Additional Location Information

Located in the province of Fermo, the town of Smerillo lies on a rocky ridge at 806 meters above sea level. Eastwards, it dominates over all of the area of Fermo up to the sea and the valleys of Tenna and Aso, down to the coasts of Abruzzi; westwards it is possible to see the peaks of the Sibillini Mountains; northwards the hills of Macerata, stretching up to Mt. Conero; southwards it is possible to see up to the the Laga Mountains and the Gran Sasso.
The town center of Smerillo is composed of a small and very picturesque core made of stone buildings. On the central square you will find the Chiesa Parrocchiale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo (Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul), while on the main street, in the high part of the town, you will find the Chiesa di S. Caterina (S. Catherine Church, form the 14th century), in Romanesque style. In terms of urban planning, the higher part of the town was surrounded by fortified walls, with the palace of the nobles of Smerillo; in the northern part there were more private houses, up to the tower-gate that opened on the hamlet. The hamlet itself was protected by city walls with two gates, which can still be seen. Another landmark that should be visited is La Fessa (the fissure), a rift in sandstone rock rich in Pliocene fossils, that is visited by both tourists and Paleontology researchers. Other places of interest are Il Museo dei Fossili e dei Minerali (Museum of fossils and minerals), Il Museo Pinacoteca dell'Arte dei Bambini (Children's art Museum and picture gallery)e LaPinacoteca d'Arte Contemporanea (Gallery of Contemporary Art).
The town of Smerillo hosts many events, such as the renowned open air film festival “Cinema sotto le stelle” (Cinema under the stars), the country fair “Castagnata in piazza” (Chestnut festival in the streets), as well as many other exhibits and theatrical performances.
