Additional Location Information

The apartment is in the heart of San Lorenzo district situated between the Aurelian Walls at Porta Tiburtina, and the monumental cemetery of Verano, crossed by the initial stretch of Via Tiburtina. It owes its name to the nearby basilica of San Lorenzo outside the walls. From San Lorenzo, the ancient center of Rome is easily accessible by public transport or by walking.

The birth of the area dates back to the period between 1884 and 1888, where, before its construction, there were essentially agricultural landscapes.
The purpose of its construction was the development of housing for the workers who arrived in Rome at the end of the nineteenth century to support the development of the city at the turn of the century. The first inhabitants are indeed railwaymen, workers and artisans. Hence the popular nature of the neighborhood, which is reflected in the specific types of houses.

In 1909, the San Lorenzo district enters into the plan of the municipality of Rome immediately assuming the characteristics of a popular area. It was the only district in which they tried to stop the fascist “March on Rome”, so that from there came the fame of "Red District" along with other historic neighborhoods of the capital such as Testaccio.
In July 1943, during World War II, was the area hardest hit by the first bombing of Rome by the allies, with the aim of destroying the german freight stationwhich is still active today, along with Tiburtino, the Prenestino, the Casilino to Labicano and the Tuscolano. The 4,000 bombs (about 1,060 tons) dropped on the city, caused about 3,000 deaths and 11,000 wounded.

San Lorenzo plays a key role in the years of student protests (1968) as it is home of Lotta Continua and epicenter of the activities of extra-parliamentary left.
Today, San Lorenzo is a district frequented by students from nearby University of Rome "La Sapienza", with numerous pubs, restaurants, pubs and cultural associations, gradually losing the character genuinely popular that it had taken from its rise to the postwar period. But more than anything is a neighborhood that is home to artists, artisans, writers and intellectuals, as well as known members of the world cinema, culture and art.
