Description from owner

Description

The two castle cottages (newly refurbished) are adjacent to the 15th century Butlerstown castle, and surrounded by their own private Lavender Garden, and a Herb Garden. Butlerstown has been in the ownership of the same family for many generations, and it has been the wish of the current generation that its beauty and tranquility should be made more available to the public. Set in over 100 acres of peaceful farm and woodland, we are just 10 minutes drive from the closest good beach. There is a small soccer pitch for children to play on, and animals to feed. A good variety of local restaurants, pubs (such as the Lobster Pot pub/restaurant), riding stables, golf courses, museums, deep sea fishing from Kilmore Quay, bird heritage sites (such as the Saltee Islands, North Slob, Our Lady's Island and Tacumshin Lake) are all within easy striking distance. Donkeys, sheep, free range hens and other pet animals, as well as an ancient well and traditionally run vegetable garden, orchard, woods and 'enchanted beech walk' all help to make Butlerstown a unique place.

Interaction with guest

There is internet connection on the place, but not in the cottages themselves. Parents have often told me it is the first real holiday they have had with their kids as they are not glued to a screen! We live close by and so can be available for queries or help needed. There is a booklet which will give you a lot of details of local activities, restaurants, and beaches etc.

“Amazing space for extended families”

Reviewed 1 Feb 2018

We have just returned from a wonderful weekend at Butlerstown Castle. The renovation of the old cow sheds is amazing resulting in 2 stunningly decorated cottages. Both are really comfortable with excellent heating and hot water, the beds were very comfortable and the kitchens are very well equipped. The kids really enjoyed feeding the animals and one of the highlights of the weekend was Jim's tour of the old Butlerstown Castle itself which was quite magical. I would have no hesitation in recommending these properties particularly for extended families. We were 13 in total with 6 adults, 4 teenagers and 3 children.

The cottages are full of character and are a lovely setting. We had a really relaxing time and lots of space for the family. We didn't venture too far from the cottages and the kids loved the garden, the castle and the animals.

“A gorgeous place and welcome from the owners”

Reviewed 12 Jun 2012

The cottages are gorgeous, beautifully decorated with a real attention to detail. The kitchens were fully kitted out with all utensils you could use and the owners had some essentials provided on our arrival. We had 6 children with us and you could hardly get them inside for the whole weekend from tennis on the lawn to football, and they feeding the chickens and donkeys. We also really enjoyed the tour of the castle that "King Jim" provided. Thanks to Anna and Jim for their hospitality, we felt so welcome and comfortable without feeling intruded upon. And the adults had a great few nights in front of the log fires. A brilliant place for a family break.
