About Lynchburg, Virginia
Lynchburg is an independent city that's nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
It sits on the banks of the James River, and has spectacular views from almost everywhere in the city.
Before the English settled here in 1757, the area was home to Monacan and Siouan Tutelo tribes. You can still see evidence of their habitation today, just keep an eye out!
The area is of great historic importance, as it was the only major city not to be captured by the Union before the end of the American Civil War. It was also the site where the Confederates surrendered... but, more on that later.
The city was shaped by the various military events that happened here. As a result of both the American Civil War and World Wars, this place changed massively. Find out more about this in the Lynchburg museum.
The city leaders are dedicated to revitalization efforts, and they're just beginning to take effect. Make sure you visit before everyone else realizes what's going on and it becomes a hive of tourist activity. Go now, and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of it all.
What to do
Visit the Appomattox Courthouse – history buffs will love it. But, even if you don't like history it's worth seeing.
This is where the Confederate Army surrendered to the Union commander Ulysses S. Grant, therefore ending the civil war and bringing peace to the nation. It's pretty important!
For something a little less heavy, take the kids to Amazement Square – a museum built for children to explore and learn new things. It's a great day out for all the family.
If your group is outdoorsy, there's plenty to do in Lynchburg. Hike up to Crabtree falls – it's the longest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. The trail is just under two miles and has spectacular views all the way up.
Climb up to one of the Peaks of Otter and you'll see Virginia like you've never seen it before. You can also hike along the Appalachian Trail, or one of the other routes, to see more of the countryside.
After a long day, relax by Smith Mountain Lake and be engulfed by the natural beauty of this area.
