Romantic Roman 2 Bedroom Penthouse Near Everything
Description from the owner
This is a wonderful, romantic Roman penthouse - conjured up in an ancient building in one of Rome's great piazzas by a top Roman architect. He played with the curves and created a tower penthouse jewel over Rome with a very large eat-out terrace and views of St. Peter's and the roofs of ancient Rome. It has that wow factor that only an ancient Roman place combined with modern interior design can give you.
It has two bedrooms. Plus a snug alcove which can be improvised as a third bedroom. One of the ensuite bathrooms has two entrances so it works fine.
From the master bedroom you have a view of one of the 7 hills of Rome - the very green Aventino (one of the more fashionable and upscale places to live in Rome). The master boasts a huge shower, a plasma TV, and original beamed ceilings.
The second bedroom can fit two beds or a double bed as you prefer. There's an ensuite bathroom with a decent shower and easy access to the roof top garden.
Other features offered by Mercanti:
* Full modern kitchen on the bottom floor
* Kitchenette with fridge, toaster, coffee machine etc on the roof top garden.
* Air conditioning & independent heating everywhere
* Huge eat-out, BBQ Terrace with great views of ancient Rome
* Guide available for to tell you about all the monuments you see from your roof!
* Plasma TVs
* Original Wood Rafter Ceilings
* Elevator to the top floor
* Beautifully elegant marble entrance
* View of the green Aventine hills from the master bedroom
* 2nd smaller double bedroom with queen bed (or a single) and own
* Washing machine
* Roman Cotto Floors
Piazza Mercanti is one of the most well-known piazza's in Rome - home of Taverna Mercanti, home to top Italian singer Venditi (he owns the building next door), and the very beautiful Cathedral of Santa Cecilia.
This is the quieter side of Trastevere. Windy cobble stone streets just as the Northern side of Rome's entertainment/ancient slave district, but there are no huge crowds here. Lots of pubs, restaurants etc within a minute walk but you'll have a quieter experience than at my other two places in Rome.
You will feel the very special nature of this place - it is an architect's jewel - overlooking the eternal city.
I offer 3 apartments in Rome - see my other listings. This one is new to airbnb as I just got it back from the long term tenant.
I have tried to put together lots of info for my guests and collected some activities run by friends& friends that I know are A+. From valet parking, to Italian cooking classes chez you, Yoga by a US certified instructor, catered breakfast with local ingredients on your terrace - ready for when you wake up, skip-the-queue Vatican tours, etc. When you book, I send you an informal list of tips about Rome and your planning info. I like to think you are making your vacation better/easier by coming to stay with us.
ATTENTION: Be SURE to talk to us by phone call and positively identify us before paying a deposit. Juergen speaks English, Spanish and is of German mother-tongue , and Martin speaks French, Spanish, Italian and his mother tongue is American English with a US accent.

Additional Location Information
Piazza dei Mercanti is one of the most charming Piazza's in Rome though it's charm, frankly is diminished by the fact that cars are allowed to park there. There is a historic restaurant - still using illumination by flaming torches on it's facade - that makes an awesome sight and there's the most beautiful courtyard church you'll ever see, right below the apartment. The piazza is very well known in Rome and is considered a very up market address -- whilst still being in the culture and entertainment district of Rome. We are surrounded by small cobblestone streets with restaurants and artisan workshops.

Our stay at Casa Picard's Piazza Mercanti apartment was a wonderful change of pace during our 3 1/3 week trip through Italy. We loved the quiet neighborhood, the ability to cook for ourselves, the wonderful roof terrace and views. WiFi worked well. The location is convenient to much of the sites on the other side of the river. We walked to most places. Most of the restaurants are on the other side of the main street in Trestevere, Viale de Trestevere, but again it was in easy walking distance. We greatly appreciated the great service Martin & sister Elizabeth offered while booking the apartment, the Wiki guide they put together, the fridge stocking before our arrival and all of the follow up through out our stay. Team Picard are great to work with.
That said, we did have a few issues during our stay. There was not enough hot water for 4 people to shower, not enough towels (more were provided after our request), issues with the master bath shower drain, and the much needed washer did not work. (Martin kindly covered our cost to pay for the laundry service). The apartment was clean, but showed some signs of wear. The kitchen was well stocked. Knowing the level of service that Team Picard offers, I am very confident the issues we shared with them will be dealt with.
"Wonderfully located and beautiful apartment with stunning roofto"

Every aspect of our reservation, arrival and stay was dealt with very attentively by Martin and his team, who were on hand whenever we needed assistance, without ever being intrusive. There was a driver to meet us at Fiumicino, and a fridge stocked with goodies on arrival at the apartment - and what a lovely apartment, in the heart of the quieter half of Trastevere, but surrounded by outstandingly good restaurants and glorious faded elegance. Santa Cecilia is right next door, and jaw-droppingly beautiful, especially at night. There are lovely views from every window of the apartment and, especially, from the roof terrace, which looks out over Santa Cecilia to St Peter's in one direction, and over the umbrella pines of the aventine Hill in the other. What an amazing place for a lazy late breakfast, and to watch the sun go down. The apartment provided everything the four of us needed for the week, and we were not short of good recommendations for restaurants, bars, pizzerie and so on via Martin's wiki guide to the area. It took us no time at all to feel totally at home; our only regret was that the week sped by so quickly. We'll surely be back soon.

This is the 2nd time we've stayed in one of Martin's apartments and as before, we found that everything (service & apartment) was perfect. Martin & his team are as proactive as you want them to be & I'd recommend "Team Picard" without hesitation. The view from the roof terrace is stunning and the white interiors cool and peaceful(even in the serious Roman heatwave happening while we stayed!) Mercanti is in a quieter area of Trastevere, which we just didn't manage to get to explore fully...we need to go back to shop in the vintage clothes shop, the organic food shop and other small artisan shops, but it's also easy to get to the major sites - tho a bit further perhaps than you'd be if you stayed in one of the Renella apartments.We also want to return to be able to cook in the kitchen on the roof and to cosy up at the open fire in the open-plan kitchen/sitting room as we just didn't get the chance this time! Mille grazie!

We stayed at Casa Picard early august with our 2 kids, 11 and 13. We had always stayed in hotels when in Rome but decided to take an apartment this time. It was good move. No noisy traffic, no banging doors, no having to get up for breakfast. This place was perfect and spacious and suited all our needs. Its close to great restaurants and only a short taxi ride to city center. Cannot recommend enough and we will most certainly stay again. Martin and his family cannot do enough to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. If you are in any doubt dont be, this is the place to be!

Myself and three other ladies traveled to Europe for a month and Rome was one of our stops. I booked the penthouse months in advanced and worked with Martin the whole time. Before Rome we were in Marseille France so our travel day to get there was horrifying. Walking into this apartment after the day we had was more than a sigh of relief. Martin, the owner of this gem had givin me contacts once I got to Rome so we had to call them and let us know we had arrived. Since our trains were all late the original arrival time we had givin them was way off so we didn't arrive to the penthouse until midnight and it was perfectly fine. No hassle was givin to us, just smiles at the door. We were greeted By a wonderful couple, who then gave us a tour of our new home for the next few days. They took their time and showed us everything we needed to know about Casa Picard, how to use the shower, how to use the air conditioner, and answered any questions we had. They pointed out the best restaurants for pizza, pasta, and coffee, and then walked us up to the terrace where candles were lit for us at a table to enjoy a glass of wine Martin had left for us upon arrival. The area where the penthouse is located is so perfect and charming. Everyone is so nice and welcoming. The only bad thing was we wished we stayed longer. Martin also contacted his sister Elizabeth and she emailed me many times to make sure we were okay and gave lists in detail of gyms, restaurants, shopping, places we should see and tips just on how to live there on our venture. I would suggest to anyone to stay here, not only because the apartment is so beautiful, cozy and decorated to perfection because the people behind all of it embrace u like family and wan you to experience their home county like they do. I can never thank them enough and I do truly feel like we made a some friends not just some company on the other end of an email.
"Everything about this apartment was conducive with a great vacat"

We initially passed up the opportunity to stay here as the precise dates we needed were unavailable. Our 2nd choice was an expensive disaster and we needed to rescue our vacation. Around midnight the owner of Mercanti returned our distress calls and a few hours later we checked in.
We got the distinct impression that a large proportion of accommodations in Rome is barely adequate from functionality and comfort perspectives. This may be fine and OK for many people who don't mind things broken or barely working (air-con, lights, appliances, etc.) If I spend hundreds of Euros per night on accommodation, I have certain basic expectations, and Mercanti met and surpassed them.
Great location for visiting the great sites of Rome and great for relaxation at the end of a long day walking in the heat. Martin Picard could not be a more helpful host, constantly empathising with our needs and interests. I strongly recommend this apartment and wil not hesitate to stay here again if visiting Rome, which I hope I will again soon. Read more
Just for the record, John Coyle was a true gentleman to deal with and I couldn't recommend him more highly to any host around the world. It's guest such as John that make renting out a high end apartment more fun than work.
For guests of disappointing apartments in Rome, we'll try to salvage your vacation - the Eternal City deserved people to have experiences as magnificent as its history. www.romanloft.com

"A perfect view to Rome"

We, a family of six, stayed in the Mercanti penthouse during 10 days in april / May 2012. We really enjoyed the spacious and characteristic penthouse with 2 bathrooms and the wonderfull roof terrace with a great view to Rome in the more quiet part of Trastevere. The medieval church of Santa Cecicilia is at your doorstep and also many restaurants, shops and espresso bars. The service of Martin and his team is great, inculding a web-based insight guide to Rome. The Forum Romanum is within walking distance.
We had a super time thanks to this penthouse !

The penthouse was everything a travelling family could ever want. It was spacious enough to allow for individual time and group activities. All the amenities were great and everything worked as advertised.
The location of the apartment is just fantastic. The restaurants and activities are so close by that you don't mind being on the other side of the river from the historic areas. We spent every morning in a different coffee shop enjoying the cappuccinos and café au laits.
The owner's attention to your stay is unbeatable. He arranged for the taxi to and from the airport and made certain we knew which restaurants were great for families. This attention to service made our stay in Rome a memory to treasure forever.
Shhh! We don't want to let the secret out.

We just returned from our trip to Rome where we visited our son who is studying at the american University of Rome. When we travel for pleasure, we really enjoy the space, convenience and special nature of staying in a home or apartment. From the moment I reviewed the web posting, the descriptions, the photos and the reviews, I was impressed. My initial positive impressions were totally reinforced once we arrived. The apartment is everything described and more. Top quality all the way and extremely comfortable. Martin is the ultimate host...he went out of his way to make this experience as enjoyable and easy as possible. His sister Elizabeth lives in Rome and couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. From the moment we arrived at FCO at 7:00am, the driver was waiting for us and took us directly to the apartment - there were no hassles about early check-in and antonello was waiting for us when we arrived to show us the place. There was also a very nice "welcome" bottle of wine awaiting us. The Master bedroom and bathroom were extremely comfortable with great white cotton linens and down comforters. Our son stayed on the pullout sofa in the TV room and our daughter stayed in the second bedroom...very comfortable for both. The ultimate pleasure was the rooftop terrace where we had breakfast every day and we enjoyed the views and a glass of wine or two each evening. We also hosted our son and his friends for dinner one night - dinner for 18 on the rooftop terrace - with lots of room, plenty of white dinnerware and glassware and terrific views. I would highly recommend Martin for any place he represents, but we absolutely loved this penthouse apartment in a very quaint, safe and beautiful area of Rome with many restaurants and close proximity to the tram. Wonderful time!

If you like unique experiences, views, food, and closeness to sights this is quite ideal. Our host, Martin, was very engaging, helpful, and committed to our comfort and to enhancing our experience. It is close to all we wanted to do and see, walked everywhere. All of us agreed terrific time and experience I have stayed at Ritz Carltons, Four Seasons, etc. you get a canned experience, very nice but predictable and canned.. This experience is one you can remember. Not as elegant as a Ritz but comfortable and memorable . I would return.

The title of this listing is absolutely true. The penthouse apartment is quite charming...split over several levels leading up to the roof terrace with fantastic views over Rome. You can see the dome of St. Peter's Basilica (Vatican) as well as the Vittorio Emmanuel II Monument. The apartment is within walking distance of all the key sites to see in Rome...and several fantastic restaurants quite literally around the corner (such as San Michele). The bedrooms and bathrooms are comfortable and spacious, with good water pressure in the showers. The kitchen is well stocked will all the needed applicances, dishes, etc. And the host, Martin, is incredibly helpful and responsive...an absolute to pleasure to work with. We highly recommend this apartment for a family of four...anytime of the year! (we were there during the first week of January...it was warm and cozy even on the cold, rainy days)
