Description

Matsu Sho An is a 120 year-old timber house or machiya authentically restored to its original condition, with modern conveniences added for the discerning traveller.

This is the ideal place if you wish to experience living the traditional Japanese life of old Kyoto but with all modern conveniences and facilities. Nothing has been spared to make Matsu Sho An an experience to be treasured in the beautiful and charming city of Kyoto.

The house is ideally located in the heart of Kyoto in an exclusive neighbourhood.

Live like the locals live, with famous restaurants nearby, and specialty shops like Ippodo Tea and quaint Japanese paper, lacquer and antique shops in the vicinity. The famous Kamogawa River is only a 2-minute walk away.

It is easily accessible by subway, buses and taxis to all the major tourist sites in Kyoto.

The house is very large 180 sq metres (1,900 sq ft) in area, and has 3 traditional Japanese outdoor gardens with cherry and plum blossom trees, and an authentic zen garden for quiet contemplation and reflection. It can comfortably accommodate up to six guests at any one time.

It is ideal for couples who would like to live in an exquisitely restored machiya, and experience first-hand the culture and history of Japan as it used to be.

If you stay in our house, you will have exclusivity and utmost privacy in one of the most exclusive private residences in Kyoto. You will not be sharing it with anyone else.

Getting around

Being in the heart of Kyoto, taking a taxi is a breeze. One can hail a taxi very easily from Teramachi-dori, less than 15 metres from the house. The subway station of Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station along the Tozai line is less than 500 metres away. Marutamachi Station on the Karasuma line is also 500 metres from the house. Buses to major tourist sites can be taken quite easily along Marutamachi-dori which is 50 metres away. There are many buses along Oike-dori; less than 400 metres walk. There are many buses along Karawamachi-dori which is only 50 metres away.

Interaction with guest

We will be in contact with the guests before arrival, with information on how to get to the house and what to expect upon arrival. We will personally be at the house to greet and welcome our guests with special Japanese tea and snacks. We will also explain the amenities and facilities available so that the guests will fully enjoy the experience of staying in Matsu Sho An.
