Pépoulie is a typical farmhouse of South West France, built before the French Revolution, with 19th century additions. Sensitively restored, with all modern facilities, including a 12 x 5 metre salt water swimming pool.
It is a kilometre north of the village of Puylaurens between Toulouse and Castres, and enjoys over 2100 hours of sunshine a year (cf Paris with around 1600 hours per year).
It consists of the house itself (where we live), stables converted into the gîte for our guests, and a workshop. Situated on the crest of a hill, in the middle of a hectare of land (around two and a half acres), it has panoramic views of the rolling countryside all around.
Growing around the house are cherries, pears, plums, figs, grapes, apples and quinces, as well as organically grown vegetables, all of which our guests are welcome to pick.
This area of SW France, in the Tarn département of the Midi-Pyrenees region, is known as "the French Tuscany". It is rich in history and culture - the city of Albi (named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2010), the Occitan language, Cathars, the town of Sorèze, cassoulet, the local Gaillac wine - and just about every village and town around has something worth exploring or experiencing.
One of the best hotel-restaurants in the area is Cuq en Terrasses in the village of Cuq-Toulza, about ten kilometres from Puylaurens on the road to Toulouse. The cuisine is outstanding, and you'll have to book a day in advance to get a table. Another very good place to eat is the beautifully restored hotel in Puylaurens, Cap de Castel. You'll need to book beforehand. Their site also gives a very good idea of why this area of France is so special.
Have a look at the guest book on our website to read what our guests have said about their stay at Pépoulie. And look also at the Pépoulie blog to learn more what it's like living and staying here.
We work with the carbon offset organisation, Climate Care to help reduce the environmental effect of your trip. And to encourage environmentally friendlier travel to and from Pépoulie, have a look at our free offer on our site.
The gîte sleeps six to eight adults. It has one very large and two smaller bedrooms. We welcome children, and make your stay as child friendly (and parent friendly as possible. There are also two cots, two children's beds, and two highchairs available, plus lots of other children’s equipment. We also offer a babysitting service at 8 euros an hour.
The large openplan living, dining and kitchen area has french doors at front and back, with views of the rolling countryside stretching to the horizon.
The kitchen is fully equipped (dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, etc).
There is high speed wireless internet access in the gîte.
The pool is 12 x 5 metres, and uses environment-friendlier salt rather than chlorine. It also has views over the rolling countryside.
The village of Puylaurens is about a kilometre away, with bakeries, two supermarkets, two restaurants, and other services like petrol station, ironmonger, stationer, estate agents, and so on. The weekly market, with stalls selling vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, cheese, bread etc is on Wednesdays.
Long term lets: perhaps you want to try working in your present job but at a distance via our broadband, whilst enjoying the pleasures of living in France (something our 2008/09 long let tenants did - see what they say below). Or you need a base from which to look for a house to buy in this area of SW France, and want to find out what it's like living here during the winter. Or you want a few months of peace and quiet in the country to finish that novel, or get down to some serious painting of the countryside, villages and people.
Eller om ni är föräldralediga, varför inte undvika den svenska vintern och njuta av att bo i södra Frankrike några månader i stället?
Whatever your interests, if you rent for at least a month in the low season, we offer four weeks for the price of two, ie £800, for as many months as you like, plus the cost of utilities. Low season: end of October through to March.
From our guest book: “Thank you very much for a lovely relaxing time at Pepoulie. It really was just what we wanted - beautiful countryside, rural tranquility far from any tourist hordes, a taste of France, more than comfortable accommodation, hot weather (with the odd cooler interlude) and a lovely swimming pool. We all found the local history intriguing and enjoyed our visits to several of the nearby hill towns. But the main joy was being together in lovely surroundings far from the rush of life back at home. Thank you very much for your nicely judged hospitality, for the copious fruit and vegetables from the garden and for your care and attention to our needs… “ Quentin, Gillian, Jennifer, Eve and Robert, UK, August 2010...Read more

Beautiful farmhouse located within easy 10 min walk of the Puylaurens markets and centre, yet quiet, peaceful and alone on a hill top overlooking the stunning valley below. As New Zealanders we were after a place in which to sample some French countryside and culture without the hustle and bustle of staying near a busy city. Amazing to have large grounds for my kids to play football, cricket, climb trees, and explore in between jumping in and out of the pool. The owner Roger was very helpful and took great care to ensure we had everything we needed. Superb cycling and walking to be had in the area and many interesting adjacent towns to explore. It was a perfect holiday.
Stunning! The house, the view, the pool, the hosts

Imagine sitting at the back of the house eating breakfast with a breathtaking view or taking a swim in the fresh saltwater pool. The house is spacious with high standard and all facilites needed. Our hosts Ulla and Roger is another reason why we gladly will come back to Pépoulie

Spacious, simply decorated accommodation with a very fine pool in a particularly lovely setting. Roger was very helpful and welcoming. The unpretentious town of Puylaurens is a ten-minute walk up the hill and supplies all that you need while you can walk or cycle from the door into beautiful countryside. I thought drinkable rose at 1.2 euros a litre was a thing of the past until I visited the cave. The large saltwater pool is special.

A simple, delightful and well-equipped house, with stunning views and a great pool - a good size, and treated with salt water, which is much nicer than chlorine.
Roger and Ulla were extremely welcoming and friendly, and were on hand to help make our stay a complete pleasure.
We particularly loved the walks and bike rides from the house. The Saturday market at Revel was another highlight. Puylaurens is a pleasant walk up the hill for morning croissants and has all the shops and facilities we needed during our stay.

Great service by resident owners, including cooking a home made outdoor meal with local produce.Very clean facilities
Ideal gite for a young family with a safe pool.
Very quiet, rural location in non tourist area- ideal for using your French. Little English spoken (other than owners).
A warm salt, not chlorine pool, was loved by 3 and 5 year olds as well as older ones.
A signal booster would help reception of signal for I-Pad and mobile phones.
Relaxing with amazing views and really warm great swimming pool

Picturesque, tranquil, private, safe, enjoyable. The owners Roger & Ulla were very good. They left you have your own privacy and were great when we needed something. Great for the kids. The pool was the perfect temperature to allow to play in it all the time everyday.
The setting has amazing views and lots of sitting options around the place to allow to enjoy the wonder views of Roger and Ulla's beautifully kept gardens.
I don't usually leave reviews as most places come as expected. But between the location and Roger & Ulla's efforts, this very much worth one.

We were sceptic about going to a place so far from the ocean but that dissapeared the moment we arrived. We simply arrived to paradise. The view in all directions is amazing and the house is very well planned with all the fasilities you need. The saltwater pool is great. We didn´t miss the ocean a single time.
The owner Roger Budd is great! Very serviceminded and very friendly. He is also a very good chef.
We can strongly recommend this great place to families with children.

The welcome service of Roger Budd was exellent with possibilities to have food also for our childrens, 3,5 and 5,5 years old. Very discret and soft services and small nice talks with Roger who also had a complete knowledge of the region with all our questions from where to go to find wine caves to pizzas. The house had all what 3 families needed with 5 children from spoons to barbeque tools. The pool was a fantastic place to be at and very well used from durlng the week. The only thing that we missed a little was more parasolls at the pool and maybe a bigger barbeque.

We have just returned from a fabulous 2 weeks in this beautiful house in France. The location and setting of the farmhouse are perfect, with stunning countryside views and lots of gardens full of flowers and fruit trees but near a decent size town which has everything you'd need. The accom is spacious and comfortable with lots of family friendly equipment making travelling with little ones stress free. Good size swimming pool with lots of sun loungers, and lots of outside tables and chairs dotted in different locations perfect for alfresco dining! The owners Roger and Ulla were very welcoming and friendly and always available to answer any questions or provide local knowledge but also giving us space to settle in and make the place feel like home. We definitely hope to return!

This is a beautiful house with truly stunning views and a lovely garden. We enjoyed every minute of our week there. The house is well-appointed, clean and comfortable and the pool was a pleasure to use, with inflatables for the children and loungers for the adults. Our two children also appreciated the well stocked toy box. There was plenty of information about things to do in the area and we enjoyed several visits to amazingly beautiful ancient villages. We can also recommend the local restaurant where we enjoyed a delicious meal and the unbelievable view.
Check in was stress free and we found everything we needed for a comfortable holiday.

8 of us and one baby stayed at Pepoulie for one week at the end of august. We were all incredibly impressed with every aspect of the accommodation and are already planning on going back!
The house is clean, tidy and beautifully done up with minimalistic décor (nothing worse than too much fuss)! The bedrooms are spacious and all come with an electric fan which, due to the 40 degreee heat, came in very useful!
The house came with swimming towels and lots of spare bedding if needed.
The setting is tranquil and absolutely breathtakingly beautiful with gorgeous views and incredible sunsets. The pool was fantastic and we spent many happy hours lounging around on the wooden sun loungers and playing with the toys supplied in the outdoor storage unit.
The hosts were very welcoming and helped us out whenever we needed it - they made trips to the supermarket for us which meant we arrived to fresh food and also helped us out with directions when we needed. They were friendly and couldn't do enough to make us feel at home.
In the lead up to the stay Roger was fantastic - he helped us book a taxi for a wedding we were going to and sent us regular updates and photos of the beautiful gardens.
To summarise, an absolutely wonderful stay! We were all gutted to be leaving and can't wait to return! Thank you!

We were made to feel very welcome, and Roger did his utmost to make us feel at home.
The location was perfect to enjoy some late summer sun in quiet countryside with magnificent views. The gite is well stocked with things to do - bikes, pool toys for the children, board games, books etc.

We spent a week at Pepoulie this summer. A relaxing week in a most beautiful environment perfect for two families with small children. We had great expectations for our trip and it turned out to be even better. Easy to get there, nice pool, excellent service from the owner of the house and a nice and cool temperature in the house in spite of hot weather. The house has all you need to live a good life when you travel with children, or without. We have already decided to come back within a couple of years and can of course recommend all of you to do the same.

We stayed four weeks with our 3 year old, and baby of six months. The house and location was well over our expectations. Everything for children was provided for (high chairs, changing station, baby tub, stool, plastic cups/plates etc..) you literally don't have to bring anything with you if you don't want to. The kitchen had all necessary utensils. Living room/kitchen was very big with nice views. Master bedroom was huge with the best views of the village and room for many extra beds if needed. The mattress in the double bed was a bit on the hard side. The other two bedrooms were of good size with space for 2-3 beds and wardrobes. The bathroom was in nice condition with a sink and a shower + changing station for babies. Roger was very accommodating in providing anything that we needed help with. The pool area was great. It's fenced and even had a shower heated by the sun that we enjoyed. The pool itself is in great condition. The views from the house are truly spectacular. Most of the house is a homage to Ikea, so many things that I didn't know they even produced :-). We really preferred this instead of old dusty furniture and antiques. Families with children will love the gardens, as they provide so many things to discover with plants, vegetables and even a tree house with swing to enjoy. The village of Puylaurens is in no way swamped by tourists, so if you are after a true French countryside experience, this is the place for you. We recommend the market on Wednesdays, remarkable for a village of this size. There are three grocery stores and two bakeries, all of good quality (we really liked the bakery in the village). We also recommend Toulouse, a very nice city conveniently 45 minutes from Puylaurens. The towns and markets of Castres and Revel are also very highly recommended. Castres also had the closest big supermarket, Auchan.
You will definitely have a relaxing vacation staying here.
