The Algarve's big resorts may be bursting with northern Europeans seeking a sun-kissed home from home but this elegant town, all wrought-iron balconies and tiled facades, retains a very Portuguese feel of tranquillity and style - and with mile after mile of golden beach nearby there's room to spread out. Beautiful empty beaches with sands that seem to go on forever. Fields of orange trees, heavy with the scent of blossom. Then the hills of fig and almond trees and houses with dazzling whitewashed walls and distinctive chimneys decorated to resemble fine tracery of lace. And, last of all, the great open spaces. This is just a hint of the charms of Tavira and its municipality, an invitation to come and find out more.
The ground floor of apartment is ideally positioned a short 8 minutes walk from the town centre, and with 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom it comfortably sleeps up to 5 people. It has air-conditioning in both bedrooms and the lounge, and has been furnished to the highest of standards.
Things to do and see:
*Moinhos Da Rocha Waterfall-This is definitely worth a visit, its 15 minutes away from the apartment and about 5 minutes walk down to the falls. Pack some sandwiches and just relax by the beach of the pool, then go for a swim and cool down under the waterfall. If you are of the adventurous type you can even jump off the rocks!
*Camera Obscura- This has been set up in the Water Tower (which is the tallest building in Tavira) and allows you to view a 360 degree panorama of Tavira projected through a series of lenses and mirrors onto a viewing area. You can take an elevator to the top of the tower , or use the staircase, to reach the viewing room where an English guide will describe the images that can be seen on a visual tour around Tavira. Well worth a trip and good value for money at 5 euros per person (Summer 2011). In addition, it provides an ideal "cool" room on a hot summers day.
*Algarve Shopping Centre- Praia Da OuraThe Guia Shopping and Entertainment Complex can be found on the N125 just after Guia and is a modern shopping centre with an excellent range of well known shops, a multiplex cinema and a large range of cafes and restaurants on the top floor.
*Benamor Golf Club -This course was the first golf course to open east of the capital of the Algarve, Faro, and lies just outside of Tavira. It is a beautiful, tranquil 18 hole golf course, and I don't know how we found it, but we like it for a different reason: they do the most fantastic baguettes and burgers at lunchtime! Non-members are welcome.
*Praia Do Barril beach- Most of the beaches are great around the Isle de Tavira, but this section is easily reached from the tourist villages of Santa Luzia and Pedras del Rey. From the latter village a small train takes the visitor across the intervening water to the sandy island bar in a slow journey which reminds everyone that they are definitely on holiday!TripAdvisor property ID 3443808...Read more
