Additional Location Information

Ribérac is surrounded by lovely villages, many with Romanesque churches, set in rolling countryside. Most of these villages have their own annual fete, often lasting several days, with events for all the family, and usually ending with a firework display. This is a mainly rural area, famed for its gastronomic produce, such as snails, truffles, foie gras, walnuts, ducks and geese, and cheeses. It is also close to the wine producing areas of Bergerac, Saint-Emilion and Bordeaux. There is a wonderful leisure lake nearby at La Jemaye with a man-made sandy beach, a safe swimming area, bird-watching, fishing, canoeing and play areas for children. There are also river beaches and canoeing at nearby Aubeterre and Saint-Aulaye.

Historic towns such as Périgueux, Brantome, Bergerac, and Sarlat are all within easy reach. The area towards and around Sarlat is well known for its troglodyte dwellings and caves with prehistoric drawings and paintings, the most famous of these being Lascaux. Bordeaux itself is about one and a half hours drive away, and in a couple of hours you can easily get to the Atlantic coast which is great for surfing, body-boarding, kite-flying or just relaxing on the beach. This area also has some large coastal lakes that are superb for activities such as sailing, windsurfing, and paragliding.
