“Very spacious, 3 storey house in the woods, well equipped, extremely quiet at night”

Reviewed 16 Nov 2016

Although I liked the property, 'cosy chalet' suggests a small mountain hut - this is actually a fully equipped 3 storey house, 3 bedroom house. It's built on a considerable slope, so the 'split level' design can feel a bit unusual. It has washing machine & drier on the ground floor, along with a spacious lounge with TV, table tennis, sofa bed & bathroom with shower. Up the stairs to the second floor (the biggest floor) - open plan kitchen (with microwave and standard oven) & lounge, TV and DVD player, with a double and a twin bedroom. And another bathroom with shower. Also a wraparound balcony/ terrace, including an outdoor gas barbecue, table & chairs. Up another flight of stairs to the top floor. A big master bedroom, with huge picture window leading to an external balcony, lots of lovely wooden panelling. And another bathroom, this one with a bath-tub. And a quirky little balcony area, including a couple of easy chairs, overlooking the second floor. With 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a sofa bed, the house could easily accommodate 3 couples and two children. We were actually a little dwarfed by all the space, and took a while adjusting to the silence and empty houses outside, especially at night, when some of the party found it spooky! We would have preferred it if all the windows had curtains or blinds, it felt a bit unsettling with uncovered windows on the landings and hallway at night. It's surrounded by pine trees, with similar houses nearby, although they appeared empty whilst we were there. As there are other houses higher up the slope, the property can feel less private and a bit overlooked. There are few landmarks, so you have to be very observant to spot the driveway along the main Pine Mountain Lake rd, particularly after dark. The driveway is short but steep, and you have to be very careful doing a 3 point turn on a steep slope to get your car in and out of the driveway. Everything was clean, although some of the appliances didn't work (kettle, DVD player). Communication was good, (and necessary to pay the one-off access fee to Pine Mountain Lake and collect the obligatory car-parking pass before trying to access the area.) Accessing the beautiful lakeside, with it's swimming, picnic areas and spotless restrooms does really require driving from this property - there's no sidewalk beside the road, no streetlights. It took us around 2 minutes to drive there. Yosemite Valley was about an hour's drive, via the steep mountain pass of Big Oak Flat Rd.
