(Minimum of one week rental required) Villa Sauve is located on a small hill overlooking the foothills of the Cevennes mountains in the front, and rolling fields of vines, sunflowers and lavender in the back. This holiday rental in Languedoc (originally built sometime in the 1500s) is on 10 acres and provides nearly 360 degrees of truly glorious views.
Outdoors, there are three old stone buildings surrounding a very large courtyard shaded by 100 year old Micocoulier (special to this region of France) trees and grass lawns, a summer kitchen, a good sized pool area with another kitchen, a wooden (air conditioned) hut in the woods, two large vegetable gardens, flower cutting gardens, terraces and various nut, olive and fruit trees.
The first stone building (covered in pale pink paint) is the main villa and where the property owners have always lived. The downstairs consists of an arched-ceiling kitchen with huge fireplace and a connecting large arched dining room - both with exposed stone. The elipse marble dining table (for 12) was made for this room in Morocco and the chairs are Philip Stark (with comfortable cushions). A colorful antique American quilt (from the owners collection) is the centerpiece. The kitchen itself is a fully equipped modern one but situated within a rustic setting. There is also a separate patouie (food pantry) with the fridge, shelving and a Nespresso maker. Upstairs are two double bedrooms with full bathrooms. There are two salons; one with a hefty plasma screen (with 3 types of DVD players-including American and Blue Ray),and the second salon with rose-gold ancient stones on the supporting wall. This is used as an extra bedroom if needed. Outside this house, but still attached, is another bedroom and full bathroom, with its own terrace facing West.
The summer kitchen is a delightful spot. It has the original old forge fireplace (and newly built-in pizza oven) and supporting stone walls on two sides and a tiled roof. It is open on the other sides. There is a large architectural stone table and benches, a stove top, shelving, fridge, and an ancient stone sink found on the grounds of the property. There are loads of dishes and glasses and bowls etc here. It is a wonderful place to cook and eat, both in the evening and during the day as it is shaded by two large fig trees. Adjoining the summer kitchen is a pink terrace with an oval granite table on an antique curved iron base. This can seat eight or more guests. A great place for watching sunsets, sipping aperitifs, and eating dinners.
Next to the kitchen on the North side is the large ancient cave. It is where previous owners used to make wine. Inside are various storage areas including an air conditioned wine cellar and food storage room. The exercise equipment is there in the summer as well. (An elliptical machine, bench and weights, etc.) Next to the cave, on a little terrace, is a barbeque area with both a gas and charcoal Weber grills.
In the old farmhouse there is a Moroccan style guest room with a separate shower room and a toilet closet. The striped curtains were hand-made in Fez. It has a very comfortable sofa, which can turn into a sofa bed. This room opens up at the back to a large, pretty terrace with tables and lounge chairs, a fountain and pond, and loads of plants. It is an ideal place as it offers privacy. The terrace faces East and is beautiful for sunrises and is also cool in the afternoons. The arched door next to this room is a stone walled media room with comfortable seating. It has most of the DVD and music collection and a TV on the wall. Adjoining this salon is a good-sized central hallway. There is a guest bathroom with rain shower at the back near the back entrance to the terrace. Next to that is the very large room called the Orangerie. It is a wonderful room for entertaining, eating, or just lounging around. There is a kitchenette along one wall, an art pottery collection, a very comfortable sitting area with antique lounge chairs, a handmade sofa, and a beautiful Louis 14th armoire containing all dishes, glasses etc. and a large antique Indian dining table. Windows on every side allows for plenty of light. This used to be the old tractor shed.
Next to the Orangerie is the pool bathroom/changing room with a toilet and rain shower.
This is adjacent to the gates to the pool area, which is nicely planted and so seems quite private. There are a collection of comfy lounge chairs and umbrellas. The pool is a large one and excellent for lap swimming. The views from the pool area are lovely. There is another kitchen and eating area by the pool with a small fridge, a large ancient brick work surface, and various shelves filled with ceramic serving bowls, both wooden and pretty plastic plates, and a variety of unbreakable glasses and cups. This is a good shady place to have a nice lunch with seating for 12. The whole pool area is fenced and well protected for small children.
A shaded area with three hammocks next to the pool is a perfect spot for relaxing. West of the pool there is a zinnia, sunflower and cosmos cutting garden, so fresh flowers are always available!
And finally, there is a small hut (air conditioned) situated in the woods. Inside there is a unique mosaic tiled bathroom facing the green oak trees and woods, a separate toilet and sink area. There is a Queen size iron bed and quite a bit of concealed shelving. It is painted blue and curtained with the feel of an English country cottage. Outside the hut is a shaded eating area with a stone table made from the old tiles found on the property, a double hammock, a sink, work surface, and of course, a Nespresso maker. On the other side (facing North) is a large, shaded circular wooden deck surrounded by green oaks with many plants (succulents and ferns) and wooden lounge chairs. Another good place for apperos at night or morning tea and coffee.
Also on the property are four bikes, as well as a variety of baby and small child things (crib, junior bed, swings, trampoline, car and booster seats, kids bikes, etc). For convenience, there is a full laundry room with two washing machines, sinks, dryer, etc., as well as two additional refrigerators and two deep freezers.
