About Newfoundland and Labrador

Now before you animal lovers get too excited, big fluffy dogs don't run around the streets here (we checked).

Newfoundland and Labrador is, however, a fantastic vacation spot. Whether you want to take in the history, try something adventurous or just relax, this is the place for you.

About Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easterly province of Canada. It's a small collection of islands with a lot to offer.

Though it's tempting to stay in St John's - the capital - it's also worth looking at other areas for a more unusual stay. FlipKey has a wide variety of Newfoundland and Labrador vacation rentals, so why not start looking?

The history of this province can be traced back over 9,000 years, right back to when the Beothuk tribes started living here. Visit one of the many museums to learn more about them!

Its position on the Atlantic, and the fact that it’s made up of lots of little islands, means that Newfoundland and Labrador's climate varies quite a lot. The summers are cool, and the winter sees a bit of snow.

What to do in Newfoundland and Labrador

There's so much to do on these islands, it's hard to know where to start.

To make sure you see all that's on offer, we suggest taking a boat tour and exploring the main islands. While you're out on the water you'll see huge icebergs and probably some humpback whales - don't forget to bring your camera!

There are many lighthouses on the islands, but our favorite is the Ferryland lighthouse. Not only is it one of the oldest - it was built in the 1870s - but they do delicious gourmet lunches! Just pick a spot outside and enjoy.

While we're talking about food, you must try some of the wild Atlantic salmon! You'll never be too far from a plate of fish and chips during this vacation.

For the adventurous, follow a local guide on a harvesting rail up the Torngat mountains. The vast wilderness is spectacular and you may see Inuits hunt, fish and travel as they've done for centuries.

Top Newfoundland and Labrador travel tips

You won't need to worry about your French vocabulary here. Most of the locals speak English.

Gratuities aren't usually included in Canadian bars and restaurants, so you'll be expected to leave a tip. Between 10-15% is standard.

An extra jumper won't go amiss on this vacation, either. Even in the summer, the sea breeze can be a bit harsh. But it's made worth it when you see a whale or two on the horizon.

FlipKey has a vast selection of vacation rentals for you to choose from in Newfoundland and Labrador. Just pick an island and see where you end up. An unforgettable vacation awaits...

Woodhavencottages
Wood haven Cottages

We stayed at Wood Haven Cottages in New Harbor NFLD during our retirement vacation for 2 weeks. We found the hosts to be some of the nicest people we have met during our trip. The cottage had everything we needed, was very clean and comfortable beds and lots of extras for the cottage. We had a tire with a slow leak one morning, and Wendall made sure that the problem was taken care of and even phoned the garage to get our tire repaired. Rachel checked each day to see if we needed anything for our stay. Would recommend this location to anyone going to NFLD.see more
Little Wild Cove Cottage
Beautiful location and cottage.

Twillingate Island has some spectacular scenery, on land and in the ocean. There were many icebergs around the coast when we were there. Wild Cove is a beautiful setting with spectacular views over Burnt Island. The Little Wild Cove Cottage is a spacious, well designed, well built, comfortable building with above average amenities. The cottage and kitchen are better equipped than most we have stayed at previously. The bathroom could use proper handles on the interior of the two sliding doors, however. Having the second spacious (queen) bedroom in a separate building is a unique feature. We also enjoyed the large outside deck.see more
Waterfront Property in Newfoundland
A Great Family Getaway

This was our first trip to Newfoundland and our stay was perfect for the family. The cottage was cosy and offered an amazing view of Tors Cove Pond. You felt isolated and the kids had plenty of places to explore - the woods, water and nearby hiking trails. The owners communicated very well with us and things were as promised. We loved that we were able to explore beyond the property to nearby islands with the canoe available to us. We would highly recommend this property to other couples or families looking for a relaxing getaway.see more
Love's Anchor by the Sea (oceanview rental)
Quiet relaxing place

We stayed here with my grown two sons. Everyday my family would walk down to the wharf and see what the fisherman had brought in for the day. The house had a real homey feeling and the washer and dryer were a great feature to have. Lots of hiking trail in the area to explore! … see more
COMMANDER’S KEEP VACATION HOME WE ARE OPEN!!(
The View is Spectacular!

The location of this house is amazing! Catherine, our host, was extremely responsive and attentive. The house is lovely - clean and well appointed - everything you'd want in the kitchen and enough supplies provided (toilet paper, paper towel, coffee, etc) - which is key when staying somewhere for a vacation. Be prepared for lots of wind on the balcony, given its location. No BBQ - and when on holidays, it's not ideal for meals - perhaps something can be added to the balcony to block from the wind to accommodate a BBQ.see more
Grand Fairways Log Chalet
Great little cabins

We had a great time. Cabins were very clean and well equipped, lots of space, private backyard and Ira was incredibly personable and provided great service. Would definitely stay again. … see more
