Additional Location Information

The quiet country surroundings allow you the atmosphere to kick back and enjoy the peace, tranquility, and absolute beauty of Northern Maine. There’s something special about life in Maine. Come and relax and understand why they say, "Maine-the way life should be."

Countryside Retreat is located 2 miles from beautiful Long Lake, which is the deepest of the Fish River chain of lakes and covers 6,000 acres with a maximum water depth of 163 feet. Within minutes, guests may enjoy swimming, boating, kayaking, and fishing.

As Northern Maine warms to beautiful summer days and comfortable summer nights, outdoor vacation opportunities abound. Visitors may enjoy extensive all terrain vehicle trails, hiking and bicycling trails, as well as excellent swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, golfing, and camping. Some build a vacation around one of Northern Maine's famous festivities, like the Acadian Festival in August.

Summer activities continue into fall with picturesque foliage providing a back drop of color. The breathtaking array of color attracts tourists as they take long leisurely walks or drives in order to appreciate the brilliance of Mother Nature.

The average seasonal snowfall is 120 inches and makes Northern Maine one of the East Coast's best winter wonderlands. Northern Maine offers plenty of outstanding recreation for downhill and cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating, ice fishing, and snowmobiling. The snowmobiling trail system is rated #1 in New England. More than 2,300 miles of well-groomed trails link to the Interconnecting Trail System. ( ITS ) Enjoy snowmobiling on hundreds of miles of groomed trails with groomed access to ITS 81, thanks to the Madawaska Snowmobile Club. Winter festivities include the Long Lake Fishing Derby in January, Can-Am Sled Dog Races in March, and National and International events at Tenth Mountain Ski Center in Fort Kent.

As the days grow longer and the snow melts, sap begins to run in the maple trees, and syrup producers fire up their sugar shacks to create their tasty treats. After the harsh winter, it only seems appropriate to spend a day in the sun and celebrate the arrival of spring. Maine Maple Sunday is no exception. More than twenty five years after the first Maine Maple Sunday, people have not lost their passion for visiting local sugarhouses.

The St. John Valley, located at the northern tip of the State, borders the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick, Canada. This beautiful river valley is home to many bilingual Francophones who are proud of their French Acadian heritage and still celebrate their culture through their language, unique foods, and wonderful festivals. It's one of the last places in the United States where French is spoken on the street which is part of the charm, culture, and history of the area.
