Additional Location Information

Location

The small Architect’s House is situated in Pyrgos, a truly enchanting village, in the middle in the island, with easy access to the rest of the villages and the beaches. Pyrgos is built amphitheatrically on a hill that offers magnificent views of Santorini in all directions. On top of this hill you’ll be able to wander around the ruins of a Venetian castle called Kasteli. The Castle of Pyrgos has retained the mystic atmosphere of its era! Walking around its alleys, stopping by its churches and enjoying the breathtaking view is an experience that no visitor of Santorini should miss!

The village is composed of traditional houses built around the Venetian Castle and the small streets follow the shape of the hill. Climbing from the square up to the castle of Pyrgos, the stone houses crowd more densely together and the labyrinth of narrow vaulted lanes becomes more tortuous. The village has a lot of churches, around 33, but the most famous one is the Holy Monastery of Profitis Ilias, built at the highest point of the island with simply the most breathtaking view of the whole island and the volcano! It feels like being on a plane! You’ll be so overwhelmed you won’t believe your eyes!

Pyrgos is a lovely place, all year round. Yet, it is widely known for the splendid Easter celebrations. On the day before Palm Sunday, the whole place is fragrant with the scent of rosemary which is used to decorate the 17 meter cross. Then, on Good Friday, the whole island attends the procession of Epitaphios while the village is decked with tin lanterns and glows like a jewel in the night! It is such an astonishing spectacle that you will remember it forever!

Pyrgos is one of the most authentic villages on Santorini. There are exceptional folklore museums, such as ‘Santorini of the Past’, and wonderful small cafes, where you can have a chat with the local people, who are very hospitable. Also, you can taste authentic Greek flavors at the exceptional taverns in Pyrgos or savor traditional culinary perfections at one of the best gourmet restaurants on the island! Also, there is an extraordinary bakery, a mini market, a kiosk and a bus stop all within walking distance.
