"La Boussole" translates to The Compass, named to evoke a place to become clear, and to re-orient oneself. Expanded around a central enclosed courtyard, this large home provides a true base for a completely refreshing getaway. You'll find ample spaces, with many options for privacy or separation when needed. There are also several areas for regrouping when it's time to come together. Outdoor living is easy in the courtyard which is nicely sheltered from our mistral wind. The courtyard includes a grassy area, large deck, large hot tub, BBQ, and plenty of seating and is flanked by the studio and the house. (Note, there is no ocean view from the courtyard or hot tub.)
The house is split-level, and offers a master bedroom and bathroom at one end, and two bedrooms and two baths at the other end. In between, is the large ocean-view dining room right off the kitchen, then up a few steps to the roomy living room with its walls of windows for more ocean views, and large fireplace.
The studio is a huge, bright open space for watching TV, relaxing, reading, gazing at the beauty outside, as well as additional sleeping space. Ascend the spiral stair to the ocean-view desk for those who may desire a small work or study area. There is a half-bath in the studio.
While inwardly protecting the wonderful courtyard, La Boussole also opens brightly to her wild and beautiful surroundings. Not far from the shore, one can gaze out at crashing waves and broad ocean views, and enjoy the rugged coastal and hillside expanses. Hiking is a cinch! The trail is just a few feet from the front door, and presents a choice of bluff, hillside or meadow rambles. And a short distance on foot will bring you to the Ohlson Ranch Center pool and tennis, just beyond the Stengle Beach access.

My husband, daughter and her twin grandsons spent four nights at this wonderful home. The ocean views were fantastic, and we were fortunate to have clear sunny days our entire stay. Our grandsons especially loved the tiny alcove study on the second floor of the studio. They actually slept there for two nights. The bluff trail was just across the street from the house, allowing us all to walk throughout the Sea Ranch complex. All in all, it was a memorable experience and we hope to return someday

La Boussole is a beautiful home but poorly maintained. Light bulbs were out, tiles coming up in the bathroom, etc. Main disappointment started with Coasting Home's reservation process. Website a little misleading in their "fees." Just read carefully before booking! They advertise "prices always include..." but, really everything else is on top of the rental's daily/weekly rates. Plus they have this "deduct $20 if paying by cash." Well this means the reservation fee is not really $30, but $50, because they actually tack on the 20 bucks on top of everything else!
So, the house-again, they advertise all paper towels, soaps, and so on included. well, couldn't they have checked that there will be enough dish soap and paper towels stocked for our 3-day stay?? The bottle of soap bottle barely had anything at the bottom! we had to stress out over not having enough soap to wash dishes!! Also, the house was supposed to have a wood-burning fireplace. but when we arrived, the beautiful stone structure had a sign saying do not use due to safety hazards. When I spoke with Coasting homes to tell them this was a huge disappointment since the house was advertised as having this particular amenity, they did not offer any consolation other than "oh, sorry about that..yeah it's really dangerous." Couldn't they have given a small discount? I think so! The fireplace was something we were looking for in a vacation house and not being to use it put a damper on the ambience we wanted. Another thing we had to worry about were coffee filters--such a basic and cheap item to keep at hand for guests--but nooo, we had to figure that out on our own! Oh, and make sure you pack your own BBQ utensils because even though the courtyard advertised with the house is a great spot for outdoor cooking, BBQ utensils are not a part of what they provide.
The rates they charge for this house is not worth it. And we have had way better experiences with other rental companies in the area.
We couldn't agree more! Rate structures have been clarified as we have continued adjusting to our new web booking system. It did take some getting used to as we launched in early summer. Regarding the fireplace, that was a real disappointment. Repairs are scheduled and the scope of the repairs required a complete decommissioning for the interim. There is a woodstove in the large studio room for easy use for fires. We strive to be cheerful and quick if we are ever contacted during a stay to replenish supplies if needed, etc. We also agree that La Boussole is an outstanding house! Our mission is to provide excellent service and a great guest experience. We regret if we missed that mark this time.

“La Boussole april 2012”

La Boussole is a well-maintained and comfortable vacation rental. The location is excellent, with good views of the ocean and easy access to the bluffs. Stengel Beach is a short walk to the south. The wind-protected courtyard is a nice feature for the windy months (like april). Renters should understand that a large portion of the square footage is a detached building. It is nice: a large living room with big screen t.v., half bath and a cool loft area. This would be ideal for teenagers to hang out but would tend to be under utilized when the group is all adults since the main living area and kitchen are in the house. The check in/check out process could not have been easier. This, along with nice kitchen amenities and a high level of cleanliness sets this rental apart from the 5 or 6 others I have stayed at in Sea Ranch.

We enjoyed our stay at the La Boussole very much. The weather was just gorgeous and we had beautiful hikes and the kids and the dog had fun at the beaches. The house is very convenient and comfortable.
La Boussole is a great house, and we are so glad it worked well for your party. While the spa service vendor did resolve the issue, we regret the hot tub trouble. We hope to have you with us again.
“An Exceptional Stay in Sea Ranch - Christmas 2011”

We loved the house and the management team! The house is perfect to share with family and friends. We had a memorable Christmas/birthday celebration there. Beautiful view! Good location! It's roomy, comfortable (very comfy beds), well equipped with linens, blankets, comforters and towels. The kitchen cooking equipment is pretty basic. If you're a gourmet cook you'll want some additional pans. There was no broiler pan and only one cookie sheet for instance. On arrival we noticed only 4 wine glasses so we immediately purchased more, which I'm sure the management team would have provided if asked to because they immediately responded to replacing the broken coffee grinder and checked up a couple of times during our week stay.
And...sside from a few spiders that left their webs in lampshades and some of the showers, it was clean.

The house was spacious and accommodated our family and pets well. There is an enclosed courtyard area which allowed the dogs to be off leash. The biggest problem was an ant infestation in the kitchen. I reported it to the management after our trip and was assured that the problem was being addressed. The management was flexible in arrival and departure times which allowed us a leisurely brunch on our departure day.
