About Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

What better way to celebrate the independence of the USA than visiting one of its founding cities? Held on the 4th of July every year in Boston, the Boston Pops Fireworks Show is one of the most celebrated American traditions. Bostotonians line the esplanade by the hundreeds of thousands to catch glimpses of fireworks and listen to the booming music presented by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, also known as the Boston Pops, and Americans all over the country tune into coverage of the parade on their TV and computer screens.

History of the Boston Pops

In 1885, Henry Lee Higginson, the founder of the Boston Symphony Orchestra wanted to present a lighter music to concert goers, so he created an offshoot of his company known as the Boston Pops. These “Promenade Concerts” played light classical hits, and current popular hits from musical theater. Arthur Fiedler took over the group in 1929, and served as conductor for fifty years. His main goal was to bring classical music to the masses, instead of just a wealthy few. He began with offering concerts for the public at the Hatch Shell on Boston’s Esplanade, a public park along the Charles River. The idea was a hit, as the group sold an incredible number of albums and songs over the years, with their December concert being extremely popular for holiday music.

It was during Fiedler’s tenure that the Fourth of July concert tradition began. On July 4, 1929, the first free Esplanade Concert was performed at the specially constructed acoustic shell along the banks of the Charles River. The concert was a hit, and a tradition had begun. By 1976, during the bicentennial extravaganza, more than 400,000 people came to hear the orchestra perform American classics. Recent guest artists have included the Pointer Sisters, Arturo Sandoval, Roberta Flack, Don McLean, Mel Tormé, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Trisha Yearwood, to name just a few.

About the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

Helmed by longtime conductor Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is a two-hour concert with booming drums, honking horns, and endless strings. The orchestra plays the American classics, like the “1812 Overture” complete with cannons and church bells, and many other patriotic songs. They also mix in current hits, and plenty of songs you’d recognize. It is a fun show for kids and adults alike, and you’ll be singing and dancing the whole way through. After the show, there is a one-hour fireworks display that will rival (and probably beat) anything you’ve seen in your life. Picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs dot the landscape of the Esplanade throughout the day as spectators claim their spots. The harbor is also full of boats, canoes, and barges as people take to the seas to listen to the concert and get the best views of the fireworks.

Attending the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

If you want to see the action in person, you should plan to attend the show and arrive very early to claim a great spot. The event on the 3rd and the 4th is free and open to the public. Admittance to the event is on a first-come, first-served basis. Some revelers arrive at 6am in the morning to grab a spot on the lawn, even though the show doesn’t start until sundown. There are a variety of food and merchandise options available for purchase. On July 4th, the television broadcast begins at 8:00 p.m., the concert starts at 8:30 p.m. and ends at 10:30 p.m. with a fireworks display from 10:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m....
