Stowe Village was settled in the early 1800s. This village location provides an opportunity to discover this world of beauty and charm. From the specialty shops, restaurants, art center, library, playhouse and craft shops, you will stroll through 200 years of history. The Helen Day Art Center and Library is steps from our front door and offers exceptional exhibits and a quiet reading library. Use the village lighted tennis courts or in winter take a spin on the village ice rink. Enjoy entertaining live theater on Main St.
Ski Capitol of the East….Stowe and its ski area of Mt. Mansfield is known worldwide as North America’s Ski Capitol of the East. The ski resort is truly fantastic with some of the best skiing and snow making capabilities of Eastern resorts. Although known for alpine skiing, Stowe also has four cross country ski resorts with exception terrain. Skiing is just one of the many activities for our visitors. Each season brings its own adventures, beauty and exciting outdoor and cultural events. Many of those events are within walking distance to the Inn.
Art Galleries and Museums… Art collectors and artists will enjoy the three village galleries and the local art supply store. For many years, Frank Mason would bring students from the New York City Art League for a month of plein air painting in Stowe. Many of those students stayed at the Inn. We have an art studio for our visiting artists so bring your painting supplies and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The Helen Day Art Center and library (directly across from the Inn) houses a wonderful and ever changing collection of art, as well as quiet places to read. You can also check out a video and spend the evening at the Inn watching a new or classic movie. Helen Day Art Center; Galleria Fine Arte
Hike the Green Mountains….For our more adventurous guests you may want to hike the green mountains of Vermont. It is a wonderful way to explore the hills and valleys and get a birds eye view of the town. Try the Pinnacle trail for a short hike,or the Mt. Mansfield trails through Smuggles Notch for a more challenging hike. Vermont’s Long Trail, an extension of the Appalachian Trail runs right through Stowe. The Green Mountain Club in nearby Waterbury Center offers a schedule of hikes throughout the summer months. If hiking is not your adventure, then you can chose from among bicycling, horseback riding, river kayak tours or wagon rides.
Area Driving Tours… Touring our back roads is a pleasure in itself. The covered bridges, rivers, farms and scenic pastures take you back to an earlier and quieter time. A time and lifestyle that still exists in this charming town. While you are traveling Vermont’s back roads, stop at the local winery for a great tour and tasting of Vermont made wines; tour the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream factory which is located a few miles from the Inn; watch glass blowing demonstrations or drive 45 minutes to Burlington to one of the most visited tourist attractions in Vermont – the Shelburne Museum. It is a day adventure so plan your time around a full day trip. You will also want to visit Lake Champlain, This inland lake offers Ferry rides to New York and historical boat tours. We highly recommend it.
Golf in the Green Mountains… Summer months always brings us great golfing and swimming. For our golfing enthusiasts, you will want to play the Stowe Country Club, an 18 hole course with beautiful scenery. For those who want less of a challenge, there are two 9 hole courses within 10 miles of the Inn.
Take a cool swim… For our swimming enthusiasts we would recommend Vermont’s natural lakes and rivers. The Stowe recreation path runs next to the Little River and offers a few areas for swimming. Drive ten miles to Waterbury and enjoy the Waterbury reservoir for the day. You can also visit the indoor pool at the Swiming Hole – Stowe’s swimming and fitness center that is state of the art.
