Additional Location Information
This home is within walking distance to downtown Spokane (for Hoopfest, for instance) to the east (.8 mile), and Browne's Addition's historic Cannon Circle restaurants, pub, pizzeria, and Tully's, to the west (3 blocks); only a few short blocks' walk from Coeur d'Alene Park's gazebo, Elkfest and Artfest, and free concerts in summer, the Museum of Arts and Culture, and rests in the midst of countless admirable views for the jogger or cyclist (Centennial Trail, Overlook Park). Our home is ideal for runners in both the Susan B. Komen and Bloomsday races, both of which run right by the house! The neighborhood is extremely safe and walker/runner friendly. Situated on a corner, there is good parking.
City transit bus lines run one block south and half a block north of the 1899 House, and if you are coming to Spokane for medical reasons, or for support for a loved one, it is located approximately one mile from Spokane's "hospital hill" Deaconess and Providence/Sacred Heart hospitals. If you are considering a sabbatical, conference, graduation, or other education-related visit, 1899 House is only two miles west of Gonzaga University, WSU Spokane; four miles south of Spokane Falls CC/Mukogawa Center, and nine miles south of Whitworth University. Spokane International Airport is a ten-minute drive, and Fairchild Air Force Base lies a twenty-minute drive north. If guests are interested in the annual Bloomsday or Susan B. Komen races, each runs along the streets adjacent to the 1899 House! There are good sidewalks and safe streets to run on in practice too--it is a great neighborhood! The heart of Downtown Spokane, with its famous microbreweries and wineries is only one short mile's walk (city transit busses run one block from the house, with service throughout the county)! The Amtrack and central bus terminal is 1.5 miles from the house. We are less than 15 minutes' drive from Spokane National Airport (GEG). In addition, within two blocks of the house to the west is historic Cannon Circle, with the Elk Publik House, E.J.'s Garden Bistro, the Italian Trattoria, Tully's, the El Que's hispanic offerings, and Pacific Pizza; two blocks' walk farther west is Coeur d'Alene Park. Browne's Addition is replete with historic homes and things to see, and abounds with festivals and concerts in high season, most of which are free to all. The Spokane Museum of Arts and Culture, with Azar's Restaurant, is also two blocks west. Spokane, whether walking, driving or riding, north, south, east or west, is a town full of things to see and do, that are all highly accessible with or without a car, from the 1899 House!
This original family home, built for the third mayor of Spokane, offers a charming combination of gracious family home within an historic setting, with in-residence owner/proprietors, and the privacy of one's own large guest room(s), each with queen bed and bath, with easy access to the small conveniences of home (such as a DVD library and common room; a small kitchenette in the adjacent room; no cooking priveleges, but coffee/tea/cocoa service and guest refrigerator) and personal privacy. A continental-style breakfast is available in the main-level dining room, or the nearby frontroom alcove. Guests may also use the wide front porch and shadier side garden in season. After registering, each guest is provided with a personal combination to the private guest entrance, and may come and go at will, even during the hours when the main entry to the home is locked (10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.). The 1899 House is "homey" yet elegant, comfortable, yet personal to each guest (dietary restrictions accommodated with notice; cozy flannel sheets in winter, if desired!), and presents a unique opportunity to feel "at home" while far from one's own.
