A designer’s delight, WHALESoNG HOUSE & GARDENS are lavishly landscaped with an enclosed, verdant, rear garden of over 50 specimen rhododendrons, climbing roses, hydrangeas, princess flowers, camellias and other perennials. A profusion of colors burst from hanging baskets of annuals around the exterior of the house throughout the season.
Designed by one of the owners, the serene, sculptured, three-foot spherical fountain, Global Peace, which punctuates the dozens of heathers, lavenders and ornamental grasses in the front garden has become a Trinidad landmark. Byrd Baker, the “old timer” from Mendocino, who, in his small skiff, once blocked a Japanese whaling ship, carved the driftwood whale insignia, which hangs at the apex of the face of the house.
Six adults can be accommodated comfortably in the three bedrooms, one on the upper level with a queen bed and a spare day-bed, one on the lower level with a double bed and another on the lower level with two single beds. All are dressed with luxurious down comforters and many comfortable pillows. There is a cozy bathtub in the bright, upper bathroom and a shower in the polished burl-countered lower bathroom. Complimentary bathrobes and linens are provided for each guest during your stay. The attached garage has been converted to a spacious storage and laundry room with a large-capacity clothes washer and dryer, as well as a full-size ironing board and steam iron for your convenience.
The furnishings were chosen by the owners for their elegance as well as comfort. Some are precious, sturdy, family heirlooms. There is a comfortable sofa and two upholstered Bergere chairs in the living room and a teak dining table in the adjacent dining area. A teak writing desk is nestled in the corner of the non-fiction book alcove next to the kitchen. The upper media loft has upholstered wingback chairs and a comfortable sofa. There are parquet floors, wall-to-wall carpeting and Oriental rugs throughout. Original art and photographs are tastefully displayed in the rooms and hallways. Massive, antique architectural pieces punctuate the apices of the interior and exterior walls.
The kitchen has a redundant supply of appliances and utensils including an automatic fresh-grinding coffeemaker which can be set to wake you with a rich aroma, a spacious, Panasonic microwave oven, a full-size 1954 GE refrigerator in perfect condition, a new Amana stove and oven, a new Maytag portable dishwasher, various Cuisinart and other brand mixers, blenders and crock pots, as well as grills and hot sandwich makers. Attractive cookware, service-ware and accessories are provided in quantity for your home-away-from-home comfort.

This was are second year to rent this house. Great location for the Clam Beach run. Can walk to everything we need to get to. The only problem with this rental is the size of the shower, if your short and not to wide it works great, but if your a bigger person it is a challenge to shower.
Thank you for the heads up on the some of the pots and pans that need to be replaced. Will get that done ASAP

Our daughter and her two young sons from Coronado, California, visited October 1 through 4, 2010. Due to space limitations at our home I rented WHALESoNG HOUSE for them. It was a wonderful place for them to stay and they thoroughly enjoyed the spacious house, hot tub, gardens and convenient location. They look forward to their next visit and stay at WHALESoNG.

There were some minor problems. The light over the doorway on the inside did not work. The large overhanging ball light in the living room did not work and it was not obvious where the switch was for this light. When I called the management to come fix these lights they said they would come but did not. However, in fairness to them, we did not call until a few days before leaving. It would be helpful if there were instructions as to where obscure switches are for the lighting. The other concern is that the shower and bathtub are very small and it is difficult to get in and out of both of them.

When we arrived, it was late at night. All the beds in the bedrooms didn't have a top linen beneath the comforter. The bottom sheets and comforter cover had creases in every beds. It was hard to tell whether they failed to starch the linens or worse, not washed.
One bed in particular seemed to have bottom sheet with wrinkles that made it very hard to believe it was from laundry "dryer" creases.
Needless to say we were a bit surprised because in every vacation rentals, individual house or condos, we never encountered this kind of situations. (They were the beds we can't help crawling into!)
Let's say we had choices; eiter to call the management to send someone bring new sheets/linens or start doing the laundry ourselves(that very night for the whole 4 beds). Neither choices would allow us to sleep within 2 hours, I would say.
We were too exhausted and wanted to sleep right away, so went ahead & slept ....with a bit of hesitation.
The all other furnishings had somewhat "homey" arrangements, such as cloths over chairs, throws on the couch, and particular patterns of comforter covers, etc., so we decided to think the "unprofessional" bed linen conditions as a part of this property deal(?!)(though we did launder sheets and ironed it ourselves afterall).
Then the last day of our stay, my body broke out rash that itched so much that kept me from sleeping. The doctor treated me with a cream, thinking it maybe "a possible case of scabies".
Well, who knows, but the timing was so bad that I can't help thinking where I got this itching...... it didn't help to think better about the bedding condition to say the least.
The town was beautiful and the location was very nice, but I didn't want to go to bed thinking someone else may have been using the bed with the same sheet that I am about to go in.
Well, this is a tough review to respond to. It was really shocking to us. We did add linens beneath the comforter since and the house has had major renovation since this stay. We clean our linens well after every stay and have never ever had this type of issue or complaint at a house before or since. We have also brought in a new cleaner manager since then who is very on top of all of the properties. Also, my job as a manager is to visit all of the properties regularly to check for anything that is not up to par. The rash was most likely from the laundry detergent they used as well.
People stay at this home regularly and really love it and as you can see by looking at other reviews on this property this is definitely not indicative of the lovely Whalesong Home.

The house was nice and well stocked with the basics. The location is great, very close to the beach. The main problem we had was with the hot water. It had been worked on before we arrived, and failed twice while we were there. Eventually a new hot water heater was installed. The repair man was prompt in responding to our calls, but the lack of hot water on multiple days was a problem.
Also, it would have been nice to know about how to use the dishwasher (you need to hook it up to the sink) before spending a while trying to figure it out. The house could also use a closer cleaning in terms of dusting and vacuuming.
