Villa Io promises tranquility, privacy and a taste of traditional village life. The villa is ideal for families wanting to experience the authentic Greek island life-style of days gone by without compromising on modern comfort.
Villa Io once served as the village school for the local children of Megalochori.
The old school house has been sensitively renovated, preserving the original organic shape and proportions of the smooth walls, vaulted ceilings and arched openings of the existing building. These elements remind you of how the building was constructed, in the old Santorinian tradition of carving buildings into the soft pumice-stone earth of the village hills. The layout of the house takes its cues from traditional Santorini houses, echoing the shapes and colors of the island's unique architecture.
Another notable feature of the Villa is its natural ambient interior temperature. The natural insulation of the earthen walls of the space regulated the temperature of the school house, keeping the interior warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Today, this natural insulation continues to be an advantage, maintaining a constantly cool interior environment in the villa, even on the hottest summer days.
