About International CES

The bright lights of Las Vegas welcome the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) every January. What better place to unveil the biggest tech innovations of the year than the city that’s built on imagination and sensation? The show is one of the largest events of its kind in the world and attracts more than 170,000 attendees. A total of about 2.2 million square feet of exhibition space is used during the event.

History of International CES

International CES was born in New York City in 1967. Of course one of the biggest consumer shows started from the biggest city on earth. Over 100 exhibitors showed off products to 17,000 attendees. From 1978 to 1994, CES was held twice each year: once in January in Las Vegas known as Winter Consumer Electronics Show (WCES) and once in June in Chicago, known as Summer Consumer Electronics Show (SCES). Over the years, interest in the summer CES show began to plummet, despite a few attempts at growing the popularity. In 1998, the show changed to a once-a-year format with Las Vegas as the location. In Las Vegas, the show is one of the largest in the area, taking up to 18 days to set up, run and break down.

Famous products that debuted at CES

Dozens of now famous and incredibly useful products made their sparkling debut at the CES show over the years. In 1970, the VCR was showcased to attendees. In 1981, both the camcorder and the compact disc (CD) came out. In 1994, a digital satellite system was demonstrated for the first time to consumers, and in 1996, the DVD made its triumphant premiere. Consumers saw clearly in 1998, when the High Definition TV debuted. 2001 was a banner year with both the XBOX and Plasma TV being showcased, while Blue Ray made its way into the world just two short years later, in 2003. Tablets unveiled in 2010 while Smart TVs came out in 2014.

Every year, new products make their introductions. Because of the hype surrounding these announcements, the event regularly attracts thousands of journalists from all over the world.

Registering for the Event

CES is a trade-only event for the consumer technology industry and not open to the general public. All attendees must provide credentials in advance to verify affiliation with the consumer technology industry and must present a government-issued photo ID upon arrival to the event to pick up a badge. Family, friends and children who accompany you to Las Vegas will not be granted access to CES unless they are over the age of 18 and have proof of industry affiliation.

All Access Passes are in the range of $1500 (depending when you buy), while the Content & Advertising Pass is more affordable, around $800. The CE Pass is $600, and there are dozens of FREE events for those who are traveling to the show too.

About the Show

The star of the show is the exhibition hall. Thousands of companies are exhibitors and you can spend your entire time walking around this massive space researching, networking, and playing with some of the newest “toys” available in the tech industry....
