“The good, the bad and how little things mean a lot”
Left on 12/25/2014 for a stay in November 2014 | A FlipKey verified reviewerReviewed Dec 25, 2014Stayed Nov 2014
We are a 60 something couple who have travelled extensively in North America, Europe, The South Pacific and now South and central America. We have used rental sites like VRBO, Homeaway and Flipkey for a majority of these travels and stay for extended periods of time in most of these rentals. We rely on traveller's reviews in making our choices, We are also a couple who likes to cook, enjoys a bottle of wine with dinner and frankly could not afford to travel as much as we do if we ate out in restaurants every night.
The condo at Vista Marina is just as it appears in the protos. it is spacious, well decorated and does have a wonderful view of the whole Salinas beach area. There is beach access steps from the front door and the staff in the lobby are great fellows who are very willing to help out with any issues you have.
We arrived on a holiday weekend and it was a busy time. Although the property is on the "quiet" end of the Malicon it is still abuzz with traffic on it's way to the party spot further along the beach so be prepared for traffic noise because you definitely want to have the large windows open to enjoy the fresh air and surf sounds.
When we arrived we were met by the property managers who showed us the layout and presented us with a list of information from the owners. We settled in and then sat down and went through the information which is often provided by VRBO/Flipkey owners to acquaint you with the property and the surrounding neighbourhood. It usually includes places to dine, supermarkets, transportations options, entertainment venues, etc. Here is where the "not so good" part of this review begins. There was a very extensive list of do's and do nots about the property which were listed in graphic detail. This was all done, I am sure, with good intentions but to be truthful was quite insulting in many aspects. This property is not on the cheap end of the scale so the owners are getting a fair nightly price for the rental. Included in the instructions were that the renter must replenish things like hand soap, without throwing out the dispensers, bar soap, tin foil, light bulbs, etc, etc, etc. There was an item by item list of everything in the unit that included everything from waste paper baskets to every knife in the drawer and instructions to check the list and make sure everything was there because if, when you leave, something is missing you must pay for it.
As mentioned we have done this for a long time, we have never, ever encountered anything like is before. When we read the list our first reaction was well this is no big deal, we would never take anything from a property, we leave things in an orderly fashion, and if anything broke "on our watch" we would replace it. However as we encountered issues in our first few hours which included difficulties using the Tv because of instructions which were less than clear, discovering that the stove did not work because there was no gas supply and having to get the staff in the condo to fix it for us, realizing that in order to cook our meals we would be challenged because the pots and pans consisted of frying pans, a slow cooker and pressure cooker with only a couple of pots and one small baking pan, and no hot water to wash our dishes after supper, we started to get a bit miffed about the rules and regulations. The next morning we had only enough water pressure in the master bath for 1 person. Fortunately there are other bathrooms so we found another that had water pressure and if you need a hair dryer bring it with you because there is none in the unit. As we expressed to the property manager based on the Rules we were afraid to even touch the new granite counter tops for fear of making a mark on them and being charged for damages.
We were only two people so the condo was very adequate for our needs and then some. However as it is a 3 bedroom unit we did wonder what it would be like to have 6 people staying there. The dining room is great with 8 chairs and lots of room for a dinner party. The living room/TV room would be a very big challenge because the seating is restricted to a corner couch with no other seating available unless you bring over the dining room chairs which are fine but not very comfortable for watching TV, reading, etc.
There is no balcony in this unit but really that is not an issue as there are sliding doors that open up the front of the unit to the outdoors. We opened them when we arrived and for two weeks they were open 24/7 with a wonderful breeze, no bugs and no rain for the entire stay. We enjoyed that aspect of the unit. The down side of this is the location which is on the non-beach side of the Malecon which means that there is considerable traffic noise plus lots and lots of barking dogs who seem to enjoy making their presence felt 24/7. We got used to it but we were there in the off season so traffic was very reduced and party time was also reduced. We shudder to think what this would be like in high season when Salinas is a happening place.
If we were ever to return, not too likely because we just found there was not enough to do on a daily basis, we would definitely check out the locations on the beach just up the way which seems to be nicer and probably quieter because many of the condos are on the beach side of the Malecon.
Although the previous review is mostly positive there are some points that we would like to respond to.
According to our property manager, before the couple was given the key to our condo or ever entered the condo or our building, they expressed unhappiness about being in Salinas. We assume this was for personal reasons, because most people love a beach resort like Salinas with all the beach, boating, jet skiing, shopping, dining and tourist attractions nearby like Choclatera and La Loberia to visit. While this couple wrote about how much they liked the condo and the view…… they also mentioned they were unlikely to return to Salinas, saying there wasn’t enough to do and brought up a few points about our condo:
a. Pots and Pans. They commented that were not enough pots and pans for their needs. We provide a full compliment of pots, pans and everything else needed for a turnkey condo. Most people who come to a beach resort like Salinas, enjoy going out for the great food and inexpensive prices at the restaurants along the Malecon. One can have a steak dinner for $4.00, so most visitors do not do a lot of cooking when they come. However, the pots and pans that we have in our condo come from a suggested list prepared and approved by our property manager, who manages over a 100 properties in Salinas, and so this couple would not find more pots and pans in another rental. More importantly, at no time prior to the rental did they make it known to us that they had special requirements, because we would have been happy to try and accomodate them.
b. In the review, they mentioned that the sofa is in a corner and not adequate for a large number of people. Our sofa is positioned to capture the maximum ocean view. It’s an “L” shaped leather sofa and can seat 6 people. Most sofas in Ecuador seat 3 or 4 people, so ours is considerably larger. There are also 8 dining room chairs with upholstered seats that are very comfortable that can easily be moved to accommodate more people in the TV watching area. If you read the other reviews of our condo you will find that other people rated it with “5” stars.
c. This review also pointed out that there was a check list of items for the condo which they found insulting. In any time share or rental condo that my wife and I have every stayed in, anywhere in the world, there is always a check list. This is for the renter’s protection to ensure that everything is in the condo that is supposed to be in the condo and it also informs us as owners if something is missing that we need to replace. It only takes a few minutes to go through the checklist. All other properties managed by our property manager have a check list.
d. In the review they also pointed out that they were required to refill the soap dispensers before leaving which is a misunderstanding on their part and not the case. We provide full soap dispensers in the kitchen and all bathrooms for our guests. If they use up more than the full dispenser during their stay, they are responsible to either buy or refill the dispensers at their expense for their own use for the remainder of their stay. This is standard in any rental. We only ask that they leave the empty dispenser at the end of the rental so that we can refill it for the next guest.
e. In the review they also wrote that they found the Malecon where we are located noisy. Actually, it’s quite the opposite. We are at the quiet end of the Malecon , 5 buildings from the Miramar Barcelo Hotel, the only 4.5 star hotel on the beach and at least a five minute walk from where the more active area of the Malecon and at least 10 minutes from the main part of the Malecon. There is not a quieter area on the Malecon. During the week the Malecon is quiet, but on the weekend when everyone comes to the beach…. the Malecon is more active. Like I said, my wife and I are there for 3 months. We always have all the windows and sliders wide open 24/7 and mostly what we hear is the sound of the waves crashing across the street on the beach. However, this is a main beach Malecon even though our building is on the quieter end. And if one wants complete quiet …. then they really have to go out in the countryside. All the condo buildings on the Malecon are across from the beach.
f. In the review they also made mention that the propane tank required refilling. The propane tanks in our building don’t have gauges. So one doesn’t know when they might run out of propane. However, when then do, our building staff replaces them in 5 minutes and it is fully paid for by us.
g. In the review they also wrote about the instructions for the TV. The instructions are provided for the TV and DVD so guests who may be unfamiliar with TV’s and DVD’s can follow the directions for use …. as the TV setup in our condo might be different than what they are accustomed to in their home. The instructions are easy and straight forward. If the instructions were not clear for this couple …we would have appreciated suggestions of how to make them better or clearer for future guests. So far the instructions have been used by many guests prior to these guests without a problem, however we will review them to ensure ease of use.
g. There was mention in the review of a lack of hot water and hot water pressure. When this was looked into by the building staff they found that the breaker to the hot water tank was turned off and that’s why there was low pressure and no hot water. It was corrected by turning the breaker back on. Our property managers do not touch the breaker to the hot water tank so we do not know how this occurred. We have never experienced, nor has any prior guest had any problem with hot water or pressure in the condo.
h. My wife and I are aware that this couple was not happy in Salinas and not likely to return, for whatever reasons, which might be the basis for their comments both about our condo and Salinas. Up until this review we had a full five star rating by our guests, so I think any potential renter has to take that into account. In addition, our property management which manages over 100 properties along the Salinas coast, considers our condo in the top two nicest condos they manage.
“Spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean”
Left on 06/26/2013 for a stay in June 2013 | Theresa RoseReviewed Jun 26, 2013Stayed Jun 2013
This condo was everything it said it was and more. The owners were very nice & easy to deal with (payment, date changes due to flight cancellation, deposits, etc.)I was able to talk directly with them and ask my typical tourist questions & they even emailed me a lot of helpful information about Salinas and the surrounding areas. As soon as we walked in we felt right at home. It was very spacious, clean, modern furniture & appliances etc. The first thing we saw when we walked in the condo was the spectacular view we had of the ocean!! That sealed the deal for us.
The location was on the quiet end of the malecon, which we appreciated, yet walking distance to shops, restaurants & bars. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this place for your next get-a-way. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks Myra for all your help and sharing your beautiful condo with us. Maybe one day I will see you in Salinas on the Malecon. Chow
It has been wonderful meeting you since your stay at our condo in Salinas. So happy that you felt right at home in our condo. It was a pleasure to help you and getting to know you since your initial stay.

“Spacious upscale condo, incredible views”

Just as advertised, this is a very spacious condo with quality furniture and appliances. The panoramic views of the ocean are stunning. Condo is located in the most upscale section of San Lorenzo on the quiet end of the malecon but 5 minutes walk from all the restaurants and stores. English speaking property manager made it easy. Loved it and will come back.
