Toucan Blue is a beautiful beach house located 20 km. east of the Roatan International airport, mid-island on the scenic north shore in Milton Bight. The Caribbean sea is just steps from the front door and the second largest barrier reef in the world is approximately 300 meters before you. Enjoy the serenity as you look out upon the sea and the never tiring view.
Roatan, one of the Bay Islands of Honduras, is included in the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz. For years, Roatan was known mainly to divers for the exquisite diving adventures around the barrier reef. The improved infrastructure on the island now brings growing tourism and cruise ship passengers. English is the main language of the island with Spanish widely spoken, and US currency is accepted.
Toucan Blue is perfect for divers, snorkelers, family, or friends. It is a single family home with main living areas and four private bedrooms so rates are flexible depending on the number of guests. You will have exclusive use of the home and the bedrooms not required will simply not be made up or accessible. The main living area and large deck are on the upper level so it may not be suitable for small children. Escape the tourist crowds for the solitude, peace, and tranquility of Toucan Blue.
There are only four other homes on the white sand peninsula that share the dock with Toucan Blue, with security on site. At the end of the dock is a thatched palapa, a great place for morning coffee at sunrise or beverages at sunset. From the palapa setting, both sunrise and sunset can be events.
The house is decorated in lively Caribbean colors and each room has ceiling fans and air conditioning, if needed. The bright, open main floor on the upper level includes the living area, full kitchen, dining, half bath, and huge deck. The large sapphire blue bedroom with bath/shower is also on the upper level with patio doors opening to the deck.
There are indoor/outdoor speakers for music while upstairs in the house or on the deck. There is DirectTV (basic plan) and DVD player for those times that you want to be indoors, and you can keep in touch with others using the wireless internet connection. There are games, puzzles, books, music and movies for your enjoyment.
The large, covered, ceramic tiled deck is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the tranquil setting and endless view. It is where you will likely spend most of your time while at the house. It is also a great place to laze in the hammocks, listen to the waves breaking over the reef, watch the hummingbirds at the feeder, or sit by the railing and gaze at the star filled sky at night. Shade sails have been added to help keep the deck cool by blocking some of the afternoon sun.
The patio table seats six with another table and chairs available for additional deck seating/dining. The BBQ grill is near the kitchen and deck. A local cook is available for a nominal fee if you are interested in having island meals prepared at the house.
The lower level includes the large emerald green bedroom with bath/shower, and the two other bedrooms that share a full bath with tub/shower. The laundry room has a full size washer and dryer. An outdoor shower is available to wash off the sand and salt before entering the home.
Enjoy the stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, paddle the sea inside the barrier reef in the two provided sea kayaks, stroll the white sand beach, view sea life from the dock, or gently swing in one of the hammocks on the deck.
For divers, a dive shop is located at nearby Turquoise Bay Resort. You may be able to make arrangements with them to rent snorkeling gear to use during your stay.
Toucan Blue was recognized in July 2011 by FlipKey and Travel Advisor for their "Rated Excellent" digital badge. "This exclusive award recognizes outstanding vacation rentals based on reviews from past guests."
The modern international airport welcomes direct flights from the US, with many more flights connecting through cities such as La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula on the mainland.
Our property managers will meet you upon arrival and escort you to the house, stopping at the supermarket on the way if you wish. They will familiarize you with Toucan Blue and surroundings, and will be available for any questions during your stay. There is a cell phone at the house for your use.
Island attractions include ziplines, golf at the new Black Pearl course designed by Pete Dye, and water sports of all kinds. Roatan is a diver's paradise, but you can also snorkel, swim with dolphins, kayak...or just relax.
Since Toucan Blue is located mid-island and away from the touristy areas of West Bay and West End, you will need to rent a vehicle to get around and to explore the island and we strongly recommend 4-wheel drive. We can provide a preferred car rental contact for you.

Toucan blue is off of the main road down a rough dirt road. The house is situated right on the beach just looks just like in the pictures. There are a few houses around toucan blue but it is still very private and remote feeling.
The house is very clean and has a very well stocked kitchen.
Be prepared that there is only a few restaurants in a 15 min driving distance. (Kal's cantina is great)
Toucan blue is very close (approx. 5 min drive) from Subway Water Sports at Turquoise Bay Resort if you are interested in snorkeling or diving. Subway is a top notch shop and you will have great experience with them.
One con with this property is that the water is very shallow and has a lot of grass so you can't really swim off of the beach. You could go down to the end of the dock to get in if you wanted.

The photo tells the true story -- on a gorgeous clean white sand beach, sitaboard kayaks that track true, hammocks on the breezy shady verandah, and bright sliding glass doors. All rooms are well-equipped with comfortable furniture and ceiling fans -- we never once turned on the a/c and it was hot in March. Everything was exactly as described in the listing, and Dave and Lynda (owners) were always accessible (by email) and ready to help when needed. Their 4WD which we also rented was perfect .. we drove down all kinds of rough roads during our explorations. The only thing they didn't have was a pair of binoculars -- bring your own -- there is always something happening on the water - local fishermen, conch-divers, dive boats, pelicans, terns, herons, egrets, and happy local children playing in the shallow water. The palapa (with benches and another hammock) was wonderful on extra-hot days, where we enjoyed morning coffee, afternoon cool-downs, and pre-supper wine. We rarely went out for meals -- did all our cooking in the kitchen and barbecue. We had a really great holiday, and a month was not too long.

Look, we are not fussy travelers. My husband has backpacked the world, we take the kids backpacking to the mountains in the summer, and we just don't require extreme luxury. With that said, I truly appreciate clean, well appointed lodging. This is that--you get it all without feeling like you will ruin the sofa by having sand on yoru feet. Having never been to Roatan, we chose to spend half the week in Sandy Bay near West End and the other half farther east at Toucan Blue in Milton Bight. The clear winner was Toucan Blue. I loved that the sleeping quarters are completely separate from the public living space. No one ever gets woken up by early risers. Ac in every room was appreciated. The shower was better than the shower at my home in the states. The location is peaceful, beautiful and away from it all. I enjoyed my experience on the far east end of the island better than the hustle of West End. It felt more remote and more like vacation, frankly. The option of having a car was necessary and very appreciated. Being next door to Turquoise Bay was convenient as well. My only complaint is the dining space inside is very crampt and a little akward. And, the sand fleas seem to be a little worse this side of the island. But, sand fleas are everywhere on this island. This home is a great pick, especially for larger groups or families. Enjoy!

Very nice situated beach house. Quiet location. The help is very kind. The seaweed was raked every morning to lesson the sandfly population. There was a constant breeze every night, which made sleeping very relaxing. Gorgeous views of the ocean. The crossing over the bridge at night was a challenge, but adventurous. The house was great. Only one suggestion to supply the house with sharp, sturdy knives for cutting.

I spent a considerable amount of time looking for an adventure my wife and I could safely share with our 3 athletic daughters. We didn't need to be pampered as we are accustomed to camping in the outdoors since the girls were babies. We were after something a little rustic, that was quiet and off the beaten track - The Toucan was perfect and the Toucan Team was super-terrific!
