Description from owner

Description

Built in 1840 as the village chapel, Candlelight Cottage was converted in 2010 to provide 2 bedroom accommodation for up to 4 guests. Longer stays are welcome at a further discounted rate.

Located in one of the driest regions in the country, the cottage is a 2-bedroom self catering stone chapel set in a quiet Nene valley village. Ideally located for visiting the historic stone market towns of Stamford (10 mins), Oakham (20 mins) and Oundle (10 mins), Burghley House (10 mins), Rutland Water (15 mins), East of England showground (5 mins).

Accomodation consists of 6mx4.3 m (20'x14') double height open plan living/dining/oak kitchen area with widescreen TV/Freesat/DVD, downstairs twin bedroom with full-size single beds, bathroom with 5' wide electric shower, upstairs bedroom with king-size bed, fenced patio area with patio table set and BBQ. There is a country pub serving food just down the road along with the village playing field and playground.

The local area is popular for walking and cycling, fishing on the River Nene or at Rutland Water/Grafham Water/Eyebrook. Why not watch the Ospreys raise their young at Rutland Water or keep an eye open for Red Kites and Buzzards soaring over the garden? The pretty north Norfolk coast, London, Cambridge or Lincoln can all be reached in around an hour. There are many walks from the village along the river or through nearby woods and rolling hills. The local area is blessed with several historic stately homes, pretty stone villages and market towns along with a wide choice of places to eat and raise the odd glass or two! You can keep the children entertained at the nearby farm visitor centre or steam railway (both within 10 mins) or why not try canoing/wind-surfing/sailing/rock-wall/hiring a bike or having a boat trip on the Rutland Belle at Rutland Water?

7.4KW EV electric charging point available at extra cost.

Please note that the cottage is accessed by a 30m level gravel path.

“Great being pet friendly”

Reviewed 22 Sep 2017

Nice quiet cottage that has everything you need, vital for us that it was pet friendly. Also worth a mention that is in a very nice village with really great friendly people. What more can I say, yes we would go again.

“Disappointing”

Reviewed 12 Sep 2016

The Cottage was well situated for the places we wanted to visit and OK for a disabled person with reduced mobility. However the outside pictures are very out of date. The fence is now a high dark hedg… More

Response from the owner I'm very sorry that you were disappointed with your stay and that you did not feel able to raise any of your concerns with us even though we live next door and stressed we were available to help. If I may take your points in order: Since the photos were taken the trellis fencing is now covered in fragrant honeysuckle, jasmine and climbing roses. Most guests appreciate the extra privacy and scents this provides. When the flowering season has finished they will be cut back. The wooden table and chairs set is now looking a little tired at the end of a hard season and has been replaced. However the previous set was perfectly serviceable and has been enjoyed by guests throughout the summer. As I explained when you arrived, when preparing the cottage for you we found that the under-sink water heater that supplies one basin tap in the bathroom had sprung a leak and needed to be isolated. We immediately ordered a replacement but unfortunately it did not arrive in time to be fitted during your short stay. When we discussed this you stressed that it would not be an inconvenience for you, especially as the shower and other taps in the bathroom were unaffected. I feel it unfair for you to now say that it was a major issue and that you should have had a refund. The beds are covered with mattress protectors and 200 thread bed linen, I'm not sure what more we could provide. The mattresses themselves are good quality and we often receive comments about how comfortable they are. The feedback you have left is totally out of line with the feedback and scores we receive on this and other review sites. On behalf of other owners whose properties you may stay at in the future I would ask that you please discuss any concerns you have with them during your stay and give them the opportunity to help you rather than unfairly criticise later.

Cottage was very comfortable and quiet, apart from people working on the house next door. Owners live in adjacent house and were very helpful. Garden furniture could do with a bit of sprucing up.
