“Perfect for an aussie family” My wife and I recently brought our two sons and their wives for a holiday in and around New York. Travelling all the way from australia meant that all our accommodation had to be booked online, with equal measures of faith and prayer that we got it right. We wanted a place that kept us together as family and when we looked at Wilder St online, it looked just right. Which it absolutely turned out to be! We loved the warmth and homeliness of the place, the beds were all wonderfully comfortable and the furniture was delightfully eclectic. Loved the loft and the basement games/gym area. The street and surrounds were beautiful and quiet (even saw some wild deer two houses away), the train station was just a brisk walk away and everything else was within walking distance. Emin's service was warm and welcoming and he was so helpful with the house and some invaluable local knowledge. As a value for money, clean, spacious slice of home away from home, you can't go wrong. We'll be back in the sunny months - can't wait.

About Staten Island

Often an afterthought while visiting New York City, Staten Island has some delights of its own and is a good base for exploring the “Big Apple”. For all your accommodation needs in New York’s fifth borough, visit FlipKey where you will find a Staten Island vacation rental to suit all your requirements.

About Staten Island

Just separate from New Jersey and New York, Staten Island is the smallest of New York’s five boroughs in terms of population.

But what it lacks in population it makes up for in land mass: it's the 3rd largest borough.

The island was first mentioned by Italian explorer Giovanni de Verrazano in 1520 who sailed through The Narrows under Frances' flag. In 1609, Henry Hudson arrived while sailing for the Dutch who named it Staten Eylandt (literally "States Island") after their parliament the Staten-General.

Following the end of the second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667, Holland’s foothold in the New World was ceded to the English by the treaty of Breda with Staten Island now part of the English colony of New York.

You can find out all about the history on the island itself, and it's definitely worth visiting a museum or two!

What to do

While it’s possible to get to the suburb of Staten Island by driving over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the Staten Island Ferry has been making the 25-minute free journey into the city since 1906. That's the best way to see New York - it has the best views and passes the Statue of Liberty and Governor's Island.

While Staten Island has plenty to see and do in its many parks and historic towns of Richmond and Snug Harbor, the island is better used as a jumping off point for New York City.

Arriving at the Manhattan Ferry terminal, you’re only a few blocks from both Wall Street, where you can see the New York Stock Exchange in action, and Battery Park where boats depart for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

Top Staten Island travel tips

Make sure you have good walking shoes as Manhattan is best explored on foot. You will see so many sights that you recognize from the cinema and television, it will be hard to decide where to stop.

Get a feel for the city by taking the hop-on-hop-off bus to navigate around the city getting off at all the spots that interest you.

Shopping, of course, is amazing on 5th Avenue where you’ll find the Rockefeller Center for ice skating and Tiffany’s for that Audrey Hepburn photo opportunity. If you are hungry grab a hotdog from a street vendor! Delicious!

Visiting NYC doesn’t come cheap, but by staying on Staten Island your money not only goes further, but allows you to eat in a non-touristy restaurant like a native New Yorker. To find the perfect Staten Island vacation rental visit FlipKey, where you’ll find dozens to choose from.
