Additional Location Information

Sarnico is an important commercial and touristic centre on the right side
of Iseo lake, where it begins to get narrower to become Oglio river. The village, which is protected at the beginning by hills, leans softly forwards to the lake, and it’s exposed. The hilly elevation and the lake breeze mitigate the climate.
Its geographic position and its outskirts, where there are many villas, green spaces,
amusement and spectacular foreshortenings on the lake offer tourists an ideal benchmark for holidays.
The territory was already inhabited in prehistoric times in fact remains of a fortified village was discovered after an operation of drainage of the lake bottom. Remains of Roman age came to light in 1907 during the construction of Villa Faccanoni and along all the coast near Predore. But first documents go back at 862 a.C.

HISTORIC CENTRE The walk, for who loves to do some shopping, has a medieval semicircular structure with the back turned towards the mountain. Some remains of castles of Counts Martinengo are still visible.
The historic centre is well-known with the name of “Contrada”.
Going along “via Lantieri” (in a multicoloured setting of shops) you can still note some architectonic proofs of the old village: portals, narrow streets, passages under arcades, old houses with solid walls.
It’s advisable to follow the running of the Contrada to arrive at the top of historic centre: the SS.Redentore square, where there is the parish church of the eighteenth century. The parish church is in baroque style and it’s dedicated to Saint Martin of tours.The stately front, executed in 1777, is planned on two floors and it’s made rich by series of statues and by the recently bronze portal (work of Meli).
Inside it’s possible to admire works of particular artistic interest. They are:
- the picture that represents “Saint Martin Bishop with the emperor Valentiniano”. It’s set in the apse behind the altar (work of Cappella);
- the “paliotto” in white marble of the high altar (work of Andrea Fantoni);
- the picture “The Virgin Mary and Saints” of Cavagna (put in the third chapel from left);
- the statue in golden wood of “The Virgin Mary with child” (work of Andrea Fantoni).
The church of Saint Rocco rises next to the parish church. It was built in 1705 to enlarge a votive chapel in 1630. Going on you can enter again in the lanes of the historic centre, that keep characteristic places.
In one of these lanes, via San Paolo, you can arrive at the fifteenth century church of Saint Paul (for the visit apply to the keeper in the house beside).
Inside you can admire beautiful pictures of XV century (for example the picture behind the altar, that represents the “Madonna addolorata e santi”). “The tower of the clock” rises in the little square. It was raised in 1850 on the base (still visible) of a perimetric tower of the castle.
Going on towards “via Santo Stefano”, you can go towards the lake for a restorative pause.
SOMMARUGA AND THE MODERN STYLE Sarnico is also the centre of architectonic models, which are considered important examples of modern style in Lombardy (all works of Giuseppe Sommaruga). Starting from the nursery school in S.S.Redentore square, you can go up towards the main road and see where the cemetery front rises (inside it’s possible to admire the Mausoleum of Faccanoni’s family).
Going on towards Predore (3 Km.), next to shipyards Riva, you can see Villa Surre. Going back towards the centre of Sarnico in “via Veneto”, on the coast, there is Villa Faccanoni. The route concludes in XX Settembre square with Villa Passeri. In proximity to Villa Faccanoni, on the lake it’s possible to visit the characteristic church “Stella Maris” (1935) that is for years the starting point of the traditional summer procession of enlightened boats.
OUTSKIRTS Going along “via Manzoni”, which run along Fiume Oglio (effluent of the lake) and, after that you pass the “Cappelletta dei morti della peste del 1630”, you arrive at the hamlet “Fosio”.
A little church dedicated to the Virgin Mary opens a conurbation. Then you can arrive at the dam built in 1933 across a group of old houses and a seventeenth century mill. Going back on the main road that leads to Bergamo, northward the built-up area you can see the seventeenth century villa (today it’s property of Cancelli family), an interesting office on three floors, where now there is a refined and elegant piano-bar. Going up towards the hill, you can visit the little church of S.S.Nazario and Rocco. Over the torrent Guerra there is the Rocchetta, a stately and sumptuous palace of the eighteenth century of property Buelli. It’s built on the ruins of an old medieval fortification (today it’s the wine concern “Valcalepio”).

Lake Iseo is located between the larger and more famous Lake Garda and Lake Como.
It’s along and narrow lake winding North South and sheltered by mountains.
It’s a more manageable size,however and a great destination for travellers who have already visited and appreciated the principal italian lakes or simply for holiday-makers who prefer exploring off the beaten track.
Lake Iseo has the biggest european island of lake full of tourists coming from United Kingdom,Usa,Germany,France,Holland and Scandinavia
Lake Iseo is full of fish which is served at restaurants alla round its shores.
It’s also a richly agricultural area,with small vineyard,allotments and olive groves stuffed with abundance.
Ancient chestnut groves are found on the island slopes and in the autumn we found dozens of italians out gathering sweet chestnuts and mushrooms.As well as fishing,agricolture and tourism,the lake is renowed for the net making industry.
The islanders of Monteisola in particolar are famous for their historic skill at making fishing nets,and also tennis,volley ball and football nets.
The lake is close to the towns of Bergamoand Brescia,and it has fairly good transport connections with a useful little railway running from Brescia up to the eastern shore of the lake and through the mountains valley to the north,The valle Camonica.
Monteisola is quite a nice italian destination for walkers.The ancient via Valeriana contours along above the lake,linking Brescia with the valle Camonica to the north and this has been marked and signposted for hikers.
Most of the lakeside towns have a picturesque promenade,a few interesting buildings and some winding historic lanes.
There are some interesting tourist attractions around or in easy reach of lake Iseo,includine some rather visual sights.
For example the famous Piramidi of Zone bizzarre geological formations where erosion has left the pinnacles surmounted by boulders,like high skinny mushrooms.
The valley at the head of the lake,the valle Canonica,heads into the southern Alps and is dotted with remarkable rock-carvings covering thousands of years,from prehistory to the arrival of the Romans.
At Capo di Ponte,on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo railway line,there is an archaeological park where you can view lots of these fascinatine etchings.
At the southern end of the lake is the Franciacorta,a pretty area of countryside which is famous for its wine:with vineyards,monasteries and villa sto admire as well as a wetland nature riserve.
The large towns of brescia-Bergamo and Verona are all fairly easy to reach for a spot of culture and museum visits.
The most important towns of lake Iseo are located on southern and western coasts and are Sarnico for its nice cathedral and liberty villas and Iseo,both for beaches,attractions,typical bars and restaurants.

Sarnico is a commercial and turistic centre located on the west coast of the Iseo Lake.
The area extends as far as the lake encircled by the hills protecting form the cold of the winter. Sarnico is located in a strategic turistic position as is far not very kilometers from important towns like Bergamo, Brescia and Milano, connected to the airports of Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio through the motorway A4.
By train we suggest Rovato stop and the continuation by bus as far as Paratico or Bergamo stop and by bus up to Sarnico(Municipality stop).
By car we suggest Palazzolo sull'Oglio exit on the motorway A4 (Milano-Venezia).
