On the Washington side of the Columbia River, Riverglen is one of the only waterfront homes within the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Riverglen has more than 200 feet of shoreline with coves and two rocky beaches (the larger of which is a perfect launch site for windsurfing and kiteboarding).
You approach this home down a quarter-mile long lane that winds through tall firs and cedars. At the end of the lane is a parking area which is separated from the home by railroad tracks. [Because there are no nearby crossings, passing trains do not sound their horns, and a thick grove of trees helps make the sound barely noticeable.]
A custom-built, steel footbridge will carry you over the tracks, and carts are kept at the parking area to help carry your things. Note: The bridge is wide, very safe and easy to negotiate, but the slope may challenge those with limited strength or breath (see photos).
Riverglen's wraparound porch is just steps from the beaches, and from either entrance, beautiful hardwood floors lead you through the house and compliment the massive beams, creating a warm, inviting feel. The Greatroom's wraparound windows let you enjoy a 180-degree River view, and the stone, wood-burning fireplace will welcome you back from your day's adventures. An eating bar separates the complete cook's kitchen from the dining area which seats six.
The main floor Master Suite offers a comfortable queen bed and has a walk-in closet. Its full bath is tiled in slate and has an inviting tub with shower, double sinks and a picture window. Washer and dryer are just across the hall, along with outdoor cushions and beach towels.
Upstairs a large, welcoming sitting room holds a nice selection of games and some cozy spots to curl up and read or catch a nap. A 32"-inch HDTV with internet-streaming Blu-ray will bring Netflix/Hulu/YouTube/Pandora, and all your favorite games, but the trees prevent us from having satellite TV. There's also a DVD (and VCR!) player with a fine collection of DVDs and some vintage VCR movies to browse through.
A cozy bedroom down the hall has a full bed and French doors that open onto a private, River-view deck. The third bedroom features a stunning view from its large picture window. Here you'll find two twin daybeds and a large executive desk, complete with wireless keyboard and a vintage leather chair. Write the next great American novel, or just gaze at the Gorge cliffs and sparkling River below!
These bedrooms share an elegant, slate-tiled bath with walk-in shower and deep, step-up soaking tub. The picture window here offers a lovely western view of the Gorge with sunsets that turn the River crimson.
But you won't want to just LOOK at the view -- get out in it!! Just out the back door to the left, a private beach is just steps away (it's rocky, so water shoes or sneakers are a must). To the right is a path that leads to a little cove with a small beach, and in between are gorge-eous, rocky outcroppings. The bigger beach has straight, unobstructed access to the river -- great for launching your kiteboard or whatever else you fly on [but please no motorized sports] You'll be a few miles west of the crowds that choose Hood River vacation rentals, and enjoy the same famous, spectacular Gorge winds.
Of course, the view to the cliffs across the river might distract you, so go ahead and let the magic of this place take over! Roam the wooded, 6-acre grounds, but watch out for poison oak (info in the house notes). Also, please be sure and keep your dog leashed whenever outside; the creek on the east side of the property is an active salmon spawning ground.
If you venture off the property, the town of Stevenson is less than 2 miles west, and the road to Carson (and on to the woodlands and waterfalls of the vast Gifford Pinchot National Forest) is at the flashing light. Head east to the Hood River bridge for all the sights on the Oregon side of the River, or go on out to Eastern Washington's celebrated wine country! The Columbia Gorge Appellation is one of 15 different regions, all producing award-winning wines, and supporting an active and growing group of outstanding wineries.
Before you get there, stop off at Maryhill! This turn-of-the-twentieth-century mansion holds several interesting collections in its museum, and is also the site of Maryhill Winery. Its location on top of a high bluff gives it jaw-dropping views in all directions - take lots of pictures!
Whatever you do, you'll want to be back in time for the glorious sunset -- toast your day and plan tomorrow's adventures. There's so much to do in the area, it won't be an easy choice - but you can't go wrong at Riverglen; it's a little slice of heaven!
