Welcome to Customs House – an oasis of peace and serenity that combines 19th century charm with 21st century convenience. Built in 1858, extensively remodeled in 2003, and newly furnished in 2013, Customs House offers comfortable spaces throughout to relax, gracious new Maine cottage furnishings, every modern convenience, an inviting wrap-around deck, and a lovely, private garden.
Walk up a winding stone path to the front porch and enter the large, light-filled living room with ample couches and chairs, bay windows toward the ocean, a cozy wood burning stove for cool evenings, and new stereo. To the left is the cheery, tiled mud room with shelves and hooks for backpacks and shoes; the washer and dryer in a closet; extensive storage; and an adjacent half bathroom.
From the living room, enter the kitchen/dining area with doors to a large wrap-around deck with teak seating and dining table with umbrella, a gas grill, and an adjacent fire pit. Inside, the kitchen is a cook’s dream – fully stocked with brand new utensils/amenities and top drawer appliances, plus a wine rack, island seating, kitchen desk, and adjacent dining area.
From the mud room, descend the stairs to the lower, walk-out level. Here an expansive family room with handsome new wood floor offers welcoming furniture, a wide-screen TV with cable and DVD player; a game/puzzle table; a sofa bed that sleeps two; an adjacent single bedroom; and a bathroom with shower. A door from the family room leads to the beautiful garden with a stone patio, expansive lawn, and tasteful landscaping including blueberry and raspberry bushes.
From the living room, head upstairs to the second floor to find three newly painted and decorated bedrooms; two with queens and one with bunk beds. There is also a full, newly refurbished master bathroom with a tub and shower.
Within a few blocks are Southwest Harbor’s many restaurants (including the island’s best pizza), and an ice cream shop, specialty food/wine market, library, and bicycle rental/repair store. Half block away is a stop for the free Island Explorer bus. Excellent wifi and cell throughout house/grounds.
Pets welcome with an additional fee of $150.
Additional apartment above the garage available for an extra $300.
