About Cabo Rojo
Measuring 72 square miles and founded in 1771, Cabo Rojo is a Caribbean city containing nine barrios and sits on the South-Western coast of Puerto Rico. Its name translates in Spanish as ‘Red Headland’ and is due to the large number of minerals which turn the water a reddish tint at nightfall. Fun fact: Christopher Columbus is believed to have given the settlement its name.
The area is mostly flat, with a handful of mountains. In previous centuries, locals earned a living from the salt mines, but today the local economy benefits more from fishing and tourism. The salt flats have become a popular tourist destination, as well as an important ecological landmark and home to many species of wildlife, birds, flora and fauna.
Vibrant and not particularly large for a city, Cabo Rojo has an impressive number of restaurants, many of which serve up traditional cuisine (criollo). Make sure to try some during your stay!
What to do
Eat at one of the many seafood eateries in the fishing village of Puerto Real in the barrio of Joyunda. You'll be glad you did.
Climb the stairs of the Los Morrillos Lighthouse called El Faro to get amazing ocean views. The lighthouse sits 200 feet above sea level on limestone cliffs.
See if you can spot the endangered yellow-shouldered blackbird at Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge. This sub-tropical forest is home to more than 50 different species of bird. There's a visitor’s center and many walking trails to enjoy.
Go swimming in the clear, surf-free waters at Punta Boquerón Beach. It boasts a blue flag and there are lifeguards, showers and a ramp for disabled access. You can also try stand-up paddle boarding, jet skiing and waterskiing. Parking costs $4 a day.
