Additional Location Information

St Hilaire de Riez Church: Guided tours with a commentary recounting its history from its original construction in 1025, taking in religious wars, restoration in the 17th century and the works of local artist Henry Simon which were commissioned in the 1980s. Open to the public 10h to 18h in July and August with free guided tours on Tuesdays at 10h45. For more information, consult the Tourist Office.

Salt Marshes of La Vie: In the Valley of La Vie, you will find living history. For a number of years the salt marshes had fallen into disuse and the salt, often referred to as white gold was no longer harvested. The Salt works of Le Recoin and the Marais de l?Etoile marsh have been reinstated to preserve a remarkable natural feature. You can visit the salt marshes, see how it is harvested and buy the produce. Accessible from the RD38Bis ? the fast road from St Hilaire to St Gilles.
La Bourrine du Bois Juquaud: A magnificent example of a typical earth and reed house, built using earth from the marshes which surround it. The cottage itself and several outbuildings have been restored to their original state and a visitor centre with photographs and video give a great insight into the life of Vendeen marshdwellers in days gone by.
