Additional Location Information

Taormina is a charming hillside town on the east coast of Sicily and is one of the island’s main tourist resorts.
Spectacularly located on a terrace of Monte Tauro with views westwards to Mt Etna, Taormina is a beautiful small town. Over the centuries, this sophisticated place has seduced an exhaustive line of writers, artists and aristocrats like D. H. Lawrence, Goethe, Wilhelm Von Gloeden, Paul Klee and many others.

The capital of Byzantine Sicily in the 9th century, Taor-mina is an almost perfectly preserved medieval town, and if you can tear yourself away from the shopping and sunbathing, it has a wealth of small but perfect tourist sites.

Europe’s largest active volcano, Mt Etna, is just 40 minutes drive southwest from Taormina and it can be reached by cable car. This exciting volcan has become yet more exhilarating with the creation of new adventures, from hiking and mountain-biking to quad-biking and skiing.

The easiest way to reach the beaches for those who stay in Taormina is the Cable car called: Funivia.
The funivia consists of two sets of four cable cars traveling in both directions. Up to 680 people can be transported every hour. Each cable car holds 12 people and the system operates every day of the year. Cars leave every 15 minutes. The cable car is a welcome option to reach the beaches rather than driving and trying to find a parking spot.
The most enchanting beaches are:
The bay of Mazzaró and the bay of Isola Bella.

The beautiful nature reserve of Isola Bella is just south of Taormina. A small finger of land connects the island to the beach below Taormina. Also known as The Pearl of the Ionian Sea, it was a private property until 1990, when it was bought by the Region of Sicily, being turned into a nature reserve, administrated by the Italian branch of the World Wide Fund of nature. The island has a small and rather rocky beach which is a popular destination for sunbathers. Isola Bella is also an ideal place for “non-divers” to enjoy themselves with other activity like for example:
Snorkeling inside the natural reserve.
Boat excursions to the Blue Cave, the Bay of Sirens, and Cape Taormina.
Sunbathing and relaxation at the public beach or beach clubs.
Eating the local cuisine at the neighboring restaurants and bars.
Free guided walking tours of Isola Bella.

Taormina offers an uncontaminated nature, century-old traditions, natural reserves, archeological sites…

I really recommend you to dive into this enchanted dimension and to delight every single moment with all your heart.
I will try to introduce you to the life of Taormina, giving you all the travel tips that you will need so that you can experience all that Taormina has to offer you.

Enjoy your stay in Taormina.
