The Cretan cuisine is one of the oldest and most delicious culinary traditions in the world, with a variety of delicious and aromatic delights. The secret of the Cretan diet is one hand to the rich variety of the products of the Cretan land and the other in olive oil, which is used in almost all dishes.

In general, seasonal food were consumed, which were products of the region. Fresh and dried fruits, legumes, vegetables, wild native grasses and herbs, unprocessed grains and nuts, which favored the cultivation of the region's climate, eaten in abundance and were the basis of the Cretan diet during this period.
Dairy products were consumed daily in low to moderate amounts. Poultry and fish consumed weekly also, in moderate amounts, while red meat consumed only a few times a month. The main source of fat was olive oil, which was used both in salads, and in the preparation of food, in contrast to northern European countries, which were consuming mainly animal fats.
Another key feature of the Cretan diet in 1960 was moderate alcohol consumption, mostly in the form of red wine that accompanied the meal. Finally, daily dessert were fresh fruit and a variety of traditional sweets based honey consumed a few times a week.
