The house in Via del Pizzicore in Tuscany is an authentic, and authentically restored, pre-Renaissance building, in the village of San Lorenzo a Merse. It has no gardens or acreage, which is typical of genuine pre- or Renaissance villages, but the whole village is a wonderful livable space; the square in front of the Church, the steps around the old well, the low walls; people always find a moment to sit and chat and play with children and cats. I know it is not common in this country, but it is so enjoyable.
Via del Pizzicore is divided into three floors: The ground floor has a bed room with a sofa bed, a bath room, and separate shower room done in white mosaic. This room can be used as a living room or play room for children during the day. The Second floor has the living room, dining room, and kitchen with a bread oven. The Third floor has a double bed with bathroom. There is also a walk-in closet, a fantastic fireplace, large windows with balcony and a glass terrace with a view of the valleys and the Tuscan hills.
It is totally renovated and restored respecting the original stone walls, the chestnut-wood beams and antique tiles, introducing modern technology and concepts as well as art in the design of the staircase that turns as a sculpture from the ground floor to the third floor in travertine stone and wood. The large fireplace itself is a sculpture, extending from the living- room to the bed-room on the third floor.
In the village there is a cafe and one little store. It sells basic things, from salami to moth-balls. The shopping is done in San Rocco a Pilli, a nearby little (very little) town, where you can find everything, from the bank to gourmet stores, and very good ones!
We recommend that you fly into in Roma in the morning and drive to San Lorenzo on the Autostrada del Sole. It is about 3 ½ hours and is a very easy drive. If you fly into Florence or Pisa you may have a long wait to change planes in Rome or some other major airport. It is fun to have lunch in one of the small villages along the road (Orvieto is a neat place to visit, and so is Todi or Montepulciano).
We get off the highway at the VAL DI CHIANA exit and follow the directions to SIENA. After reaching the beltway around Siena we follow the direction toward GROSSETO. After 15 kilometers, you will make a right turn on a road with a sign for MONTICIANO. On that road the first little village you encounter -- about a mile -- is SAN LORENZO A MERSE. You really need to rent a car if you are going to truly see Tuscany. There are so many beautiful places to see. You cannot park on the street in front of the residence but you can drive the car there to unload groceries, luggage, etc. There is a place to park your car right before you enter the archway to the village. From there it takes about two minutes to walk to the residence.
San Lorenzo a Merse is in the heart of Tuscany: 15 minutes from Siena, 35 minutes from the seashore, 40 minutes from San Gimignano, 1 hour from Florence, 40 minutes from Arezzo.
The Merse is a river with hot springs. There are two spas in Bagni di Petriolo, 10 minutes away from San Lorenzo a Merse. One is down near the river, and the other one, a big one, is on top of the hills. We don't go to either. Instead we go into the river itself, where the natural pools are. In that particular area there are miles of forest all around. In Tuscany we grow wheat in the winter and the hills are covered with the most vibrant emerald green. We love to eat and cook... You will be able to taste specialties of the local cuisine.
Spring explodes in March, with all the wild flowers and mimosa blossoms. The fruit trees start to bloom then and reach their peak in April. It is time for fresh asparagus, artichokes, peas, and all the new lettuces. May and June are fragrant with roses, lilacs, irises and peonies. Every house has flower pots and urns outside the door. July and August are opulent with fruits. Peaches, plums, cherries, and apricots are picked ripe from the trees. It is the time to go swimming at the seashore and have a great fish dinner in Orbetello or Follonica. In October and November people are making wine, collecting chestnuts and wild mushrooms in the forest...it is a splendid time to be there. Even if San Lorenzo has a beautiful church, you shouldn't miss San Galgano, the most spiritual and gorgeous Gothic abbey in Tuscany. It is in the middle of the Tuscan hills a few miles on the road after Monticiano.
These are some of the things I love. I am sure you already know the classical itineraries that I do not need to mention, and they are all at reach from San Lorenzo a Merse. It is a small piece of land in this big world but I love it... SiglindaTripAdvisor property ID 3850257...Read more
