Additional Location Information

Russell is situated in the beautiful Bay of Islands in the North Island of New Zealand. There are 140 islands in the Bay of Islands and dolphins are almost always seen on boat charters. It is easy to get to Russell. Driving for about 3 and a half hours north of Auckland on the main highway No 1, then turn at Kawakawa to Russell. This is very well signed, Hightway 51. At Opua, take the car ferry. This operates from 7am until 10pm every day. The trip takes about 5 minutes. From there it is about 10 kms to Russell. By air, Kerikeri airport is about 30 minutes away with rental car facilities and a shuttle bus that goes to Paihia. From there you can drive to the car ferry, or if on a shuttle bus, catch the foot ferry across the Bay to Russell. We will meet you at the ferry.
Russell was the original capital of New Zealand and is known fondly as the "Hellhole of the Pacific" from the time in the 1840's when whalers and locals fought and drank well together. Today, it is a tourist town, and beautifully presented.
