Our rustic home is an aesthetically-appointed barn in a woodland setting. It has an open floor plan upstairs and down; a summer sleeping porch with double bed; odorless, waterless composting toilet; separate shower; patio with firepit and wood-fired cooking oven. Upstairs sleeps family of 4 or CLOSE friends (with queen bed and two twins with no doors in between). 5 minutes from downtown LP, 20 minutes from Whiteface Ski/Mountain Biking center. High ceilings. Well-equipped kitchen.

Indoors and out, Ryder Hollow is all about melding your experience with nature. In the great room, the north picture window encompasses the majority of a 12' x 27' wall with a sweeping view to a meadow in the northern boreal forest. Wood-burning stove and in-floor heat for cold evenings.

Ryder Hollow's western boundary beyond the lean-to borders state land. A hiking/snowshoeing trail leads to a neighborhood trail that climbs 500-feet in elevation to a mountaintop with remarkable views to the High Peaks. This is a 2-hour+ round trip from our barn. We are 1/4 mile from the northern entrance to the Northville-Placid Trail and wilderness paddling on the Chubb River is a prime destination.

Getting around

Uber, Rick's Taxi, the free green trolley that does a circuit downtown, a shuttle to the mountain during ski season from local hotels, but for maximum flexibility, you need a car. In winter it's helpful to have all-wheel drive, if not snow tires. If none, be flexible and travel on days without snowfall.

We like to greet and orient our guests as our facilities are unique and not standardized. If we are not able to greet guests, we like to have a dialogue prior to arrival. We're Adirondack enthusiasts. We moved here from NYC fifteen years ago and can turn you on to both recreational and cultural opportunities. Both abound here. We can help you plan your perfect day according to the season and the weather.

House rules

The driveway dips down into Ryder Hollow from the top of the drive which is on a hidden curve. When leaving, take time to carefully consult the convex mirror across the street on the telephone pole. There is no dishwasher and there are breakable things that we ask renters to handle with care. Children under five or rowdy kids need supervision. It's important to resist crawling out on top of the pantry which is accessible from the stair.

We loved the artists hideaway. More beautiful than the pictures. They thought of everything. Very cozy and quaint. A true retreat in the mountains.
