The historical Complex of Villa Darmene is located along the way from Spoleto to Montefalco, perched up on a hill and surrounded by olive trees, with a 360 degree outlook to the horizon. It is one of the the most remarkable examples of elegant countryside residences in Spoleto and in the entire Umbria region. All architectural elements are, so to speak, limbs of a body whose style and character - extending to other complementary functions and uses - give the whole structure unity in purpose and artistic value.
After the 1990s, careful and important restoration works took place and were finally completed only very recently. The structure of the major part of the complex was reinforced and improved using period materials and anti-seismic devices. In agreement with the Fine Arts Superintendency of the Umbria Region, a large part of the Villa's original plan was reinstated in order to preserve the architectural unity. Most of the decorations were also restored. All renovated sections are now attractively arranged, with all the amenities for comfortable modern living.
Around the villa, the same architect designed a large park, nowadays a national monument too. Centenary hedges, secular trees, two vast symmetrical Gazebos in wrought iron made as rose garden, a large elliptic esplanade in front of the facade encircled by two-wall exedrae which open to two opposite “belvedere” with panoramic views of the countryside leading towards the valley.
At the back of the main building stands the villa's private chapel and on the south side a neoclassical “secret garden” with architectonic elements such as walls, stairs, a fountain, a small temple and a meridian.
On the south/west edge of the hill, facing Spoleto, surrounded by olive groves, a large, sun drenched swimming pool (7,5x14,5mts open from mid May to the end of September) has been built.
A beautiful straight avenue flanked by majestic oaks and holm-oaks leads to a huge 2000 square mt Park, where nature, landscape and architecture contribute to create a balanced and harmonious composition. In the arrangement of the buildings, the plan shows a deliberately geometrical and symmetrical character respectful of the traditional Italian "garden style". Throughout the entire park, following the contours of the land (in accordance with the theories of the best English naturalists), century old boxwoods mark the boundaries of meandering footpaths once named "cocchi" (shaded footpaths), edged by arbours and flowers.
On the left, in the shade of a small wooded area, hides the Giardino Segreto (Secret Garden), designed as a separate entity with stairs paved with cobblestones, walls, a fountain and a sundial. It used to be decorated with Roman statues, while iron railings marked all the paths. In Valadier's plan one can percieve the influence of the Enlightment concept of creating new places as sets for fake ruins, in turn an indispensable inspiration for evocative wanderings.
The Villa's vast central building, named Casino Principale (main country house) in the original plan, became known as "The Delizia" (delight). Valadier designed its magnificent expansive front, spatially enlarged by the exedrae in the square. Together, the Villa is beautiful and harmonious, with elements both of Roman baroque style and French buildings of the same period. At the rear, the Villa does not have the same symmetry as the front, and sits serenely on top of the hill towards the sunset and the chapel. The building has three levels: ground floor, mezzanine and main floor (piano nobile). The ground floor houses a large salon, a drawing room with pool table, a large, fully equipped kitchen and bathrooms. On the mezzanine several small libraries and service rooms are located. On the main floor, in addition to two entry halls with painted walls and numerous bedrooms, there is a vast terrace with the most splendid view over Spoleto, a long balcony at the front, the loggia to the west and several small drawing rooms.
The Main Villa can accommodate up to 21 guests. The bedrooms are distributed on different sides of the Noble ( first) floor and each has a different but magnificent view of the valley. Ten bedrooms: 8 doubles and 2 singles; 8 bedrooms have ensuite private bathrooms, 2 bedrooms share one bathroom; all bedrooms have heating and free wifi; 7 bedrooms have also air conditioning. Each room has its own personality, 700’s pastel colors painted walls and antique furniture, and all of them magnificent overlooking to the valley and the park. In the recent restructuring most of the bathrooms have been, with great care, completely renovated.
The Annex, traditionally called “Casino delle Vecchie Cucine” - "Oldie Kitchens", is a three-storey building which originally housed the Villa's kitchens and most of the service rooms. The Oldie Kitchens are directly connected to the Villa's ground floor by way of a spacious tunnel dug into the hill. The building has a more linear plan and sits on the NW side of the hill, offering a magnificent view over the valley at sunset time, facing Montefalco and Assisi. The third floor is on the same level as the Villa, are 2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms can be used as a self-contained apartment; on the middle floor built along the hill slope - internally connected by way of the tunnel- a double bedroom with bathroom, the White room and a large studio room, the King studio room, go down to a separate spacious garden, the sunset Square (Piazzale del Tramonto). This square has a small building, the workshop lab, originally a tool and carriage shed. It is now an art studio and can include the external area as an additional studio. The Oldie Kitchens can be accessed independently from the Villa through the "Viale dei Gelsi" (Mulberry Lane) from where the view of the valley at sunset is breathtaking.
11 of the 13 bedrooms are air conditioned and the windows have mosquito nets.

It consists of a flat area and a large portion bounded by the hillsides of Umbria with several wonderful small towns rich in art, history and local traditions: Assisi, Trevi, Montefalco, Spello. The altitude is between 200 and 800 metres above sea level. The plain below is predominantly agricultural with arable crops, while on the sunny slopes of the hills some of the the best Italian olive oil is produced. There are abundant wooded areas with tall trees and rare shrubs, as well as pastures, on the surrounding mountains.
The valley (a lake in prehistoric times) is far from industrial areas and major highways, and therefore the beautiful landscape has remained magically untouched.
