The apartment in the Oltrarno district in Florence’s historic city. The name “Oltrarno” literally means “beyond the Arno” and this district which stretches along the south bank of the river represents a different facet of Florence to that which is found near the Duomo. The Oltrarno perhaps displays the true character of Florence and in general is slightly quieter, greener and more relaxed than the other districts of Florence. Indeed many tourists tend to choose the Oltrarno for this reason. Traditionally an artisans’ quarter, the Oltrarno still boasts today many lovely antique shops and artisans’ studios (particularly furniture and leather-workers) and Via Maggio remains the focus of Florence’s thriving antiques trade.
Over time the Oltrarno became a rather chic area and many aristocrats chose this neighbourhood to build their villas and palaces, the largest of these being the Pitti Palace, which became the home of the various Grand Dukes. Today this sumptuous palace houses several important museums which rank amongst the best in Florence. Other major sights the Oltrarno has to offer are the Cappella Brancacci with the fabulous frescoes of Masaccio, Piazzale Michelangelo with its breath-taking views over Florence, the magnificent church of San Miniato, (one of the highest points in the city of Florence and also one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture within Tuscany) together with the most famous and oldest bridge in Florence, Ponte Vecchio, home to a glittering array of jewellery shops and goldsmiths.
Extending up the hill from the Pitti Palace are the formal Boboli Gardens, an outdoor museum of garden sculpture that includes Roman antiquities as well as 16th and 17th century works. The Oltrarno is famous for its wine bars such as Olio & Convivium, authentic trattorias serving typical Tuscan cuisine, including Il Santo Bevitore, I 4 Leoni and Il Magazzino, not to mention the wonderful fresh produce market held every morning in Piazza Santo Spirito. For those choosing an apartment in this area the Oltrarno quarter also offers a choice of grocery stores, patisserie, bakeries, gift shops and much more.
Florence city centre is a ZTL zone which means a “limited traffic zone” and therefore special rules apply to when you can enter this area. This particular apartment is in fact located within the ZTL zone so this means that if you are thinking of coming to Florence by car and wish to drive around and park, then you will need to pay special attention to the road signs, CCTV cameras and access cameras (they will show either a red/green light) in order to avoid receiving fines. Guests who need to travel within the ZTL zone by car to reach their apartment are advised to contact one of the private garages in the centre (the one nearest the apartment you are staying in) and obtain a temporary access permit. Upon arrival at the garage, guests must specify they need access for the ZTL and the garage will then note the vehicle’s number plate and forward it to the appropriate police headquarters.

We were in Florence for a week to get married. We rented this apartment because of its proximity to our vendors and venue. We were not disappointed. The apartment was well decorated and very modern with all of the items you would need for a short (or long stay) in Florence. It was conveniently located on Borgo San Jacopo, just steps away from the Ponte Vecchio, the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens and the main tourist areas. A grocery store, restaurants and shopping were just a short walk away. We really enjoyed it. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because Borgo San Jacopo is a busy one way street with cars and motorcycles whizzing down the road beginning very early in the morning. The lovely picture window has little if any insulation and the cars sound like they are right at the window. We are sound sleepers but it was quite loud. All in all, we really had a lovely time. The wedding went off without a hitch!
We would definitely rent with Windows on Italy again (this was our 2nd time). Their customer service is exceptional (a big hello to alessandro who helped us again on this visit) and professional. They have such a variety of apartments that we look forward to experiencing another part of our Florence on our next visit.
Thank you for your lovely review. We are glad to know that you spent a good time at the Duccio Suite apartment. Actually some areas in the center of Florence are not the quitest ones, like the one where Duccio Suite is, but with so many lovely apartments in Florence if you were ever to return I am sure we could find you a quiter alternative. We look forward to welcoming you back to Florence in the very near future.

“Great Building and Location in Florence, but needs minor updates”
Left on 09/09/2013 for a stay in May 2013 | LoveFlorenceReviewed Sep 9, 2013Stayed May 2013
This unit was wonderful for two or three people, the location is the best in Florence in a Fabulous Building. Near numerous restaurants and shops. The only issue with this unit and the lighting in the Bedroom - it is almost nonexistence. We notified the agency but this problem was never resolved. Also, the living area need additional sitting and some additional storage if someone is staying downstairs in the sofa bed. If the owners resolve these minor issues, it would be a perfect unit. The cable provided is very limited with no English channels.
Thank you for your detailed review. We hope that you had a good time at the Duccio Suite apartment. Thank you for mentioning these issues with the apartment. I will make sure someone looks into it immediatly. All the necessaries improvments will be made for future guests. We look forward to welcoming you back to Florence in the very near future.

Absolutely amazing place to stay. The Duccio suite apartment is modern, comfortable and within such close distance to all you need. Ponto Vecchio a short walk & Duomo not much further. Supermarket right down the street. Check-in & check-out was absolutely seamless, you just ring the number of the 'keykeeper' when you arrive in Florence & he meets you at the apartment & he arrived back on the dot precisely at 11am for our pre-arranged check-out time. He also gave us plenty of info on the surrounding area & local customs. Windows on Florence reception also amazing, email you just to make sure everything went ok. Plenty of info in booklet in the apartment for restaurants, cafes, pools, laundromattes, Internet cafes, I also got a proposal from my (now) fiancée) while dining at Borgo San Jacopo Reseaurant (very good food!) so I guess it's extra special for me. But I certainly can't rave about this apartment & the service from Windows on Italy enough. Highly recommend!!
We are really glad that everything was OK, it is our mission.

Great apartment for one person. If you don't mind stairs up to bedroom & bath, you will be happy. Loved the location and neighborhood. Even though it was only one floor above the street, it was quiet. Excellent wifi connections all of the time. Wonderful restaurants on this street.
Thanks Nancy, we hope to hear from you again soon. Anna - Windows on Italy
