Historic Georgetown)
-Chevy Chase DC Shopping & Dining-Politics & Prose Bookstore-Little Red Fox Market-Little Beast- Bread & Chocolate
-Rock Creek Equestrian Center
-Rock Creek Tennis Center
-Adams Morgan Shopping & Dining, walking distance (many bus options too) to Woodley Park, National Zoo, Embassy Row & Dupont Circle
Beautiful Rock Creek Park is only 2 blocks away. Takoma Aquatic Center (indoor Olympic-size pool) easy 15 minute walk. Rock Creek Golf Course, Tennis Courts & Rock Creek Horse Center are all near by. If you like biking, Capital city Bikeshare kiosk is on our street, 1 block from our house.
HDTV over-sized flatscreen with AT&T WatchTV Streaming Service, Amazon Prime in the living room. Please make yourself at home.
For guest convenience there is a 4.9 cubic ft mini-fridge inside the guest room. Although we cannot permit cooking inside our home (except by microwave), we do share our microwave, coffeemaker, electric kettle, and full-size fridge with our guests.
Markets available near by are Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Safeway, Giant, Yes! Organic Market, variety of farmer's markets within walking distance of our home or easy MetroBus/MetroRail (train) access. If I'm going to the supermarket or farmer's market you're welcomed to come along.
Things to know:
-Our 1937 3-storey brick colonial style home is not completely renovated at this time. However, we do not do any work on the interior of our property when hosting guests.
-We are a married couple in our 50's. My husband is a fine art photographer and I'm a social worker.
-Both the guest room and guest bath are located on the 2nd floor of our 3 storey home.
-There are approximately 16 stairs between our first and second floors. The exterior of our home has 4 porch steps to the front door.
-We do have 1 pet (1 short-haired cat). His name is Rocket. He's a neutered rescue Ginger Tabby cat with all of his shots. The vet estimates his age to be 4 years. He's very social but is scared of loud noises like trash trucks and fireworks.
-Our home is non-smoking but we do permit cigarette smoking outside. Please use the ashtrays. Absolutely no cigar smoking on our porch or anywhere on our property. Thank you.
-Our house is NOT handicap accessible. It is a multi-level single family home. The guest room and guest bath are BOTH located on the second floor. There are 16 steps between the first and second levels. We do not have a stairwell lift nor an elevator.
-This is a pensione or 'Homestay' style lodging. It is a shared house setting. You will be sharing our home with us, your hosts.
-We rent 1 guest room with 1 private bath. You will be our only guest.
-Our accommodation is for solo travellers (1 person). We cannot host more than 1 guest.
-The guest room has an American queen-size bed.
-The guest room and guest bath are 100% private during your stay. We have our own ensuite bath in the master bedroom. and do not use the guest bath when hosting. :-)
-Common (shared) areas are the living room, dining room, stairwell to second floor (both the guest room & guest bath are located on the 2nd floor) and front porch. All other areas are private and guests should not enter.
-Since morning schedules may vary, guests are free to help themselves to coffee, tea, hot cocoa & snacks.
-Our kitchen is very small and has not yet been renovated. However, it can be used for light meal preparation but not for cooking. Guests may use our microwave, electric kettle, coffee maker, toaster and refrigerator/freezer. For guest convenience there is also a mini-fridge inside the guest room.
-We cannot permit guests to cook inside our home due to insurance restrictions for guest rentals in Washington, DC. However guests may use our coffee maker, electric kettle, toaster and microwave.
-Our home is NOT located in downtown Washington, DC. We are in Upper North West Washington, DC on the border of two historic neighborhoods - Brightwood and Takoma. We are 4.5 miles north of the White House, and 3 miles east of Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights. 5.4 miles east of NIH/Walter Reed Military Medical Center, and 2.3 miles south of downtown Silver Spring Maryland. University of Maryland College Park is 5.7 miles from our home.
-We are exactly 1 mile from Takoma metro station. If you don't care to walk or bike, when we're available we're happy to give you a lift. Or catch the bus from our corner just a few houses away.
-Sorry we cannot accommodate those travelling with pets.
-Parking is safe, free and non-competitive street parking. You will find easy parking on our block. We have a visitor parking permit for your car so you may park on our block undisturbed. Just make sure to obey city parking regulations like allowing 10 feet on either side of the fire hydrant and 20 feet from the corner and/or stop sign.
-Capital Bikeshare kiosk 1 block away on our street. Washington is a very bike friendly city.

-Please message us with your estimated arrival time and estimated check-out time to ensure someone will be home to greet you and to arrange collection of our house key when you depart. If you require special check-in/out times please make your request at time of booking, or as soon as possible. If you like, we can arrange self check-in. The key will be in a lockbox hanging from our house doorknob. We will send you a unique code to access the lockbox. It's very secure yet easy to use. Thank you.
